On the plus side, the folks who are playing it seem mostly positive.
I'm seeing a lot of mixed reviews. With that said though the negative reviews I see are common complaints with extraction shooters in general so it just seems some people who never played or liked extraction shooters dont like this.

Arc raiders is probably coming this summer. They are preparing for launch with the next test
I played the last test, if you guys think Marathon looks boring then you are not going to like Arc Raiders for sure.

There's a closed play test going on right now that opens up in the next week or so I think. Be interesting to see where they are at now because 6 months ago it needed a ton of work.

That's a big problem with the game.

They are trying for mass appeal and sales (like Destiny) with a big budget, but are locked into a niche shooter mode. Most people have never played an extraction shooter, and most people wont care for it. They'll go back to run and gun modes like TDM, simple objective modes you can respawn as many times as you want, and playing as a lone wolf. Marathon not only is an extraction shooter, but also a 3-person team focus. So anyone who wants to go solo just wanting to have fun not giving a shit will surely have trouble doing well against teams. In other shooter modes you can lone wolf it and still do well even it's Domination mode etc... because the players are set into teams and there's a clear goal what the simple objectives are (attack or defend this hot spot and which ever team gets 100 pts wins).

I agree. It's an uphill battle for Bungie. The only saving grace they have is their name and that there really isn't any focused extraction shooters other than Hunt which is very different from this. Well the last time I played Hunt it was anyways. It's gone through a lot of updates since then.

I agree. Those are probably the biggest factors that can make it a success. Also being F2P would help too.

I just dont see extraction shooters being big sellers as a whole especially on console. Tarkov on PC is the biggest one, but I get a feeling this kind of shooter gameplay loop is more of a PC gamer thing and not a console vibe. And Bungie needs this game selling well on all platforms.

It's kind of like on console where's the shit loads of world war strategy games like on PC. Probably because most console gamers dont care for a port of a Civil War or hex based Vietnam game.

But who knows. Maybe Marathon will be a giant success like Destiny on all platforms.

If the Alpha is anything to go by, this game is nowhere near ready.

What could they fix if they delayed it? The impressions I've heard so far haven't said anything about it being broken.

It plays well but is boring. I'm not sure that can be fixed by a delay. If they're really worried about it, make it free to play or at most $20.

The most popular mode in Fortnite is still team battle royale. IIRC most people play Fortnite on consoles.

People are too used to demo's masquerading as "Beta".

This is an alpha, and they outlined all the things that are not in this build. They're not looking for "is it polished?" feedback.

I've not played myself and will reserve judgement until I do, but that seems like an awful lot to get through in just a few months.
I 100% guarantee there's a newer build with a lot of those things in it being played at Bungie right now.

They need to work on adding more encounters or more PvP opportunities in the game, but it's not as troubled as a lot of people seem to be making it out to be.

Having said that, I hope that if the feedback they get tells them to push it, that they do actually push it back.

They will probably delay it, but they should cancel it, shut the majority of the studio down and get those who slandered Factions to work on completing that project under the close supervision of Naughty Dog.

Only a couple of things need to be fixed.

Faster loot system
Better controller settings
Agreed. There needs to be a quick scan function or something so you don't have to go right up to the packs. I wouldn't be surprised if it already exist and I just missed it. Also on the inventory control in the controller does need some tweaks. But this is an alpha so, I imagine some of this will be sorted.

I don't think they will delay it. I also don't think it would benefit from a delay, we have seen the vision of what they created, if they try and pivot I doubt it would go over well. Best to release and move on. Only black swan that may change that is GTA6.

How are you finding the game in general?
I'm having a lot of fun, but the large deadzone on controller makes it feel sluggish and unresponsive, so I really need settings to adjust deadzone to 0% - instead of the 15-20% it has now. They added deadzone settings for Destiny 2 last year, so there's hope.

I'm lvl 16 now and will continue playing until there's no more contracts.

It's funny that most people who've played it are having fun. The loud nay-sayers really don't know what the hell they're talking about.

Yeah I've been watching Shroud and Drlupo and the game looks good, if a little rough. But hey its an Alpha, still looking forward to it myself personally.

I said it before in one of the Marathon threads, those that like this type of game and have actually played it seem to be really enjoying it.

