Hmm… this seems like a weird move. I assume they had a contract, wonder why the guy caved.

Comments seem semi-offensive and a bit dumb, but not terrible enough to cause the cancellation. Then again, UK is in a very weird state now as far as policing the internet goes.
 
I mean Russia had the Dendy and not the NES. Maybe that doesn't apply to this, but yeah some countries didn't get a Nintendo. Dendy is the NES to people who grew up in Russia.

Sounds like they're being stupid about a stupid comment.

i get the feeling it one of those 'you'll never work in this town again' things? except i can't tell if it's real or just in the heads of these people that they go after? they always seem to be so intimidated...

A guy thinking SNES sucks is not less capable of knowing the SNES library of RPGs and having a clear and objective opinion about it.

People have become unbelievably dumb.

Bitmap Books suck anyway. They remove negative reviews from their site to pretend their books are fantastic. The one about all JRPGs was riddled with mistakes and a total waste of money. They never published my negative review.
 
Cancel culture does not exist.
It's been replaced by "give all your royalties to charity forever" culture.
They didn't have the balls to cancel the guy completely because they would probably lose too much content for an already planned and announced book.

Shame. I wasn't going to buy this one, but I own and have enjoyed several of their books, at least for the printing quality and the iconographic content.
 
Well, that's embarassing. I thought the 'wanting to appeal to everyone and everything' trend was over, but evidently not.
 
I bought their War of the Worlds book. The art was really bad.

Most of their retro books seem to just be pasting some key art and screenshots on the pages and then calling it a coffee table book.

Nerds will see this combination of Googled images and a description of the game which an AI could've written and be like "I need this"

Brazil also didn't get the NES, it was a shit ton of clones thou. Maybe the most known was Dynavision 2 - the first one was an Atari 2600 clone
 
Imagine you find out they are in cahoots with the charity, ironically that would be a classic 3rd world country corruption move.

I have the Speedball book they made, not opened it yet, seemed like they went into good detail with the screenshots applied a custom filter made by Tim Lottes. I can't speak to the quality of the writing though.

I think that book is by ROM not Bitmap
 
Videogame book publishing is made of the rejects from vanity publishing companies.
In the literary world they are considered the lowest of the low, it would be less frowned upon to be a straight up scam publisher asking for huge upfront fees.
 
I like how some dude posts a few tweets and says "Over this?" and everyone assumes that's it. Do you *really* think that's all it took for them to take this step? Don't you think that if that was it the author would be screaming about it on social media? His silence speaks louder than words. In that same thread, if you scroll down and read it all, someone posts "He is a complete asshole and pest. Literally plagues Facebook groups with his trolling."

You can have a debate on whether or not a company should take its employees (freelance or not) to task for social media posts, sure, but acting like this guy is a saint and being crucified for nothing is silly.

Just using this thread to tell people about Pat Contri's "ULTIMATE guide" books. They're all incredible and worth buying.

I kickstarted his first NES book, and I think that one might currently be out of print, but the SNES one is available. He has an N64 book out now too, but I haven't gotten that one yet.

But they're incredible coffee table books, for real. Highly recommended.

Well, Brazilian is not a race, but this is certainly not a great look.

That said, the whole thing seems a large overreaction.

And as far as Bitmap Books go, I have several books from them and they have been very solid in quality, IMO.

Yeah, it's definitely pricey. But it's a beefy-ass book, and the reviews are very well-written. Certainly something to treat yourself to for your birthday or something.

I love getting a bit inebriated and just opening to a random page to read about games I haven't played yet. It's the kind of book I can read for a couple minutes, or a couple hours.

Racism means discriminating based on race, he implied (in a rude way) that some countries do not have modern consoles so they would be excited to play really old consoles still.

How does race come into that? Especially when its Brazil which has a crazily wide ranging selection of different races living there. So saying "Brazilians" doesn't in any way narrow it down to a race anyway.

I'm really not getting how this is racist or even xenophobic, its just factual that they didnt get some modern consoles there.

I'm Scottish, English people say everyone here is drinking all the time, addicted to heroin and is unhealthy from fried and sugary food. That doesn't apply to everyone... but also this is one of the capitals for heroin addiction, socially accepted ultra high levels of drinking and eating food thats really bad for you.

I get its a fine line, but I assume that people engage in exaggerated generalisations to make a joke sometimes.

I like their books and will continue to buy the books that interest me.

I'm not really into politics or social media (aside from some forums) so I tend to miss most of the "controversies" that get people all riled up. I'm glad for that because it seems like people can find reasons to boycott anything these days. I don't do that. I just buy what I like.
 
So:
  • Author of a book said some things in 2022 on the internet people may find edgy
  • Author of book a few years later works with publisher on a book
  • Publisher of book finds out 2022 edgy things
  • Author of book apologizes
  • Publisher of book ceases operations with author of book.

I feel the publisher is at fault here and this could have been resolved privately. Literally no need to drag this online unless you want a puritain's sword.

I literally bought quite a crapshoot of Bitmap Books bookworks and i couldn't give a crap on what an author says online. Does it affect the book i bought? Not really, eh?

I wonder why. I bought the FPS series of books and they were pretty damn awesome as they mention a lot of obscure titles. Plus i like things physical. So yeah, sue me for vanity.

Because a lot of racism is lighthearted. It isn't racism. People use jokes to make light of heavy things. And yes, that means being absurd. Its like a whole comical genre.

I know, i know. Everything is racist these days. Even the screen i am writing this on is racist (White background, but physical screen is black? WTF monitor companies GTFO appropiating this), calling something racist has practically no value anymore in the young ones society.

So Bitmap will still make their money, after issuing some bullshit statement, while the author will get nothing?

What that says is Bitmap doesn't actually care about what the author had said. If they actually did, they'd cancel the book altogether.

Releasing it and supposedly only cutting his royalties makes them look way worse.

Also, the tweets were fucking nothing. I guess people in the UK are just as fragile and delusional as those in the US.
 
Truth is, the SEGA Master System is still FUCKING HUGE in Brazil. Where's the lie? I don't see any xenophobia in that statement.
