MSRP on such a laptop is $1000 and up. No way is Steam Machine over $1k
The fact it is a PC without Windows and only having Steam OS plus Linux is a big deal for many. Most PC gamers only game through Steam. This is just a convenient way to game without having a bulky PC that can be real expensive. Plus not needing keyboard/mouse to navigate.

Valvecube is a PC, but I doubt you didn't think of it as a console because the entire narrative, including Linus's, is that it's a console. You may not know this, but even what's on a video thumbnail is something the manufacturer dictates what to add or remove so if Linus calls it a console, it's because Valve wants it that way, while hypocritically stating on their website that it's a pc.You have an opinion, but are stating it as the only possible option, and it isn't. This isn't competing with consoles for me, didn't think about them at all, they don't enter into this equation for me. It's not a console or this, it was never a console, and this is a net new product for people like myself, and I'm not the only one. Also, the fate of Valve isn't resting on the success of this device, it's just some extra butter on their already massive pile of potatoes.
Should put something to elevate the PC from the carpet like a plank of wood or something. Otherwise it'll become a magnet for dust and fibers from the carpet and will kill your PSU faster (bad airflow and said dust/debris).It isn't loud. It sits on the side of a table completely enclosed. Never gets cleaned out and it runs completely fine. No issues. If I didnt open it up, you guys would just see a plain black case unassuming PC and be none the wiser of what it looks like inside. All the glass openings, neon lights, and excessive amounts of fans are just theatrics.

Yea China brands but still Windows PC'sThey are pre built too? Show me because I've been looking for a mini pc for the last year and all the weak ones are 900+ and the stronger ones are 1500+
I was in the $599 territory.I may be the only one that thinks that with that anemic hardware is going to cost around 450€?
Yeah a privilege of 8gb VRAM and low end GPU , that shit isn't worth more the 500$$600 to $700 does have a justification...folks that are willing to spend $600 plus on a console like experience for the games that said console provides.
Valve sees this like a business, they are offering a low effort entry point into an ENMOROUS library of exclusive titles ( I am referring to games only available on PC) but "you gotta pay for that privilege".
Hm, true. Might have been a bit to quick there.I don't see a dedicated graphics card, and the integrated graphics card only contains 6CUs.

dlssA laptop 4050 or 4060 isn't going to smoke the steam machine.
Oh ok from China of course it's cheap, and not the same specsYea China brands but still Windows PC's
Importing to the US right now might not make it viable anymore though.Windows 10 Mini PC, Intel Compact PC at Geekbuying.com
Mini PC based on Windows 8 or 10 can provide similar performance of the traditional PC but in a much smaller body and lower price. Grab now since $70!www.geekbuying.com
The entry point price is more important than that… Thats why console manufacturers subsidize some systems. And the reason that combustion engines cars still selling more than electric cars.if PS5 is $200 cheaper, you're still stuck with a $15 monthly fee. 1% the game library (or less really). No media creation tools. Far less AV tools. No real creative tools to speak of.
Ever since PSX, consoles brought extra value to the market aside from just game players. I knew a lot of kids who used it as their CD player. I think most people used PS2 and 3 as movie machines. All that is gone. Your TV alone has most of the same AV capability.
Not to mention absolutel uncertainty with backwards compatibility. Coaster libraries could be built. Check the PS3 game shelf at your flea market.
Turns out I didn't think about it as a console as I don't think about consoles at all. I know what it is, and why I am getting it, and I didn't need people on YouTube to tell me what to think about it or how it's not a good deal compared to some console I don't want.Valvecube is a PC, but I doubt you didn't think of it as a console because the entire narrative, including Linus's, is that it's a console. Would you buy a PC without Windows ? Would you have that courage ?Pretty much. Most people around the globe who use a PC casually have never even heard of Linux. Windows has a 71% marketshare of Desktop OS usage.

For a weak ass 8gb vram that is already completely pathetic in the last couple of years let along 2025, it shouldn't be more than 500 realistically and going about this fairly but unfortunately they don't think like normal people so they'll probably try to sell this shit at 700 or even more with them trying to hype the thing up like "look at this cool little box" and "this isn't just a small gaming box but it's a steam gaming box!" so they'll try to high ball the price with it being a cool little thing and also the steam brand name.
If they were fair, this thing would have been 16gb vram with the graphic being a bit better if they're going to sell for 700 to 800 but they won't fair and would be as greedy as possible.
Whatever the case may be, if they're selling for 700 or more than I hope this thing flops just so they'll know 8GB VRAM is retarded.

