Digital Foundry: Bloodborne PC Emulation - 60FPS/Mods Tested - The Remaster We've Always Wanted?

From Software is also retarded for enabling it then?

I'm not particularly a fan of CA either but clearly From made the choice to enable it based on their artistic choice/opinion of liking it. When Bluepoint disable it I'm sure there will be outcries of "OMG it's ruined the artistic vision" too.

They are. Also for no "turn off" option.

In their games after BB CA is reduced or almost non existent.

I love that film/camera industry is combating CA for decades now but artsy hipster game devs are forcing this shit on us because "they know better"

This one gets it.

Imagine buying a 5090 to play decades old PlayStation games

Michael Jordan Lol GIF by ESPN
Imagine people happy to play microsoft games on PS5 that were released years ago on PC ?

Forza horizon 5 , Gears , Ori Halo.. etc etc

" Sea of Thieves has Reportedly Sold over 1 million on PS5 "

Many are waiting for Starfield and Half life Alyx on PS5.

All this day one on PC some have to wait..

Imo these effects helps games look less edgy and gamey. You know, that raw look.
Yeah the whole point is to make games look like they've been filmed, just like most are used to seeing things on regular not-computer-generated TV. Some like it, some hate it. It is what it is.

This has always been fucking stupid. Keep that film grain, lens flare, and lens distortion trash in films.

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us, only sky
Imagine all the people
Livin' for today
Ah
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too
Imagine all the people
Livin' life in peace
You
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world
You
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Just for the sake of curiosity I installed emulator to see how Bloodborne works & I got very pleasantly surprised.
On my 6800XTX & Ryzen 7 3700X runs like a charm (with few mods installed).
Only thing that bothers me is some tearing in 60fps mod active.

Find a way to overcome that. I don't get any tearing with 60fps delta time. Hopefully you can achieve the same result.

I should really look into this now that I have a PC that can handle it.

Yep, and it's actually the reason why I still haven't played Elden Ring, I can't stand chromatic aberration.
On PC there's a mod for that and once I found it I was happy to trade all online function for that one basic thing that should be included in any self-respecting game's options

(And FOV and vignette mods but let's focus)

Sometimes I leave CA enabled even when it can be turned off...

A lot of the time they're too heavy handed with the implementation, but if it is subtle I find it can add a desirable cinematic flair to the image, depending on the game. Then again I've always appreciated a robust post processing pipeline in everything I play.

That's sad.
Avoiding games for this reason?
It's subtle and it's there to ground the image. I think it looks great
It looks terrible to me and absolutely destroy the image. I already have to deal with that in real life because of glasses (I'm nearsighted), having another layer of chromatic aberration added to my games is something I can't tolerate.
It gives headaches, it looks terrible, it's uncomfortable to look at, and it's there for stupid reasons, just trying to mimic films.

Also something I never understood is that people who defend chromatic aberration often say things like "it's barely noticeable", "you won't even see it", but then "it adds to the visuals " "it adds atmosphere", if it's not noticeable, how does it improve the image? lol

I agree it's a shame I had to avoid the game "just" because of this, it's frustrating to me to skip a game just because of a dumb filter like this, but they really could have added an option to turn it off (vignette too), like most games do. When they announced the DLC, I got kind of excited because the trailer for the DLC didn't have chromatic aberration, so I was hoping that maybe they would finally add an option to remove it, but nope, it's still there in the actual game.

Yes I know about the mods, and if I do decide to play it anyway one day, I'll have to use them, and I agree with vignette too, it also looks terrible. The issue like you mentioned though is having to give up on all the online features, they are nice and always contributed to the overall atmosphere in souls games, it's sad to have to give up on them.

