Xbox community criticizes DF's bias (in Thumbnails) towards the new Xbox console in their coverage

The entire discussion began after viewers compared two of DF's latest videos. One of them titled "DF Direct Weekly #235: Microsoft Re-Confirms Next-Gen Xbox, Red Dead 2 Remaster Heavily Rumoured" and another called "Sony/AMD Project Amethyst Update – Next-Gen Tech Revealed + Mark Cerny Q&A."

In the thumbnail of the former, DF team members appear serious or even disappointed, and in the thumbnail of the latter, they're smiling. That alone was enough to spark the entire discussion, accusing the outlet of bias.

Twitter user @JBishie argued that the expressions were "deliberately selected to evoke a negative response," suggesting that DF paused frames to make Xbox coverage look gloomy. Others, like @Emmanuel, agree and note how the PS5 Pro leak video was full of laughter and excitement, while discussions about Xbox were "gloomy" and lacking enthusiasm.

One theory that we think is interesting comes from user @Upperthighs, who says that "Xbox negativity brings in views, PlayStation positivity brings in views." The user basically implies that engagement tactics may play a role. But other users also argue that DF's tone reflects the reality of Xbox's current struggles.

"No one likes Microsoft's strategy right now," said one user. And we can't really argue with that.

Their Reputation is Now Under the Microscope

Part of why this debate has exploded now is DF's recent shift to full independence. In August 2025, founder Richard Leadbetter announced that he had bought back the outlet from IGN and its parent company Ziff Davis. "We answer to nobody but you, the audience," Leadbetter said to The Verge at the time, emphasizing transparency and editorial freedom.

As we said at the start, Digital Foundry is one of the most respected names in hardware analysis. They are known for their deep dives into console architecture and game performance. With nearly 1.5 million YouTube subscribers and a loyal Patreon base, the outlet's influence in shaping technical discourse is unmatched.

While the team hasn't publicly addressed the new thumbnail and bias controversy, the situation highlights how tone, visuals, and context can be perceived differently. Especially in an environment that's driven by fandom. This probably doesn't take away from any of the outlet's analysis on games, but their reputation still takes a hit.

DF is in a constant state of being Xbox shills, Sony shills, Nintendo shills, Xbox haters, Sony haters, and Nintendo haters.

this is worse than Schrödinger's cat... it's like 5 Schrödinger's cats in one!

I think what you meant was...

My man, we're really stretching to make these topics now, my man?

(I really should change my nick to My Man just for the sake of it, probably will)

My man.

"Xbox community" lol
For a dead console full of lies and empty promises to still having community, thats gold. For what is worth they made a real fair critique when you take account all the shitfest Xbox is doing.
But they also forgot to mention the part where John kinda criticizes the general feeling of Sony, despite having sucess on the console market, feels empty in terms of games, with a full generation mostly composed by remasters and remakes.
So in the end, it's all stupid fanboys only hearing what they want to hear so they can play victims or farm drama. In other words, nothing new.

These xbox twitter personalities are beyond cringe and pathetic. They live their lives every single day breathing in a trillion dollar corporations farts and saying that they smell good. These same clowns wear 'this is an xbox' boxers every single night because they want phil spencer to notice them and their simping ways of life. Pathetic.

I mean, what's the problem with this? How could any sane person be positive towards anything xbox after the shitshow MS has been doing for more than a decade?

That Sony deserves the same attitude is another question.

It's hilarious nonsense, but still.......do these faces not accurately reflect the mood towards Xbox lately?

That dudes pathetic btw folks. I can't stand people like him who get triggered and threaten to block someone when they get exposed. Just block them, instead of saying 'i'm going to block you' like a loser.

It not just them. It is pretty clear people are chasing clicks and negative Xbox news is doing that. Even someone like Matty is doing it with multiple videos not really saying anything new in them. Youtube is full of nobodies trying to get clicks.

The people who had exclusive access to two Xbox console launches are somehow "anti-Xbox"

Xbox fanboys are really stupid, they have no idea what facts, evidence and trends are.

Oh okay, DF are anti-Xbox this week. Can someone let me know next week when their bias changes again?

It says way more about the people that noticed this than it does about DF themselves.

Their entire brand built upon Tech right? I'd would tell you a secret, they play sides with next gen consoles before their launch and this game's never lasted before cause the alternative is they always talk about PC the whole time and when you supposedly capable of shifting narratives, and toward PC specifically, then there's nothing much to say on your channel. If you aren't tired from this formula good for you, but it's highly unlikely the community would like such a thing like that.

I'm getting more tired of these threads than Microsoft's bad decision-making.

Only thing that never gets stale to me out of this though, is that all the console warrior fanboys are equally fun to watch, because they're fighting a war that matters less and less every year...largely over the two AMD apu boxes.

I think they are just reflecting the news that's been out there about Xbox. Rumors upon rumors...overpriced handhelds, gamepass travesties. Xbox's PR is in the tank and that's an undeniable fact no matter where your preferences lie. It Xbox's own fault that their actions have left room to create the narratives that are affecting them right now. Stupid decision after stupid decision. Why would the community just expect shit like this to be swept under the rug and DF should act like nothing is happening.
