Man I wanted one of these but they look weak as shit. I thought you were going to be able to spec them up a bit.
I'm going to have to build a big boy pc one day.

Valve did with Steam Deck so I expect no difference with this. Seems to be doing well for them.I think Valve might take a huge hit on these to get them into people's houses and drive in the "Steam Machines are such a great value" mentality that the Steam Deck currently has a stronghold on.
Let's hope they can price it competitively and keep it as low as they realistically can.
16gb of VRAM pushes it to mid-tier PC pricing, which would be outside a console box unless they went for PS5 Pro pricing. The base PS5 has 16gb of RAM for the entire system, both cpu and gpu tasks to use.
I my perfect world, they would decide on focusing on making games with more fun and less graphics so they can run on the GabeCube.
A man can dream!
I don't even know who its target audience is. After the next gen consoles come out, where will it rank? Above the Switch 2?
The point is lost on me. Pass.
I want to wish the best because Valve typically knows better in regards to this stuff, but considering the current state of... Everything, combined with the ambiguity on the price, it paints a bad picture. The price is going to disappoint everybody, especially with that lackluster performance.I think Valve might take a huge hit on these to get them into people's houses and drive in the "Steam Machines are such a great value" mentality that the Steam Deck currently has a stronghold on.

Same reason I bought Arc Raiders. To screw with Marathon's head. It's just another potato pre build PC that can't be upgraded. Why should I get one??
Do it! I think it makes sense to go budget-friendly for this device for exactly that reason. The gamers looking for a high-end Steam experience are also the ones who would rather build their own system.![]()

All PS5 models are actually 12 GB+ in VRAM
So still much more than 8
It's definitely a tricky time to do this, for sure.I want to wish the best because Valve typically knows better in regards to this stuff, but considering the current state of... It's a shared pool, the PS5 has about 12.5GB of VRAM to use for games (rest is for the background OS stuff), that both the GPU and CPU tasks all have to use together.
Many games will often average around 8GB of VRAM for graphics on base PS5, and the PS5 Pro gets a few more because it adds 2 GB of DDR5 RAM that the background OS uses exclusively.
This Steam Machine has 8gb of VRAM just for the GPU, and 16gb of RAM for the CPU by itself.
What's wrong? Afraid of a couple terminal lines? My gaming PC has a 5090 so yeah uh that's gonna be a no from me dawg
Release Steam OS as a regular Linux distribution you cowards

Same reasons you "needed" the PS5 and Switch 2. To play games that are not on PS5 and/or Switch 2.No, I already have PS5 and Switch 2, why would I need a Steambox?

It's a moot point anyway as this steam machine is actually a 1080p machine
It's weaker than a 3060, so textures won't exceed 8 GB of ram
I already get 90% of the games I'm in to from those two systems. Also I'm already have a hard time catching up with all games coming out for PS5 and Switch 2, I don't think I need another system.Same reasons you "needed" the PS5 and Switch 2. To play games that are not on PS5 and/or Switch 2.
Meaning the GPU can allocate up to 10gb if it needs to.![]()
PS5 has 12.5GB usable RAM for games which is shared between the CPU and GPU depending on load.
PC games aren't tailored for any specific system.
everyone knows 8GB of VRAM on PC is slowly but surely an issue... source: I have an RTX3060ti... and shit is getting really problematic on that thing in some games.
we have seen 8GB cards on PC not being able to keep up with the texture resolution on PS5 or Series X in some titles due to VRAM issues.
Can't wait to buy a Steam Box off Craigslist to put next to my Google Stadia controller on the Shelf of Failed Experiments, right between my Ouya, Kinect, PS Vita TV, and that unopened copy of Anthem.
No way. It's using a one year newer version of the Quest 3 chip, LCD displays, and Valve has already told outlets that it is aiming for a price less than that of the full Valve Index kit, which ran $1,000.1500 for the headset alone.
Also Valve has mentioned they want driver-level support for FSR4 by launch from AMD, so you'll get upscaling that will probably place this around 1440p machine territory. Similar to Sony incorporating FSR4 features into the PS5 Pro's PSSR upscaling for next year.
This is RDNA 3 buddy, FSR4 is for RDNA 4
PS5 Pro's GPU has RDNA 4 ray-tracing/MLA hardware on par with a 9070 in RT/MLA
Here we have a 7600M GPU @ 110W from 2023
Dude, the PS5 Pro was designed and finalized before RDNA 4's release. Its GPU architecture is mainly based on a custom RDNA 2 design (for PS5 game backwards compatibility) with some features selectively back-ported from RDNA 3, but it does not contain RDNA 4 ray tracing or MLA (machine learning accelerator) hardware. It has more compute units, a custom stack management engine, and a performance boost to BVH that helps with ray-tracing performance over the PS5 base.
It's cool stuff, but similar to how PSSR is getting updated to incorporate FSR4 features, you're also seeing AMD work on driver-level FSR4 for RDNA 3 cards. There are even some DX12 games using FSR 3.1 already incorporating FSR4 features, like improved motion clarity on fast camera panning. Neither RDNA 3 cards nor the PS5 Pro GPU are going to run FSR4 with the same performance as RDNA 4 GPUs (no MLA, no FP8 support, etc.), but both will get the better upscaled visuals.
Its weaker than PS5 Pro? I was in the impression its going to be either same level or more powerful than that Pro.Not even as powerful as the PS5 Pro, and probably going to cost the same price or more?
weaker than a base ps5

Nah, I'm good. I will install the SteamOS they use for this box on my PC though!
Full PC experience = RTX 5090 + 9800X3D.Its weaker than PS5 Pro? I was in the impression its going to be either same level or more powerful than that Pro.

I mean If I wanted get in PC gaming wouldn't be batter to pay little more extra get proper PC to get full experience.
This feels like half ass trying to be both PC and console not good at any of it.
Also I'm guessing just like Steamdeck you cant buy this Steam box from regular retailers so its not gonna sell as much as proper consoles.
They put a banana on top of it.Put something compelling on the steam box and I'll consider it
Nope. Ray-tracing is a selling point because they improved the general performance, not literally adding all of the RDNA 4 features in. Cerny himself literally said: "The base technology for PS5 Pro is somewhere between RDNA 2 and RDNA 3,".You are wrong, big time
PS5 Pro has dedicated hardware for RT/MLA like RDNA 4
It was one of the three main selling points of the console
AMD just released the PC cards later
IT's just a mini pc with STeam OS. I wouldn't say hate as much as apathy.I don't get the hate. This is literally a Mac Mini alternative with Steam Os and your whole Steam library.
I love the idea. It's a modern day GameCube and it will give Sony AND Nintendo, some well needed competition.
