Is there a good XBMC remote app for e iPad? I want to be able to browse my movies, music and series on the iPad and then let them play on my TV. I'm not looking for any AirPlay stuff, the media is stored on my server and XBMC would be installed on my HTPC, so it's really just a remote app with a catalog feature. I'm currently using the MyMovies plugin for the WMC, but their freemium model can get really expensive, so I'm thinking about switching to XBMC, but not without a similar app.

Quoting myself, in case anyone else is interested.

XBMC Commander.

It's amazing.

Hi Guys,

My brother needs to some DVD's ripping onto his Ipad 2 for holiday tomorrow.
At the moment we are trying to use handbrake, but for some of the dvd's it's not recognising the actual film, or if it does it takes 10 mins to read the disc then decides its going to take about 4 1/2 hours to rip it.

Is there another bit of free software that will do it quicker???

Thanks

what is the best streaming app for ipad 2.

i want to be able to stream my movies and shows from my pc to my ipad.

free app would be awesome

Air Video does that well, and there's a free "lite" version if you just want to try it out before deciding to buy the full version.

Nope. Handbrake is the go-to app. There is a problem elsewhere. Either the DVD's you are trying have horrible DRM or your drive is not all that good. There is nothing wrong with Handbrake. It's mainly a wrapper for FFMPEG and other codecs used to rip and transcode video.

If it's taking 4.5 hours, there is something wrong with the disc or drive. (Or you're on a PowerPC)

What DVD's are they?

I recommend using software to rip the DVD from the disc first before transcoding with Handbrake. Sadly MacTheRipper no longer works on Lion, and its upgrade that WOULD work has been hidden away behind a locked website with a sign that says "YOU PAY US NOW OR GET THE FUCK OUT" in big red metaphorical letters, so I recommend looking into MacDVDRipperPro. It costs money, but it's much easier to rip a DVD with Handbrake when it's transcoding it from an ISO. But they're not required as Handbrake can transcode directly from a DVD drive with no problem.

thanks guys i tried the free version and was suprised how it supported almost all my file type's

bought the full version for 2 something, so happy with the purchase.

thanks!!

I used Airvideo for awhile. Then Streamtome came along. Its airvideo which also has a mac client, airplay backgrounding, and streams my itunes and iphoto libraries as well.

l got my son an iPad 2 for Christmas, can someone just remind me how to set up imessage. l just need to set him up with an email address and make him an Apple id right?
32gb wifi btw.

What's a good screen protector? I was about to get an InvisibleShield, but the reviews don't look that great.

Don't get InvisibleShield, the plastic is too thick and the texture is all wrong. Your fingers won't glide across the screen like normal.

I got an unbranded pack of 5 screen protectors for £5 of amazon, and they do the job perferctly.

It can't be just me who can never scroll down or up on the Facebook app right? It works about 5% of the time. Frustrating, because the iPhone version works fine.

Getting an ipad for christmas - best case if I want one of those ipad smart cover types? Do I need to buy the official one, or are there cheaper alternatives that do the same thing?

None. Have had the iPad 2 since day 1. No "protector", no issues. Your buying into a huge scam, IMO. Just get a smart cover and you'll be good to go.

depends if you're going to be toting the ipad around with you often, or just leaving it at home. i prefer having a folio case like this since it protects both front and back, has the magnetic cover to unlock the device, and functions as a stand.

i've had the above case for 8 months or so and have no complaints. it's also inconspicuous enough that i feel comfortable taking out my device and using it on the commute to and from work.

Power Support Crystal is considered the absolute best, you can't even tell there's anything on the screen.

And there are situations where it's a good idea to have a screen protector. I have peace of mind when tossing my iPad to the kids or guests and let them hack away at stuff like Angry Birds.

UK-GAF, help!

The iPlayer app is no longer allowing me to change the video quality (the little HQ button that's normally in the bottom right of the screen isn't there anymore), and so I'm stuck on low quality broadcasts. I'm baffled. As I understand it, the app itself determines the quality of the video feed based on your Internet speed. It always used to default to high quality, as I've got a 10Mb/s connection.