I think it'll be delayed to a specific date because i think the community will give very specific and direct advice on things they can change within a certain timeframe to make the game better.

It needs a few tweaks but the base is there
Here's my idea for tweaks.

- scrap the low res "stylistic choice". Put those graphical art kids to work. Bungie games are events and they should at least showcase the technology of the day. I see no reason why Marathon in its current state can't run on a base PS4.

- scrap the extraction shooter and make a Halo length campaign with the Halo loadout of MP modes. Save color coded loot for Destiny

- keep the overall art design if you must, just make environments higher res and use at least SOME technical flair.

Boom. No reason they can't slap this together before September. Promise it would have gotten a far better response.

For all the ppl in favour of delay- it means another months of spreading already thin budget for dev salaries, even if its measly 6 months more thats likely 50m usd sony will have to pay for it, will game be able to even make it back? :D

The game is coming in 5 months.

Its basically done and dusted.

They are not making sweeping changes because of this 'alpha'.

In fact this Alpha is basically a glorified demo

The things they're actually looking for feedback on can mostly be adjusted by tweaking numbers and updating animation/sounds. And others are things that games like this typically update after release once they get enough player feedback. The reason for this 'alpha' is to get that feedback early so they know what needs to be adjusted. That way we get those updates earlier and have them based on actual player feedback.

Honestly, the only tricky thing on this list are the last 2 items. There's not enough tension around PvP encounter and part of that is no one is attached to anything they're carrying right now. But there needs to be more done there. And the AI needs a serious bump in aggressiveness.

Updates on Runners and their kit is something that would happen after the games comes out anyways.

This is not the first alpha test they've done, and I truly think they'll be fine. Whether or not the game finds an audience is a different thing.

It's crazy how well known the story is of what happened with factions is yet you still have people who think Bungie was the problem.

But Helldivers 2 looked like a lot of fucking from the trailers. In fact the game is still a lot of fun. This just looks meh.
No doubt. That's why word of mouth is more important. There wasn't really a way to convey the game in about a two or three minute trailer the way it actually plays out the best way to find out is to actually play it or secondarily watch an entire round to see if it's something you like. It's gonna be something that's gonna be more of an acquired taste and it's not gonna have everyone latch onto it like a Fortnite or a Marvel Rivalsl type of game.

Even the first couple matches I played, I was kind of like OK it's not bad but then going back again and playing it a little bit later I think more of it comes together and you kind of get what it's about it. It's actually pretty good but it's not gonna be sold on just trailers. I completely 100% agree with you with that. I can tell you, though it did me enough to convince me though to buy it when it launches cause I will be playing it.

Helldivers 2 is pure cinema every time you play. There's always something awesome or new that happens in every dive that keeps you engaged in the gameplay loop.

This looks more like derivative slop with reductive art design.

They will continue. The vision for the game is there but it isn't resonating with folks.

I personally need hands on time to make a decision. I also need to see how this gameplay loop works, what would make me want to play consistently in a week like a new Tarkov wipe.

If they delay I would heavily focus on fleshing out an entire focus on a pve only mode campaign. Cut scenes, characters, story, big events with many players working together, etc.

That's what's missing for a priced product.

Otherwise the only change should be $10 at most for entry. $25 for a deluxe edition with a season pass or some crap.

You cannot go into this at $40, and most want free to play. Tarkov isn't free to play so I don't see why people expect that here…

It is, but it's a different type of game. HD2 is more or less a horde mode in a larger space. The PVEPVP mix in marathon makes it a completely different type of game. That's where it makes it a hard sale on the trailers. You're not gonna get a bunch of shit exploding in your face every 10 seconds because it's not that type of game.

Regarding the artwork, I think it looks good. It makes sense for what the game is, the interior spaces actually look very good and very clean. I have a feeling that the outside stuff probably hasn't taken full advantage of whatever type of lighting they're implementing yet so that might have to do with part of the reason why it looks like the way it does outside because I don't disagree there. They're definitely could be more work done in that area.

Sure they'll tweak some things and patch some things.

But this is the game you're getting at launch for all intents and purposes.

I fast forwarded to a random spot and the guy yelled "This game is made for babies!" with dramatic music playing in the background.
