Xbox has announced a multi-year agreement with AMD to co-engineer new silicon chips for the next-generation of Xbox consoles

Well, the last time they did this they stole a shitton of proprietary research that Sony had paid for and created an unexpectedly performant system...

...Which they then knee-capped by nickel-and-diming on manufacture resulting in the RROD fiasco.

Lets see if history repeats.

Seriously…fucking cringe. No one wants Microsoft hardware

GAF wants to exist in some alternate reality where Microsoft isn't a multi-trillion-dollar company that has been making video games since their inception. Even if Xbox was the disastrous failure that people here try to paint it as, MS could keep it going just to fuck with people for the laughs.

They have to keep it going because they own two publishers now. They don't have a choice.

The people who are excited by this, may I ask why?

They abandoned this generation consoles in record time. Why do you trust them again??
How they abandoned? They are realising games every 2 months. They just released doom dark ages.

I'm excited because will be a capable machine with steam and console friendly interface.

Do you even understand what happens to the brand you're with when there's no competition?
Let these dumbasses get their console monopoly. It's just like politics. People latch onto brands/political parties/whatever, like sports teams. I'll be laughing when these guys are paying 300 dollars a year for PS+, paying 1000 for PS7 pro's, and spending 120 bucks on dualsense v3s. Doesn't matter to me much, I have my PC, PS2, 360, PS3, PS5, series x. I can stop buying new systems/games and be totally held over for the rest of my life.

For the past 6 months so many threads on GAF…

-Xbox console sales abysmal- they can't compete!
-Xbox releasing games on PlayStation - their hardware is dead!
-Xbox raising prices and pulling consoles off the shelves - They are going 3rd party!

And yet now we are supposed to believe they will just release another traditional console?

But who said it would be a traditional console? The fact that it isn't bound to one store is unprecedented. And the OS is going to be Windows. It's anything but a traditional console. It's just a custom prebuilt windows PC with a software lock and a bundled controller. I'm sure someone out there will jailbreak it in no time and use it to mine bitcoin, just for the giggles!

They put the prices up across the board for games, hardware and accessories. Stores and entire regions are no longer stocking the consoles.

It's like and seems that the production of the machines have significantly reduced. There doesn't seem to be any marketing of the machines anymore.

Hearing this news today indicates they are looking at the next device and not worrying about today's.

It's almost as if threads on GAF don't dictate Microsoft's future hardware plans.

They did repeatedly say they were making further next gen hardware…and have teased multiple storefronts on their next gen hardware for quite some time.

The average consumer is also going to be completely confused about what this thing even is. It's going to be interesting how they market this thing so that the casual person knows wtf they're even looking at and why they should buy it etc. I just see this thing as a failure coming from a mile away honestly.

Why would it be hard to market?

It's a box.
You hook it up to your TV.
It plays your Xbox library
It plays 'next gen' games from the Xbox marketplace.

It'll also run Steam, a massive storefront. It's very well known by even casual gamers.

The price would really be the major sticking point, but I suspect they'll market it with subscription free online gaming. Most likely they won't be able to charge for online play.

Appreciate the response. But have you not been annoyed with them curtailing this generation of consoles (despite being well upto spec) very prematurely?
I'm not. console generations used to be 4 years before nintendo had to have motion controls forcing both sony and xbox to incorporate them into the PS3/360 extending the generation by too long.

By ending a generation prematurely.

Why would they take next generation seriously, after quitting this one early.

Prematurely?

Even if it releases next year, it'd be 6 years between generations. And you'll continue to see year(s) of cross-gen games afterward regardless.

I think the traditional Xbox console is dead dead.
Press text (not the cringey video) is almost entirely about the future of Windows 11 as a gaming platform, so I see Xbox Hardware as a reference Surface-like device and nothing more, really.

People are gearing themselves for a disappointment.

"Not locked to a single store or tied to one device"

Pretty much guarantees it's going to be like the Xbox Ally handheld where the next Xbox is going to let you access multiple stores. I like this. I REALLY like this.

"all while maintaining compatibility with your existing xbox games"

This is what we all like to hear.

With the way she said access to all your games it has to be a traditional console. I don't believe for one second they resolved all the licensing issues involved in brining over your whole library to PC. If they figured that out why would they bother promoting play anywhere so much? The new console would automatically be play anywhere.

So, they are abandoning Xbox...by making more of them?
I don't think they are abandoning them but there is a real possibility they could the Valve route and you can only really but it off their website.

I wonder how much Microsoft needs to pay to get this where it needs to be. All the licensing hurdles and whatnot, convincing publishers to put their games on the MS store. Has to be a nightmare to navigate.
The way they're wording it makes me think devs can just release regular PC versions as usual on any PC store.

- Not locked to a single store or a tied to specific hardware. Working closely with the Windows team to make Windows the best place to play.

That's 100% PC speak.

Could still be a nightmare to get regular PC versions running well on hardware not capable of brute forcing it.
Maybe they're asking devs for a specific Xbox preset, like on Steam Deck.

If you think we needed Phil Spencer to get a new Doom game then I have a bridge to sell you.

Majority of those games were coming anyways.

I used to think this, but I feel they may give this one last go before folding and becoming a Surface-like device.

I think that's a given. No other way this can possibly work.

Three years ago I bought a Series X for $379 on Black Friday sale at Walmart.

Today those same shelves at Walmart are empty and the cost of the Series X online is prohibitively expensive.

Microsoft's actions and their words don't seem to be lining up to me (with traditional console ecosystem at least)

With all the recent news - with it being harder and harder to find consoles it sounds like they have thrown in the towel for this iteration of consoles.

Do you genuinely think production of the
Series S/X are healthy atm, before taking into account the almost FU like price hikes announced?

The handheld isn't bound to one store, it also doesn't play Console Xbox Games, but it doesn't stop them trying to sell you on the fact it does, the traditional console will run a proprietary xbox OS that does not run Steam or Windows games.

The way Sarah talks, no way they're doing emulation here. This is in silicone no doubt. Maybe they're baking in some Series silicone into an otherwise PC compatible APU somehow?

I'm fairly certain what they call their "future console" will just be a PC. They can't sell actual Xbox consoles outside of the US. It's a dead end for them.

We already know they're working on a new game preservation project, which is likely some form of emulation, and will be critical for moving existing Xbox players over to the PC side. What titles make the cut is anyone's guess.

I'm not sure what this has got to do with them pledging to make powerful, flagship next gen hardware.

Looks like they're phasing out the subsidies on hardware.

I stand by my words. They can even call it a console for marketing (Surface was custom to to a degree), but in it's heart it will be a slightly tweaked Windows 11 PC.

Well Kepler shot this down and said they legally can't do this. So I don't know how they are going to do this.

I dunno about that, man.

It's using Windows so don't expect native anything from old Xbox code.
