Remember when Xbox tried to raise the price to play online from $60 to $120 per year, but had to immediately roll it back?

Well, these geniuses found a way to do it again with almost no one complaining.

The strategy was by pissing consumers off about their new $650/$800 prices for old hardware and their new $360 yearly price for GamePass Ultimate, hardly anyone noticed they've reintroduced a $120 floor if you want to play online at all on Xbox consoles.

Pure marketing genius and another reason Xbox consoles are flourishing.

Have you been sleeping?
I think Sooner Sooner means everyone is complaining about the Ultimate price hike but have overlooked that Microsoft did away with an annual plan on the cheapest tier again?

edit: I wouldn't call it marketing genius though, with how dead Xbox is becoming, who is going to even bother with the cheapest plan annual plan or not?

lol I forgot about that. They showed what their end state was. Funny it was announced after that unwashed Jeff Grubb went on record expecting console online multiplayer to go free lmao.

They were going to increase Gold to $10.99/month, $20.99 for 3 months and $59.99 for 6 months.

The pricing of Gamepass Essential is identical to the pricing of Gamepass Core which for 1 month ($9.99) is the same as what xbox live gold used to cost. You can also buy a year of Gamepass Core for $75 from Amazon.

So if they take away the 12 month codes from retailers yes it'll effectively be $120/year, but it's not right now. It's still priced similarly to Xbox Live Gold. It's $75 a year from retailers, and the same $10/month from MS as it was years ago.

Gold used to cost $9.99 for 1-month, $24.99 for 3-months, $39.99 for 6-months and $59.99 for 12-months (only from retailers). Monthly is the same, annual is 25% more. Considering in the same time period gamepass ultimate has risen by 100%, not 25%, it's no surprise all the attention is on that.

If that is what he was saying it was as clear as mud, but that makes a lot more sense

P.S
Xbox Live Gold was 10 bucks a month, Gamepass Essential is 10 bucks a month.
If you a buy a year of Gamepass Core its $75.
Theyve just removed the option of buying the 12 months directly from MS.

The pricing is actually the same to play online.

And people went ballistic, and they bent the knee immediately … Now people have gone nuclear… Do you think Xbox will bend the knee again?

The beautiful irony is that if retards like Ryan are framing this as pure greed, Xbox PR and shitheads like Phil and Sarah are put in a weird position (again).

1. Pure greed implies Xbox is doing great as a business= Course correct should be easy. Just adjust the price hike to be less aggressive or completly backtrack.

2. Actually Xbox is in the red and they need to improve profit margin ASAP. (Caught in the lie again)

so what's it going to be, savior Phil?

Paying to play online was never in our best interests. They fucked us there to start- especially when they sold everyone on the "value"
Best value i had was free online and ultimately Sony and Nintendo were "pressured" into doing it.

Most things Microsoft has introduced have been disguised under "value" for the gamers.

Dude, yesterday was the worst day for Xbox fucking EVER like they will be lucky if there is an Xbox in the future. Dude, there was an Xbox gangbang yesterday on every message forum in the world. IGN got in on it. Our inquisitorius on Youtube already has videos out and many more to come. Journos who usually hate us spent all night furiously writing articles agreeing with us. Everyone across the ideological spectrum came together to hate Xbox for this.

...but you think they got a free pass?

Got me thinking, Xbox Series are getting removed from varied stores across multiple countries, prices are crazy up for the console, now GamePass is 30 bucks, Microsoft clearly want Xbox to be a subscription service, ideally available on other platforms ( other consoles included) , in streaming etc...

So keeping that in mind, they will backtrack with a "we heard you guys" and propose a new tier for GamePass at a lower price with ads during gameplay or in menus.

Perhaps they will make a "all in" subscription including the console for free if you subscribe for 3 to 4 years straight for like 40 bucks per month, day one games included.

Imagine getting a "next gen" console for 50 bucks per month with GamePass, the console could be on a leasing and they would upgrade the model you got with a new one if they got a pro model, basically you'll be forever stuck with a subscription.

PC GamePass will get a price hike soon too

people are mad
If they change PC game pass they ll kill the service on PC since we are not locked to MS ecosystem, now on Xbox they can do whatever they want since console player dont have another options, its like what Xbox players ll do ? Migrate to another plataform and lose all their games ?

They can sell their Xbox console and buy a Switch 2 or PS5. And YES!!!! Start over. It's tough, but at some point they'll have to make a choice since MS isn't giving them any other option.

Yeah, tell that to MS cause they seen to not believe on that possibility.

On a 36 month contract totalling $1800 that sounds like a living nightmare.
Yeah, "Next Gen is always Now" you got covered for the entire generation, newer hardware available to you day one, 50 buckaroos per month, all games day one, 5 years subscription, console on leasing you return the old model to get the new one. Dystopian Box. You own nothing.

The sad part is that a lot of ppl would make that deal

They knew exactly what was gonna happen yesterday, after raising the price by 50% at once....

They are doing it on purpose to have the perfect excuse to finally kill off Xbox consoles for good....

They're taking the Trump approach; overwhelm people with stupid changes in quick succession to try and get in as many of the changes in under the radar.

They aren't just complaining. They're outright cancelling and planning to switch platforms, leaving their libraries behind altogether. Seems like it's as bad a result as you could imagine.

If they used GamePass for years they don't have much of a library at this point....

GamePass = rental

They own nothing

The fact paying a sub at all got normalized for online gaming is still one of the dumbest scams in this industry. You're not even paying the people hosting and maintaining the game servers.

Microsoft will reap what they sow, in an already weak position.

Microsoft isn't going to rollback these price changes. They WANT people to get mad and unsubscribe so they can justify killing Ultimate and ending day one gamepass games. I think thats what they REALLY want. They want to weasel their way out of day one gamepass drops for first party games.

Sony did that shit with PS plus and there was one day of complaning and nothing happened

"are you really going with Sony too?" except that they decided to stand with that and nothing happened, it is the same shit when Apple pulled out chargers and P3 audio port from the Iphones, lots of Android fans complained that it was only a matter of time until Samsung and others would do and lo and behold, they did.

Even if Sony is the obvious leader, the competition will start to go cynical because people are allowing this shit to happen in the first place, it isn't a matter of just X, it is a matter of shit stuff that everyone will follow up.

They learned Sony's lessons why they raised 33% and nobody walked out.

Yes and the "marketing genius" was sarcasm.

One day of complaining? How about over a month.

No one complaining... My man, they are getting roasted worse than the Xbox one reveal
Ok, clearly I didn't word things well.

I mean everyone is so busy complaining about GamePass going to $30 a month, very few are mentioning the fact the cost to play online at all went up from $60 to $120 per year.

A while back, MS raised the prices from $60 to $120 and immediately rolled it back because of outrage. Now, they've done it again.
