Please give it to me. I don't want to play shooters with a normal controller, but I also don't want to use mouse and keyboard on the couch. The Steam Controller is close to mouse level speed and accuracy for me.

From the leaked images, it's more like a traditional dual stick controller than the original Steam controller. Think Steam Deck controls with bigger trackpads.
Edit: Although looking at the new icon, are they replacing the right thumstick with a trackpad? that would make it more like the Steam controler.

No, it requires AA batteries.
The silver lining is that the battery life is very good, but the compartment and mechanism of getting the batteries in and out is an absolute ball-ache.

This device needs to be quite small for those sticks to be comfortable.
Amazed how long its taking to release it, Im also fully expecting it to be half baked.
It will be the form factor but not be TMR sticks or it will have no haptics feedback.

The steam controller was a great option for games that didn't have gamepad support, it also had incredible battery life.
But other than that I don't see a need, and with the majority of pc games now getting console ports even genres that usually skipped gamepad support now have it.
Civilization VII, Planet Coaster 2, Two Point Campus etc.
The steam controller fixed a problem for me that 10 years later doesn't really exist anymore.

It's part of the cad files leaked that also had the VR controllers
They're just the steam deck controllers without the screen if you think of it, analog sticks lower than steam deck. Would make sense for valve to continue compatibility for their upcoming "console", steam deck and eventually steam deck 2

Depends on what you play.
If you're mostly playing titles that also release on console then you won't have a need for it.
But even still, there's stuff like Stellaris CK3 and They are Billions that have releases on console but the console UI and controller support never made their way over to PC. There are also tons of games across various genres that never make their way over to console, and for those the trackpads and flexibility the controller offers are required.
Then there's also the fact that you can use the controller desktop wide and it even works on the windows login screen. So you can literally use the controller to do everything on your PC other than turning it on from a cold boot.
It's come a very long way compared to what it was like when it first released. They've constantly been adding functionality, and it went it to overdrive with the Steam deck release.

Just look at that thing and imagine using the analog sticks. Your range of motion would be absolutely shit and people would barely be able to reach them properly anyway.

I wonder if this and probably PS6 / XBopc will have the last traditional controllers. VR moves probably to hand and finger tracking anyway. While biometric input devices are researched on for quite a while and generally already work. Brain signals for buttons, maybe eye-tracking for movement and aiming. I don't know if that can be as relaxed as it is now but might work really well, without ergonomics troubles and breaking mechanical parts.

They could have simply copied the layout of the Steam Deck exactly if they wanted to. So I doubt they will make something that is less comfortable, although I'm sure ymmv.

Loved the trackpad (with momentum flicks, and mouse mode for point and click or strategy games) on original Steam controller. I'd take it over all dual stick controllers every day, it's an infinitely better experience. Still use it on PC, when I'm not going full mouse. I'd rather quit PC gaming than ever go back to any dual stick handicapped experience.