CA really does ground the image. At least when there is no dlss or other aa available there

I'm not here to defend the often clumsy use of various post processing techniques that are commonplace these days, but I think it's important to have a bit of perspective here and maybe try to refrain from exaggeration and hyperbole. Modern video gaming image quality is incredible. When you're talking about players who were doing this back in the 8-bit days, on shitty old 4:3 tube TV screens at about 240p, there's really no comparison to be had in terms of "noticing" the improvements to the image seen in games of today.

Elden Ring holds up extremely well, unless the player staring at it is about as old as TAA.

That's the thing though, you talk about how bad we had it in the past, with bad signal source leading to poor image quality etc... that's true, and we don't have this today, which is why I find it really stupid to ADD image quality issues, to a media that doesn't have any to begin with.

Video game / 3D isn't a compressed media, that's the very particular thing about it compared to movies or photography. Everything is rendered in real time, so depending on the settings, you can have a perfect image quality, because the raw source material is actually there, untouched. Why ruin this whole concept with post process effects that are usually found in compressed medias that went through real life lenses, causing these image problems, when these things, by nature, don't exist at all in 3D. It's... just stupid.

It's like going to a live orchestra, but instead of listening to it live with your own ears, you listen to it through a compressed feed, with filters, on headphones.

I know you are, we talked about it in the past, and I remember you actually don't wear your glasses when playing and that's why you use a gigantic screen lol But because of that, you might not perceive all details.
Glasses also do increase, multiply, the chromatic aberration, so that's something to consider.
For example, if there is chromatic aberration in a game, and I wear glasses, I can actually increase it or kind of lower / counter it, depending on if I move my head to the left or to the right, because it affects the light direction.
I hate it in general, but glasses make it even worse.

That's too clinical. What about artistic vision?

I remember as a kid being so used to blurry console and Amiga gaming graphics, that when we went to the local computer club on a Tuesday night (basically a communal sharing and piracy ritual in the early 90s), my friend and I saw some games running on the higher res IBM displays there and we chatted about how we didn't like the graphics on PC because they were "too sharp" 😅

Chromatic aberration works for me in cases like that Unrecord demo where it's trying to simulate bodycam footage that would also have it. But most games don't trick my brain into thinking it's real footage like that and so CA otherwise just seems distracting now that Digital Foundry and the internet have trained me on how to spot it.

I turned it off when I played through Bloodborne on PC a couple months ago.

Kinda makes sense in your case, what with the dirt in your eye and all.

Yep. This is a great example of post-processing being used to replicate a certain look and feel which actually improves immersion. No amount of bullshit is going to make me thinking I'm watching real footage while playing Bloodborne.

It's not the games themselves though, it's just the display tech and hardware. Software wise modern games are a lot worse than decade old games on the same hardware/display.

Just play something like the Quake remaster, or an older game like Dead Space 2 on a modern PC. These games look so sharp and clean, any modern game looks like a blurred mess in comparison. Especially most UE4/5 games.

Modern games use too many post effects that mess with visibility. Image reconstruction and AI upscaling that causes ghosting, heavy motion blur everywhere, vignette (reduces visibility), chromatic aberration, auto exposure that simulates crappy cameras, etc. Older games have none of this crap and look much better IQ wise and are easier on the eyes.

I really don't get why From didn't patch options in. They added menu QoL and even bad RT, so why not simple toggles for notoriously divisive visual effects?

I say I'm happy to be offline, and I am, but I definitely would have relived my DS1 days and helped people with bosses if I didn't have to choose. They must know people hate those effects by now.

4k has issues , but I'm trying out 1800p 60FPS . Oh boy it looks amazing on my C1 , can't believe me eyes . But it's crashing randomly so let see which patches I should remove .

just stay on native res. at least i had to. [3080 12gb] i thought 1440p would be fine but it kept crashing. i clicked off all the resolution patches and just kept the 60fps. it stopped crashing. did gascoigne and cleric beast today.

60fps is the truth.

Gotcha , as long as 60 is not the cause then . Man , higher res looks incredible

I played ultrawide 3440x1440 and didn't have crashes.