Same, though windows 11's bloat is an absolute shit showIve been using Windows since Windows 95. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
over 499€ is DOAI'd say anything above $700 is DOA.
fixed that for you.Yeah a privilege of 8gb VRAM and low end GPU , that shit isn't worth more the 500$ to me
I already bought a pc without windows the steam deck and it's much better for gamingWould you buy a PC without Windows ? Would you have that courage ?
That's a competitive price… I would buy one for that price.499€ is DOA
Same, though windows 11's bloat is an absolute shit show
They want some of the audience that's on consoles, even if they don't say so openly ,t hat's the fatal mistake; they should be honest and say they're competing with PlayStation. This discussion got me really questioning Valves strategy with this.
If it's supposed to be competitive with regular ass gaming PCs regardless of form factor, who the fuck is going to buy these specs in 2026? I feel like you could do a lot better for a few hundred more... maybe not. I don't keep up with prices.
But for my money, $600+ for a limp dick supplemental device? ...no way in hell man.
Yea if valve allows people to build a = or better one for the same or less I say they failedfixed that for you.
If you can build a better machine for less money then do it for yourself. I would wager though you already have a pc better than those specs IF you understand the complexities of building the pc already.
If that is the case this product isn't for you anyway so it's existence (and price point) generally shouldn't have any impact on you.
yeah but the 512gb version, over 499€ is DOA in 2026That's a competitive price… I would buy one for that price.
Nice should help quite a bit I should imagine. Was looking at something like that for PC but its way too big (fat) lol.Just bought this:

Why not? I am doing that whenever I can. Sometimes its not even an option and you get windows installed...no matter what. But its easy to just overwrite it than.Would you buy a PC without Windows ? Would you have that courage ?
Is not going to punch above the PS5/SX with those specs… sadly.I'll wait for Valve to announce the price. Also if it's around 500, then it's a decent deal. It's a little more powerful as regular PS5 and a little less than a Pro. At least if I can believe the calculations by some nerd on a Dutch newssite about tech and tweaking. And that is then based on Valve's claim that it's 6 times more powerful than the Deck. But yeah, I wouldn't know, it's just something I've read. Just threw the comment through ChatGPT to translate it to English. Didn't check for accuracy, because I'm lazy and it's bed time while I'm writing this. It's in the spoiler below, for it being quite a wall of text.
The GPU should deliver 6× the performance of a Steam Deck. A Steam Deck reaches ~1.638 FP32 TFLOPs with RDNA 2.0.
Six times 1.638 comes down to 9.828 TFLOPs. Of course, there are other RDNA 2.0 consoles on the market as well, such as the PS5 and Xbox Series. Since they all use the same architecture, you can compare TFLOPs (which comes down to (clock speed × shading units × 2) / 1,000,000) fairly accurately. Still, some games prefer more cores while others perform better with higher clock speeds.
- Xbox Series S: 4.01 TFLOPs
- Xbox Series X: 12.15 TFLOPs
- PS5: 10.29 TFLOPs
- PS5 Pro: 18.05 TFLOPs
- Steam Deck: 1.64 TFLOPs
- Steam Machine 2026: 6× Steam Deck
The hardware will use RDNA 3.0. Clock-for-clock, RDNA 3.0 performs roughly 8% better than RDNA 2.0. So if it really ends up being exactly 6× the GPU performance of a Steam Deck, that translates to about 18.2 TFLOPs RDNA 3.0 (9.1 × 2, because starting with RDNA 3.0 AMD uses the same trick as Nvidia where integer shaders can theoretically be used for floating-point operations).
We know the clock speed will be 2,450 MHz, so using the calculated (and taken with a healthy grain of salt) TFLOPs value, we can estimate how many shading units the system will have.
9.1 × 1,000,000 / 2 / 2450 = 1857. Of course, that's not a standard configuration. The closest common number is 1792. AMD always increases in steps of 256, so it will either be an RDNA 3.0 GPU with 1792 shading units or with 2048.
If it's 1792 units, that results in 17.56 TFLOPs (RDNA 3.0). If it's 2048, then it's 20.07 TFLOPs. At 20.07 TFLOPs, the RDNA 3.0 performance is roughly equivalent to the relative floating-point performance of an RX 7600M XT, GTX 1080 Ti, RTX 3060 12 GB, or Arc A770. At 17.56 TFLOPs, the performance is comparable to an RX 7600M, RX 6600, RTX 2060 Super, or Arc A560.
Nice should help quite a bit I should imagine. Was looking at something like that for PC but its way too big (fat) lol.
Also forgot to mention the cool Berserk wallpapers you have. I've got to get around reading the new chapters.
Being able to buy parts of a shelf to build a one off machine to meet your needs is not the same thing as a mass producing a product that is consumer ready/plug-n-play.Yea if valve allows people to build a = or better one for the same or less I say they failed
Ah, was hoping for a little win. Poor dude can't catch a break even after getting Casca back and things looking better, the Falcon always comes back and haunts him. You can tell its taking its toll not only physically but mentally as well. Our boy Guts going through a hard time. Then again, that's always been the story of Berserk.
I think consumers are getting more savvy. That was the status quo for a long time in gaming, but how many billions did we watch burn this year because of status quo thinking and planning? The market could not be any more different now. People are far more informed compared to the PS4 era. Tiktok gets a lot of flack but I think that type of content does some good in this way. Everyone is gonna be hit with reels and videos pointing out exactly what I said. And it's not very subjective or even grey. You're getting a LOT for your $200, and unless you're playing offline, it's just a loan. The entry point price is more important than that… Thats why console manufacturers subsidize some systems. And the reason that combustion engines cars still selling more than electric cars.
Games, incompatible programs... Windows isn't so bad, in fact it's necessary. That's why I insist on saying that the Steam Machine is a limited PC, I don't think even GPU upgrades are allowed.Courage? To use something other than Windows? What is there to be afraid of?

Sad that Kentaro Muia isn't alive to finish the story but his writers/mangaka artists are continuing to do gods work.
