You wouldn't be short for work.

I'd rather be Batman to save the brand behind the scenes than being a public figure, cause this way is more effective, last longer and more pro life cause I've got a lot other important things to do without compromising my role "working a real job" and my lifestyle. For example, I've convinced my older brother to like Halo and it's one of the greatest things that I've ever did to my older brother to find what he's missing in the shooting genre.

Phil Spencer really fucked up the Xbox brand real good. A pity, because without competition Sony will have even less incentive to care about quality games or just actually releasing a game.

How did Microsoft manage to fuck up all the momentum they had from the 360 era to what it is now. It's really a shame, more competition = good

I'd work anywhere if the money was right.

I'm lucky enough to have a good money-to-worklife-enjoyment ratio with my current job, so the pay would have to be pretty high. But everyone has their price.

If it's a job, then why not? The salary level, plus the experience you'll get there, are more than worth it. Love or dislike for a certain brand and the ability to earn money for your family to provide them with a comfortable life. These are slightly different things.

No

I don't like the idea of being totally subservient with a chance of redundancy regardless.

A lot of job losses yet the likes of Greenberg and Spencer are still there and Sarah Bond comes across no better either.

I wouldn't work for any video game company as it is such a volatile market with regular redundancies and reports of excessive overtime (the so-called 'crush') and whatnot. Does not sound like a good career to be in at all unless you are a CEO or something and then you can just blame everyone else lower down the 'rung'!

Definitely would not work for Microsoft though. They are, for me, the worst (by far) of the three main video game players, the other two being Nintendo and Sony, of course. I mean this is the company that messed up the Xbox brand so badly that they had to go multi-format for their (few) first-party games and they are also responsible for Windows 11 (which is an operating system that feels like I am playing Russian Roulette every time they release an update for my PC...).

Hell no. I thought about applying for the MS office in Atlanta, but now I'm glad I didn't. Thousands laid off while they rake in massive profits. Obviously they put little value in their people.

Topher Topher - I love you honey, but let's be honest, this is a common occurrence for any multi-billion dollar corporation. Unfortunately, when the choice is between increasing profits and making nice reports for investors, versus the people who work there. The choice will always be in favor of the first option, no matter where you work. :messenger_grinning:

Oh....I have no delusions on that and I'll say the same thing about any company that lays off folks like MS has been. But MS is the richest company in the world. I'm certainly not going to give them any breaks because others are just as bad.

If I was jobless and they paid me good, I wouldn't hesitate.

At least for a time and knowing in some years I would be fired.

It would be Cool
being on those MS Teams reunions pondering to destroy Sony or buy Nintendo as unfathomable gurus of gaming.

Only die hard fanboys wouldn't take a job at Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony, no matter what platform you have at home.

I understand this perfectly well and fully support it. But imagine, you have a regular job, family, etc., and a MS employee comes to you and hands you a contract that specifies the salary and working conditions at MS. And just for the sake of interest, I want to sit next to such a person and see how he will say No. :messenger_grinning:

P.S - In words and posts, everyone is brave and principled.

I think MS pays well and has great benefits, so why not. I bet it would be a good job. And most people are insulated from the community. I would have them fix some things about the Elite Controller.

At Nintendo I am sure you have very little work life balance. But I bet they pay well too.

One of my friends did for a bit. That's how I got some info of some stuff ahead of time. Got laid off and now works at Playstation. Happy for him to jump to the other side like that.

Typically if someone is being offered a job from Microsoft then they have the skills that gives them plenty of options. As a software developer for 25+ years, I've worked for companies that pay well and treat you like shit. I look at Microsoft today and, for me, it is an easy "thanks, but no thanks". That's coming from experience, not principles. That's just not an environment that I find appealing when I see other options that I think are better, including my current position. But if someone isn't taking into account the layoffs at Microsoft (or any company like them) then I don't think they are looking at the whole picture clearly. Either way, folks would do well to look sideways at whatever corporate recruiters promise.

MS Pay breakdown

$166K

Median Total Pay

Base Pay 85%
$106K - $198K/yr
$141K/yrmedian

Bonus 15%
$19K - $35K/yr
$25K/yrmedian

Pretty competitive.

Not if you are in Redmond, Washington

Yikes.

Cost of Living in Redmond, Washington

▲43%
higher than national avg.
▲100%
Housing
▲2%
Utilities
▲11%
Groceries

Redmond, Washington's cost of living is 43% higher than the national average. The cost of living in any area can vary based on factors such as your career, its average salary and the real estate market of that area.

I know MS has a lot of remote work, so that could be an option.

I do think Base pay for Engineers and the like is better.

I work for a soulless American corporation currently so I would be a hypocrite if I said I wouldn't. Whoever pays the most, gives me the best benefits and has the best work life balance has my employment. I'm not going to virtue signal to people who they should or shouldn't work for. If it's legal it's fair game.

It was a good job 10 years ago when there was very little accountability and they spent a lot of money trying to break through into the market. Now, it's under a microscope and not doing well.

Xbox is reportedly a very good brand to work for and have been in gaming for nearly 30 years and have never known anyone to leave willingly. That may be because they have very few openings, but I don't know.

One thing I can tell you is that even though Xbox maybe a great brand to work for, it is still the gaming industry and the same industry isn't for everybody. Given their business model , I would imagine PR jobs aren't plentiful, so they most likely have mostly customer service jobs open. This means you work when customers are cooing, which is when they are not settled down. Count on working primarily evenings and weekends.

Also dealing with the public - in my experience over 99% of Xbox customers range from tolerable to wonderful, the few that are less than tolerable can be quite taxing to those who are not suited for the job. Don't think being a GAF member prepared someone for that. I have talked to a number of GAF members and not all are cut out for Xbox, though they may not be cut out for posting either.
Sure, why not. Sounds fun.
