We're one step closer to achieving the dream. PlayStation 5 will soon receive its first emulated PlayStation 3 game.

Buying the Cloudberry Kingdom package on the PlayStation Store gives you access to three downloadables: the native PS4 and PS5 apps, alongside the Cloudberry Kingdom: PlayStation 3 Edition. This is also a PS5 app, running the RedoEngine emulator. Loading up this version, you're presented with a very Sony-like joypad explainer, detailing how the Dual Shock 3 controls map onto today's Dual Sense controller.

Pausing the game also exhibits different behaviour between the PS5 native and PS3 emulated versions: on the latter, there is support for save states, for example. From thereon out, the game presents very similarly to the PS5 version, just running at a lower resolution (1080p, in line with the original, 4K on PS5) - and with a few minor issues that will be addressed in an upcoming patch.

This is clearly not a very technically demanding game. Even so, it is a good start, and could hopefully open the door toward getting more PS3 games brought to users of current systems.

I was playing PS3 games years before PC gamers could emulate them. Even cooler.
True. Just when I was playing PC stuff which PS3 could not handle. Neither could its successor.

Even Microsoft have been more adequate with their backwards compatibility. Which is saying a lot.

I have no idea why the possibility of a PS3 emulator triggered you so much you had to immediately come in and shitpost.

Who says I'm triggered? Or are you just projecting?

I simply can't help but laugh at Sony gaslighting their audience how this was impossible, just for them to be humiliated by devs who are not affiliated with Sony in any way, while still doing a much better job than they ever did. At least now with them backpedaling on their "PS5 can not into PS3 games" narrative, they can finally have some good first-party stuff on the platform.

You were right, I was totally projecting. You seem like a well-adjusted individual that doesn't carry any deep grudges. Carry on.

Sure. If by "deep grudge" you mean simply refusing to lick Sony's boots or easily forgive their shenanigans as, ahem.... certain fanboys do. But you do you.

Meh, reckon it ends up acting like the nintendo "expansion packs" services in future. Super selective lists of games that they can only feel good about or not be embarrassed by.

I still fire it up once in a while. It's pretty cool, I personally always prefer original hardware over emulation if I can.

not when it's the PS3. nothing about that system makes me want to use it.

one of the worst first party controllers of the last 30 years. patching games is a nightmare. load times are slow.

nah. mine is only ever turned on when it's the only option.

This would be such a win, after years I can finally retire my PS3 Slim+Super Slims, move all my games to the PS5 and finish all the Plats I'm missing, the fact that next year PS3 as a platform is going to be 20 years of active duty is an achievement in itself...

He clearly wasn't triggered and I don't disagree. It's utterly nonsensical that to this day, most PS3 games aren't playable on Sony's newer consoles and all we got is a game no one played as Sony finally decided to throw us a bone.

It's nothing to cheer for. It's pathetic. PS3 games should have been made playable ages ago, but Sony doesn't care.

It's something many people have been asking for years and when there's a possibility it's actually coming, we just whine and write it off because it didn't arrive earlier? I personally don't get this kind of thinking. When Half Life 3 comes 15 years too late do we boo Gabe off the stage or are we actually happy it's happening regardless? Yeah Sony could and should have done a lot better with BC, but in the end it is what it is and people will be happy assuming it's actually a thing, even arriving late.

Unless you own all the gaming devices people are gonna miss out on some gems.

During those days PC gamers missed out on games like Uncharted 1-3, TLOU, Gears, Halo 3, Lost Odessy, God of War 3, Red Dead Redemption, MGS4, Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Demons Souls and so on. And Im sure console gamers missed out on some great games too, but I wouldnt brag about anything if you missed out on playing games I listed

I don't think anyone whined or wrote it off. The post was more like a, yeah, we can already do this on PC, get it together, Sony, and they should get it together.

But I was told this was completely impossible

Evidently, it's not "completely impossible", and most reasonable people never thought it was. The difficulty would be in producing a comprehensive emulator that would enable someone to toss in any arbitrary disc and have the game run flawlessly.

There was a good article a few week's ago that discussed the obstacles (both technical and legal) in getting older generation games onto newer systems in an official capacity. It's easy for the peanut gallery here to dismiss this by saying "we could do this on PC for years" while they diddle around with drivers and configuration files. Making a foolproof product for the mass market that doesn't require an army of technical support is a horse of a different color.

It seems nobody actually wrote the article.

This emulation effort is not led by Sony but by a third party, RedoApps, that's making their own PS1, PS2 and PS3 emulators. They're not releasing an emulator app, it's a custom emulation solution for publishers that want to sell their PS3 games on PS5 and it needs to be custom tailored for each port. At the moment this emulator only runs 10 PS3 games. RedoApps hopes to release more PS3 indie games though (but that of course depends on making deals with every single publisher/developer in order to obtain distribution rights).

Continuing to map Start and Select to the touchpad should result in a prison sentence for the emulation team.

I'm fine with these button mappings. They're clearly following the precedent set by Implicit Conversions with their PS1/PS2 games on PS4/PS5. This is good for consistency.

If Sony is wise, Ps3 emulated for Ps5, will be a big win for Ps5. Example, MGS4 emulated for Ps5 will be fantastic.

That's a tall order at the moment. Meanwhile, it's good to see the effort being applied to smaller games for now. Developers will gradually improve their techniques, which will enable them to eventually tackle the larger and more technically demanding games.
