Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection |OT| Absolutely Toasty

Playing through the genesis version of mk2 just puts a smile on my face man so many memories i love this collection. It's unbelievable how good the snes version of mk2 holds up.

Bought it on Switch 2. So far everything plays and looks fine.

Side note - Wild how much input lag the first Mortal Kombat had on the SNES.

Question - is there cross play between consoles?
I loved MK on the SNES because of the sound -- I wanted to hear those voice clips and the uppercuts. But, yeah -- the delay was unreal.

That's why the genesis was better for action games. Less lag and faster response time. Same with Street Fighter 2 on the genesis. Same with Madden, NHL hockey and all the sports games.

Now that I brought up the genesis vs snes fight, I'm out.

I think I heard someone say that the snes version of the first Mortal Kombat was better due to the controller but the lag really is a dealbreaker.

October has been ridiculous

Horrible reviews on Steam. I warned some about this collection. Digital Eclipse has always been trash tier too.

Very let down on this Kollection. Sound is God awful. Broken in Mk2 Arcade. No online friendly matches, no leaderboards. I feel some bad input delay as well. Hope they patch this game soon. Definitely broken atm.

Expanding on the review:
This game does very little for preservation as assets are poorly upscaled, made-up assets, assets stolen from the MKWarehouse and has barely any actual commentary from actual MK fans like Tabmok for example, instead you get random streamers that nobody really cares about, unused sprites barely get any light and only get generic comments except for VERY few cases where Ed Boon or Tobias comment on what it was (It happens like twice or thrice).

I begged for this Kollektion to happen so hard for at least a decade and now where it is here... it has been created by a bunch of people that seemingly have no love, passion or even interest in the franchise.
It's just so extremely soulless.

While I understand that some editions (Especially N64, Saturn, Dreamcast, Atari) are missing and some ports like MK4 PS1 too. I have no understanding why you'd exclude even inhouse game of MK4 for the GBC. Yes it was one of the worst games ever created (and foreshadowing how this kollektion might turn out it seems) but it's still part of the franchise.

While I read once or twice that Digital Eclipse will be trying to get the licenses for the missing ports, I am honestly doubting this after I see this port.

Just take the Menus, the Backdrops for the 4:3 games... it's all extremely low effort images, no real selection. The Menu could be inspired by the games, have sprites of the characters alive and dead everywhere, be maybe some re-imaginations of stages or anything that is just screaming MORTAL KOMBAT but instead it's a lifeless plain menu. The Backdrops are one low res image upscaled and that's it. No fitting backdrop that resembles the game, no selection for different backdrops or anything.

Sounds like something that may be worth waiting on. Plenty of descriptive and positive reviews on Steam, but negative ones as well.

Yeah, par for the course for most Steam launches. Some games are praised to the moon or are review bombed by people wanting to join the bandwagon. I don't even read them anymore.

I'd rather hear from some folks here on GAF or my friends to get a sense of how it is, unless I end up playing it myself.

Some things that absolutely infuriate people may not bother me at all 🤷‍♂️

I am stunned that they could get such a clean picture and instant loading on Mortal Kombat Trilogy. I have also never known that the SNES version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 was such a good port with features I thought were exclusive to Trilogy (like Rain and Noob). Love the moveset display, accessible extra options, and rewind feature across games in this release.

I am kinda ticked off by some of the decisions made in this collection based on my Series S experience though:
1. The 32X version of Mortal Kombat II is missing sounds and probably other things.
2. No pixel accurate aspect ratio as it only gives 4:3 and fullscreen for everything.
3. The single TV filter (disregarding curvature) has a whitish glow with no way to change brightness so it looks more washed out than the source picture and there is no more options.
4. There is no audio filter to boost frequencies like decent speakers on old televisions.

P.S. All the portable releases are gutter trash with crappy LCD graphics filters but I was not going to play them anyway.

P.S.S. Mortal Kombat 4 was crap then and is still crap now so even if this is the definitive version of it... it still sucks.

High praise from you.

I love the SNES ports of MK but I grew up with them so I'm biased. I thought MK3 was superior to UMK3 but I couldn't quantify why.

You preferred a more concise smaller list of fighters and arenas? lol
I remember UMK3 being heavily compromised like the port of Street Fighter Alpha 2 was. I don't know. It's been ages. The hardware was extremely dated by the time UMK3 dropped.

Fake Edit:
SNES UMK3 - June 1996
PS1 MK Trilogy - October 1996

That must have been why I was so down on it. Once I got a PS1 the SNES versions were crap.

That is interesting. I tried MK3 SNES version as well but missing moves (added in later revision) and animations relative to UMK3 were kind of jarring. I would be interested in reading/watching a comprehensive comparison of the two versions.

There is some really questionable balancing in Trilogy which could make this version preferable to me even with arcade imperfect sounds and animations. Just like I prefer 32X version of MK2 to arcade version. Sadly the Wavenet version of UMK3 feels like a half step toward Trilogy.

