Monitoring the situation in Iran

So once the middle east is destroyed, US will stop giving Israel upwards of 3.3billion per year right.

They have certainly afford the cost of free college and universal healthcare on their own.

Maybe we can get the free college and healthcare with the $3+ billion per year savings.

Ww2 would happen regardless of Chamberlain though. The seeds of WW2 were planted with the treaty of Versailles.
Theres plenty of reasons why WW2 happened.

Im just saying that user telling the other user they are wrong because "because Austrian painter was elected" shows a fundamental misunderstanding of world events and shows the cartoonish history being taught to people.

There's loads of dictators before and after Hitler. There was absolutely more factors involved in the world war breaking out in such a scale besides him purely being a dictator.

Don't you mean to say you could give the Epstein class $10 billion a year in reduced tax and raise the US deficit by $7 billion?

Nothing that is happening can have any of my support. And I hope my government comes forward and state the same.
Edit:
How on earth can be acceptable bombs falling in the middle of the streets blowing up cars and killing bystanders? No, "Iran has a terrorist regine" is not enough of excuse to justify this.
Bombs killing 150 children on a school and not even an apology? Not acceptable. No, "it was near a military base" doesn't cut it as an excuse either.

millions of deaths for the most nonsensical of things like being gay or being a woman in the wrong place.

you do you but I very much disagree with you. It has to end.

Agreed.

if people actually paid attention to history we wouldn't be in this mess right now.

Iranian law mandates strict gender-based discrimination under a framework influenced by Sharia law, enforcing compulsory hijab, requiring male guardian permission for travel/work, and granting women unequal rights in marriage, divorce, and inheritance
. Women face significant legal restrictions on employment, personal freedoms, and protection from violence.

Key Legal Restrictions for Women in Iran
  • Mandatory Hijab: Women are legally required to wear a hijab in public. Violations result in fines, potential arrests, and the use of technology like facial recognition, Wikipedia.
  • Marriage and Divorce:The legal marriage age for girls is 13, though younger with permission
. Women generally cannot divorce easily, while men have unilateral rights.
    • Guardianship and Travel: Married women often need permission from husbands for passports and travel.
    • Legal Testimony and Inheritance: In many cases, a woman's testimony is worth half that of a man's, and daughters inherit half the share of sons.
    • Employment: Husbands can legally prevent wives from working if the job is deemed incompatible with family interests.
    • Violence Against Women: There are no specific laws criminalizing domestic violence or sexual harassment.

Reza and Mahsa Travellers
is a YouTube channel featuring a husband-and-wife duo that documents daily life, travel, and food across Iran.
While they present themselves as independent travel vloggers, their content is frequently categorized as soft-power propaganda by critics due to several factors:
  • Counter-Narrative Focus: Their videos often feature titles like "The Reality Western Media Won't Show" and "You Won't Believe This Is Iran," which align with state-promoted efforts to project an image of normalcy, modernity, and stability.
  • Avoidance of Politics: The content strictly avoids sensitive topics such as government crackdowns, internet censorship, or compulsory hijab laws.
  • Operational Freedom: Critics point out that YouTube is officially blocked in Iran. High-quality, consistent uploading of pro-government-style content often requires VPN access or state tolerance that is rarely extended to critical independent creators.
  • Production Style: Their videos focus on historical landmarks (Persepolis, Vakil Mosque), modern cityscapes in Tehran, and street food, emphasizing the country's beauty and hospitality while ignoring its internal conflicts.

Actual Iran, 1 month ago:

Estimates of the number killed vary substantially, hampered by the ongoing internet shutdown. The Iranian government has acknowledged more than 3,000 dead, and the US-based organisation HRANA (Human Rights Activists News Agency), whose figures have been reliable during previous crackdowns, says it has verified more than 6,000 dead and has more than 17,000 more recorded deaths under investigation, giving a possible total of about 22,000. Other estimates from doctors based outside Iran range up to 33,000 or more.

Quietly, Ahmadi [who remains anonymous due to fear of reprisals, but whose identity, credentials and presence within Iran during the unrest have been verified by the Guardian] and his wife began treating patients at a location outside Iran's government hospital system. Alerted by a local whisper network, wounded young people flocked to them. Mostly, they brought superficial injuries – laceration wounds needing stitches and antibiotics. As Thursday evening wore on, more and more arrived to be patched up.

