I was ready for a $2000 console 16 months ago. Was just looking at pre-built PC stuff. If its PC plus all BC I'm pretty much in.
 
The most important thing is gonna be the OS quite honestly. Probably smart that they're actually letting the other companies launch the portable versions this year to at least give them a good test bed for the next launch so it doesn't come in completely hot.

I would imagine that they are trying to unify their gaming and Windows experience into one streamlined operating system that will be the primary consumer Windows option, while delegating the legacy Windows builds to the enterprise/corporate domain. At least this is what they should be working on.

My point is Sony and Nintendo fight hard for console sales and living room presence throughout an entire generation and then try to carry that momentum into the next generation. Microsoft seems to be doing the opposite, almost as if they don't care about the traditional console market anymore.

Maybe I'm reading into that too much and we will get a Series X2 or whatever. Or maybe they will shift to Windows Xbox app gaming. Who knows…Xbox is such a beautiful, retarded mystery these days.

Don't get me wrong, fine choice but again this will be a flailing fight with nearly identical chipsets that require DF to zoom 1000% to see a difference. Boring.

I miss the old days where hardware had some flavour to gain an advantage or just different processing philosophy.

Currently is all that matters, however when the 'traditional console' is released, that won't support windows games or Steam/EGS either and i'll be correct then as well, I'm never wrong when it comes to Microsoft, they just dangle enough carrot for their fanboys to make wild claims, the rest of us roll our eyes and wait.
 
Eh......don't know how well a $1k "traditional console" is going to do. Steam integration is exciting, but I don't really see this as much competition for Sony at that price. Now if Sony also comes in at $1k then the whole damn console industry might as well implode

It's going to be a niche product for the hardcore Xbox fans that's about it. It will most likely push more people towards PS if anything. Last I remember Xbox still had a ton of people on Xbox one so those users will most likely move over to PS.

There wouldn't be enough of a reason to buy this if you are just going to run the same games. Some people might want to buy this but most won't. People usually upgrade only when there is a game they want on it.

And really, the truth is that powerful hardware is harder to make, so don't expect any real improvements. That is why PS6 will not be for a while. Hardware upgrades have slowed down in real life and pushing harder just means spending more.

If it can run PC games yet also has hardware that makes it backwards compatible with the old Xbox library then it will be a truly unique product garnering a lot of attention.

Same as it works on the upcoming handheld.
The handheld won't support GTA6 either.

Edit: I should add that there is a chance they can get it through as BC but Rockstar may not be happy given it's a PC and they would rather PC gamers buy the PC release.

They already spent ~$75B at this point. They are officially in sunken cost fallacy. They figure they can make the money back faster if they still have a platform and sub service to bank off of. They don't really have a choice at this point

If so, I hope Microsoft expands the compatibility of the old Xbox library to any PC, not just the "Xbox" console they produce.

They've stated their intentions with this video so I wouldn't be surprised if something like that happens. I highly doubt the backwards compatibility will just be software based which makes this not "just a PC".

They can't do that legally, that would break the licensing agreement. That is why there is a separate "Play Anywhere" category of Xbox games.

That works. But it would cost them as much as it cost Sony for PS3 launch edition. But it certainly is a physical possibility.

Yeah, $1K is gonna be a lock, especially if it is delivering anything between PS5 Pro and (hypothetical, since we don't know performance specs yet) PS6 levels.

They can't keep bringing close to the same product to market as Playstation and in the same time frame and hope to get anywhere

Trust me I don't think this is the way but I also think its better for them to at least attempt something different
 
I wonder how 3nm fab capacity factors in to all this. Presumably all next gen chips will be competing for supply. Apple obviously takes the lions share, but the US 3nm TSMC fab has been moved up to 2027 I believe so perhaps that plays a part, not least in keeping costs down (tariffs).

That would be stillborn. No it has to be a juiced version of a PS6 in broad terms to have a purpose, hence I don't see it releasing much outside the PS6 window because it will require the same tech base. To the best of my knowledge the PS6 is kind of on the leading edge timewise of that yes?

god knows how much I like the Xbox but honestly Microsoft should skip two gens this is the way to go but that's not my decision it's theirs and they've already decided to go All in.

If Microsoft really are bringing a USD$1000.00 console to market, I imagine Sony's prices won't be too far off when the PS6 lands. Not sure an industry built around USD$1000.00 entry-level hardware is going to thrive, frankly.