Yeah, no doubt about that lol

I never did play that Sub Zero game, kinda want to give it a go. I am sure it's shit. But that's ok

The SNES versions are my preferred games on emulation devices like the Miyoo Mini Plus. They feel snappier to play IMO.

What in the actual fuck ?

Where are MKII on Game Gear and UMK3 on MegaDrive ? These ports were excellent.
Also SEGA-CD MKI would have been nice. The game had many improvements.

Also I am sure that I saw MKII on GG in one of the previous trailers. Lame.

If you are going to throw in an emulator for a console, just put all the games as well !

Yeah exactly. Yeah, Steam reviews don't really do their job anymore, it's just a review bomb and meme cesspool for the most part. If anything I'll click scroll down, see if there's anything of merit, and move on. I'd rather just watch raw gameplay videos and go by that, it's probably more fruitful honestly. I mean, yeah, them using AI is pretty lame and silly, but I don't think it'd be a huge deal breaker for me if everything else is solid. So, we'll see I guess, lol.

They ran out of memory on umk3 snes to fit all the characters. As a result the levels have static backgrounds whereas mk3 on snes had the background animations. I think

It has like 100 reviews mostly from enthusiasts....

SNES UMK3 has only 7 stages unlike 11 in MK3. Rooftop and Khan stage in common with a heavily different portal stage. Every other stage is different. Relative to Arcade version of MK3 only the graveyard is missing. Despite the missing stages in UMK3 there are entire specials added over MK3 version and several new characters. Animations also seem less choppy.

P.S. In both SNES versions AI has only pushover and godlike rushdown difficulty. Also Khan hits mid and stuns with every hit without highs that player can counter.

compared to Game Boy Game Gear played like a dream

I'm playing the Steam version and absolutely loving it, zero issues thus far on the Steam Deck, but I'll keep my eyes open for issues. I will say it's a bummer there aren't more filters, but hopefully those arrive in a patch. It's also a real shame that MK Gold isn't included, as it's a much better version of MK4, but there's so much here to applaud that it's tough to complain.

I think I'll pick up the Steam version! I have a bunch of retro controllers for PC, so this would be perfect 🙂

How do the filters work? Can you choose which filters you want to use? Roughly how many are there?

Well, say for example you've got Mortal Kombat 1, the arcade version here. I've got only three filter options: TV, TV curved, and off; and three aspect ratio options under screen mode: original, full, and wide. Border is only one choice, arcade, or off. Admittedly, it's a little bare bones, which is a bummer, but it's a damn fine collection for what it is.

Sweet, thanks! That's not too bad, though. Some collections don't have anything outside of aspect ratios.

Do the filters at least look good?

I love the fatality trainer.

But no wonder I was never able to perform Brutalities. Holy shit those are almost impossible to do even with on-screen instructions.

This collection is sick, but I do wish there was a real Krypt with a bunch of unlockables.

I'm mad that MK4 Arcade doesn't have the PlayStation ending videos .
What does it have? Are they the same scenes only rendered in real time?

What's everyone's favorite memories of MK?

MK2
I was in like 4th or 5th grade when MK2 was released. My mom surprised me with it when I came home from school. I couldn't believe it! My friends and I played it for countless hours trying to fight Jade, Smoke and Noob Saibot.

I played it like crazy during Thanksgiving.

MK3
I'll never forget reading about MK3 in magazines. My friends and I would talk about it at school all the time. I would daydream playing it.

Someone at school caught word that a huge arcade had it. My friend and I begged their parents to take us lol

And there it was. I couldn't believe how amazing it looked in person! There was one guy in like his early 20's playing it and he would beat everyone that walked up to the machine, including me. But I didn't care. Finally getting to play it was like a dream. I remember it very vividly and it was simply one of the best days.

I ended up getting it for SNES and of course had a blast with friends. The PS1 version absolutely blew our minds, though. Felt like we had the arcade in our home.

Now having gone through these memories, I just picked it up on Steam. I can't pass this up!

Just playing OG MK with my friends on Genesis and also SNES

Bought it on Game Gear too.

The announcer. Arenas. Music. Fatalities. The fact it's REAL people. Digitalized. Looked amazing.

I fell Out of love with fighters all together in the 00's but think I need this for the ole Steam Deck

Dude it was SO revolutionary. I couldn't believe the graphics. And yeah, the fatalities were such a crazy thing to have. What a way to stand out from Street Fighter 2.

I haven't been big on fighters, either. I'll play the new SF and MK, but very casually.

The nostalgia for this is strong, though. Can't wait to check out some of the documentary stuff.

It was so "edgy" compared to simple street fighter.

To me back then, I laughed at other fighters. This one was the only one for me. It also lended a major hand in ESRB ratings lol

I'd prefer it be $30. But don't think I can Resist. Gonna have to pick it up.

It really did have a major impact on a lot of ways lol. I remember all that!

I was going to hold off for a sale, too, but man…this is my childhood here.