The next day, everything abruptly changed. Protesters kept coming, but their injuries were close-range gunshots and severe stab wounds, typically to the chest, eyes and genitals. Many proved fatal.

Ahmadi was shocked by the number being killed – more than 40 in his small town alone – but with the internet blacked out, no one knew what the national picture was. To piece it together, Ahmadi assembled a network of more than 80 medical professionals across 12 of Iran's 31 provinces to share observations and data, and to build a clearer picture of the violence.

They've mass murdered people. No one can imagine … I saw just blood, blood and blood

Ah yeah the classic "my uncle works at Nintendo" kind of argument. It's their law. You don't have to understand it, like it, or approve it. I'm very critical of Islam both in real life, and historically here on this forum. I think it has no place in the West and that these two cultures should never mix. But that doesn't give Israel and their puppet US, an excuse to stir shit up in the Middle East every other year, causing far more suffering than whatever anti-gay law exists there. Enough is enough.

It's a tragedy, regardless of how many people were actually killed. Try storming the White House to overthrow Trump's administration and see how it would end up for you.

took you long enough. doesn't matter who I know .. the facts are out there.

now go back and read the rest of my post there are strict laws against YouTube in Iran that the channel that was posted oddly doesn't have to abide by. I wonder why...

Times like this I wish we bought an electric car. Tesla and BYD must be loving all this.
It really does feel like the end of days are near, flying, trains, transport. The cost of living as already crazy. Petrol outside of America are way worse.
Thanks America.

Anyone who thinks this is about freedom for the people in Iran, your absolutely crazy. Same old war for the same old reason, Oil. Oil America doesn't even need, but guess who does? their enemies.

Oil and Chips. Someone needs to figure out cold fusion and make more foundries.

I bought an EV in June 25 just cause I loved the car. Didn't expect to see it benefitting me in other ways.

I do have a secondary Jeep Compass which uses gas. I don't use it much but I guess I should get its tank filled soon since our government hasnt yet increased the prices.

I don't know who to believe… my own lying eyes, that can see hundreds of YouTube videos showing what the streets of Iran actually look like… or your attempt at amplifying propaganda by showing an image of two women from God knows where wearing full burkas.

Such a difficult dilemma. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Yeah, let's go with the burka image and fuck them savages. Let's bomb them to pieces like Lindsey Graham says, blow up their oil depots next to the capital, and cover the sky and water with chemicals that will cause tens of thousands more early deaths from cancer and other diseases. This will win their heart and souls and will stop calling US the great devil. I'm sure of it.

Fucking idiots.

It's a tragedy, regardless of how many people were actually killed. Try storming the White House to overthrow Trump's administration and see how it would end up for you.

Read the article because if you equate the Iran protest in university towns and many other regions to "storming the White House", you're a complete fucking moron further proven by Jan 6th was a "storming" of the capitol building and had a small number of fatalities.

Read the article because if you equate the Iran protest in university towns and many other regions to "storming the White House", you're a complete fucking moron further proven by Jan 6th was a "storming" of the capitol building and had a small number of fatalities.

If you're calling the January 6th "storming of the Capitol" that, you are a complete moron. Oh, hold on, you're not, since you put "storming" in quotation marks, so what's your point?

Whatever happens internally in Iran is their business, and it doesn't give "Israel" or the US the right to bomb the country to pieces. There are countless brutal regimes, far more brutal than the worst reports coming from Iran, and not a peep from Americans. Why's that? Ask yourself. Maybe there's some other agenda than "liberating the people."

I wonder what false guarantees the foreign intelligence agencies at play gave to the poor Iranians who thought they could 'overthrow' their government. That shit wouldn't fly anywhere in the world. Would the US accept protesters gearing up to overthrow the government? Like, seriously preparing to do it? Of course not, they would be hunted and charged with domestic terrorism. We have exactly the same rules here, just different punishments. I don't agree with any of it, and I don't want to repeat myself that I'm critical of Islam and their laws, but fucking hell, just leave them alone and maybe we can live in peace.

The US is shocked that they are called the great devil. Like, did you ask yourself why Canada, for example, is not called that, and why not a single country in the Middle East has a problem with them? Stop supporting Israel, stop bombing their homelands, and maybe we can have some peace.

Nothing that is happening can have any of my support. And I hope my government comes forward and state the same.

The entire city of Tehran, 10m+ civilians, is currently under a black cloud of toxic, poisonous, oil-ridden "black rain" after Israel bombed their oil depots there. Millions of innocent people will be suffering or dying because of this.

There is literally no excuse. Evil.

Yeah, the civilians are feeling the worst of it.

She said: "The situation is so frightening it's hard to describe. Smoke has covered the entire city. I have severe shortness of breath and burning in my eyes and throat, and many others feel the same. But people still have to go outside because they have no choice. Many places reopened today, but closed again because it's impossible to stay outdoors."
Negin, who went out to buy a mask and an inhaler, said: "Even masks are becoming difficult to find. This is a huge mistake. I ask those who have the ability, especially foreign media, to reflect on this situation. What are people supposed to do under these conditions? This is truly a crime against humanity."
Speaking about the effects on people of the US-Israeli strikes continuing around her she said, "This is no longer just a human rights violation. It is truly anti-human behaviour. If someone has a problem with the Islamic Republic government, that is one thing – but not with us, the people. You cannot attack water systems or refineries. Most of Tehran's water comes from dams. If those become polluted, what happens then? The government has basically left people on their own."
She said: "Prices are skyrocketing. I bought an inhaler for 850,000 tomans [£4.50]. Where are people supposed to get this money? Many people in Tehran are daily workers who haven't had work for a long time. Food is becoming extremely expensive, and many things are becoming scarce."
For Negin, who decided to stay in the city, there was a feeling of helplessness. "The pressure inside the country is becoming enormous. There are shortages of basic goods. There was no gasoline anywhere. Today in many places they are giving people only five litres of fuel. The situation is extremely painful."
Mehdi – speaking under an alias – is a 42-year-old restaurant owner who lives in the west of the city. He said the fear of inhaling the toxic gas and touching anything is similar to how it felt during Covid. "We are so scared to even clean the windows and balconies. There's soot everywhere and we don't even want to touch it with gloves. My eyes are burning and I look outside and see people without masks are going on with their daily lives. I am not so brave. There's this smell in the air I can't explain."

Mehdi said he also planned to leave the city and that it would be hazardous to serve people food in his restaurant until he knew the water was safe. "Trust me, we are on our own. This regime doesn't care about us so why would I make a plea to a foreign power to care for us? And tell those saying we asked for this. No! We didn't ask for the death of our people who were getting killed by the regime anyway. And if you haven't cared when they gunned us down, zip your mouth now. We [Tehranis] are here to help each other even if this government doesn't."

Gas in my neighborhood has gone up about 50 cents per gallon, if not more in the last few weeks. No exaggeration, early February it was like 3.11 and currently it's hovering around 3.70.

Those midterms are going to be a bloodbath.

This time last week (near my house): $2.35/gal (Regular)
This morning: $3.29/gal

Bloodbath will be an understatement if these prices get worse. If they keep going up, I'm seriously concerned I'll have issues with my commute into work because I'm poor.

Yeah, the civilians are feeling the worst of it.

Winning hearts and minds, liberating the people.

No one in their right mind liked the Iranian regime or what was going on there. Unfortunately, it's not clear, at this point, that the actions currently being taken will help. It's also extremely possible that it will simply make things worse, for the people inside Iran, and for the rest of the world.

It's similar to immigration. People want it under control. That's great. But if you put incompetent people in charge of the operation, incompetent things will happen. Hegseth is the Kristi Noem of war.

Those midterms are going to be a bloodbath.
You sure there will be midterms?

There will be. Whether they want there to be or not.

I remember when this happened in 2004. Sick demons.

Atefah Rajabi Sahaaleh was a 16-year-old Iranian girl from Neka, Mazandaran Province, executed on August 15, 2004, for charges of adultery and "crimes against chastity" under Iran's Islamic penal code.

She was arrested multiple times for similar charges, beginning at age 13, after being discovered in a car with a boy. Following a police raid, she was jailed and sentenced to 100 lashes. While in prison, she alleged she was tortured and raped by guards. Her father later stated she was forced to care for her elderly grandparents after her mother died in a car crash and her father became an addict.

In 2003, she was arrested again and accused of adultery after being raped by Ali Darabi, a 51-year-old married former revolutionary guard. During her trial, she confessed under duress and revealed the abuse. When the judge, Haji Rezai, ignored her claims and sentenced her to death, she removed her hijab and threw her shoes at him in protest. The Supreme Court upheld the sentence, despite her actual age being 16—confirmed by her birth certificate and death certificate—while officials claimed she was 22.

Her execution drew international condemnation. Amnesty International declared it a crime against humanity, and the case became a symbol of Iran's failure to uphold its obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). In the aftermath, Iranian media reported that Judge Rezai and several militia members were arrested, and the Supreme Court posthumously pardoned her.

Documentaries by the BBC and Discovery Times highlighted her story, and her case remains a key example of systemic injustice and the dangers faced by minors in Iran's judicial system. Her grave was reportedly disturbed, and her body has not been found.

In terms of immediate domestic political concerns, obviously the smart thing to do would be to do nothing and let future America worry about the consequences of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.

I have both electric (ID4) and gas (Jetta) cars. I just filled my Jetta up this weekend. Looks like I know which car I'll be using more though.

I've been contemplating getting rid of owning gas cars altogether. I've held onto the Jetta because it's a car I bought in 2014 new and has held strong, it'd cost more to replace it than the amount I pay in gas. However, this summer we'll be in a situation to just go down to one car and my wife keeps pushing that since she'll no longer have to drive our kids to school (their new schools next school year are in walking distance, and we have transit access) so that's how it may end up going down if she has her way.

There are hundreds of "Walking in Tehran" or "Walking tour Iran 4K" videos that have random Iranian youtubers filming street scenes in Tehran that show girls/women wearing modern clothing and often not wearing head scarves. The sheer number of them makes it clear they're not staged or anything by the Iranian government. The image that Iran is another Afghanistan where all women are covered up from head to toe and are treated like cattle is simply false.

Another thing, I had no idea that there were still Christian in Iran. There's an Armenian part of Tehran where they celebrate Christmas and where shops show christmas trees and Santa Claus figures. That was surprising.

But the idea that these videos are representative for all Iran is not true either. What those "walking in Tehran" usually show are street scenes from well-to-do parts of Tehran with luxury shopping centers that are visited by the Iran middle and upper class who are not harassed by the morality police. Things are different outside of the big cities and the country side where you'll see many, many, many more women dressed in black.

By the way, this PBS documentary by Dutch journalist Thomas Erdbrink about life in Iran is a must-see if you want to learn about the dichotomy between the life of modern Iranians and the religious maniacs who rule the country. Erdbrink is married to an Iranian artist, speaks the language and has lived in Iran many years. He worked as a journalist in Iran for years until Iranian authorities revoked Erdbrink's press credentials in late February 2019. Our Man in Tehran was filmed in 2015.

I've only been to Iran (Tehran) once, in the mid 2010's, granted it's been a long ass while since then but my experience was that it was like a diet-Sharjah experience, nowhere close to Dubai but certainly not an Afghan style situation either.

But again, this was a decade~ ago.

Ah yes, but that same President needs to look beyond the attack and look at what the aftermath and day after will be/look like. Have a strategy for the day after.

More importantly, seek the approval of the governed before taking such an action which is OPPOSITE of what he campaigned/elected on.

No??

How about the bare minimum.. Go 24hrs without contradicting themselves on what this is, what the goal is or why we are in it.

Maybe Iran is similar to North Korea. The capital city being much nicer than the rest of the country for the wealthier/higher class locals and tourists.

you do you but I very much disagree with you. It has to end.
So, you think that this makes it ok to bomb children and throwing bombs at the streets? Ok. I'm wondering how would you feel if bombs started to fall in manhattan.
Besides go read some history. The sha government was no democracy either. It wasn't all roses either.
Edit: and we all know that neither israel or trump gives too fucks about that.

I think you are mistaking Iran with Saudi Arabia. Speaking of "millions of deaths for the most nonsensical of things like being gay or being a woman in the wrong place." - we are bombing Saudi Arabia when? Asking for a friend:

As no faith other than Islam is permitted to be practiced openly, no churches, synagogues, temples, gurudwaras, shrines, kingdom halls, or other non-Muslim houses of worship are permitted in the country although there were nearly three million Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs in 2022.

Oh, let's not forget the modern day slavery of migrant workers.

Here's 1990s video of Tehran:

Sure, not what it was before the revolution but still not what you posted.