I did watch some stuff on the iPad whilst I was visiting my parents last week, and since they're stuck with 2Mb/s Internet I had to settle for the lower quality option. It sort of seems as though the app's got stuck in that mindset, and won't register the fact that it has access to a fast connection again now. I've deleted and reinstalled, but to no avail.

Any advice?

I'm sure this has been answered a million times, but what's the easiest way to transfer photos from my iPhone to iPad with no compression (and without the kit)?

Is that "HQ" button specific to the iPad app? Just checked on my iPhone (I only installed it a few days ago) and I don't see that button either.

Lately I've been having some wifi connection problems with my iPad 2. It's a launch unit, 32 GB, wifi only.
It will suddenly and randomly say that I need to connect to a wifi network (there's a pop-up saying what networks are available). I will choose the network and it will keep on working for a while, only to be disconnected again after a while.

I've had this happen in two different networks, using two different routers, with which this had never happened before.
Has anyone had a similar case?
I'd go to the Apple store, but I'm afraid they won't help if I cannot reproduce what happens in the store.
As it is now, it can work ok for hours, only to start acting weird suddenly.

Does this happen on the one wifi network, or multiple/all of them? I only ask because I had this on my parents wifi, and replacing their router (with something less shitty) eradicated the problem completely.

At least in two different networks, and with two different routers.
What puzzles me is that it started happening from one day to the other. I mean, I've had the iPad since March and have been using at home without one single problem for months.
The other router is at my in laws place, and have used the iPad quite a bit there, also with no problems at all.

Crap, I'm thinking of buying the cheapest iPad 2 today, even when I have held out for so long and the iPad 3 is probably coming to Europe in 4 months.

Primarily because it's lighter, thinner and I can use it for Mirroring AirPlay with my new Apple TV. Which means Skype video chatting on the tv.

I've heard Feb mentioned recently. Resist! I'll only regret waiting if the new iPad doesn't have a "retina" display.

Hey I know I already posted this in the gaming thread but wanted to sharer with everyone here.

I just got my favorite new app and its for my cats. Its actually a game made for cats with a little mouse that you have to hit as he runs around. My kittens played with the thing all day yesterday. They just sit around it watching him run and try to grab him. it's hilarious and adorable.

I took a video to share with everyone, check it out if you love kittens and the iPad2.

Wow, no worries about their claws?

Nach, cat claws aren't always out, and I don't hear em they seem to just be using the pads of their little feet. Don't hear any tapping either, plus the iPad is kinda hard to scratch. I don't think their little nails are gonna do it.

:lol

....my cats will never touch my iPad. I just don't trust them to keep their claws in.

Anyway, got a $50 iTunes gift card for Christmas, and I can't think of anything to buy. We already bought most of the apps and games we wanted. Going to buy the full version of Words with Friends so my wife doesn't have to look at an ad after every move. I'm probably going to buy the StarWalk app. I don't do much gaming on the iPad (played Infinity Blade for about 15min total) either. So, uh, I'm stuggling to think of things to buy on iTunes :|

Espgaluda II HD!

Actually if you don't do much gaming maybe look into productivity stuff? Those tend to be higher priced so if you've ever thought about messing with them you might as well use the Christmas money. I've wasted a decent amount on some music apps I don't have the talent for...but hey they're fun to screw around with if nothing else.

Before buying my first iPhone a few years ago, I had no interest in Apple products. I thought they were for designers and trendsetters and were overpriced.

When the first iPad was released, I was one of those idiots who said 'LOL it's a big iphone? I don't need that..'

The biggest reason I finally bought an iPad 2 was for the iOs gaming scene. The threads on here were a big motivator too.

Since buying it a few months ago it's replaced my consoles (except for when uncharted 3 and Saints Row 3 came out), my laptop and even my work PC for a lot of tasks. This thing is brilliant!

I sketch and animate on it, create music (garage band is godly), play games, do assignments, surf the web, bet on sports and now after reading through the last few pages I'm going to start converting DVDs to play on it.

I travel a lot and just spent 10 days in the far North East of Thailand in a very poor farming community. The people there were gobsmacked by the iPad because they only have access to a PC at the local store and then only use it when they have a spare 50c or so to rent it for an hour. I got a great pic that I will upload showing one of the local kids expression when he saw Modern Combat 3 on the iPad. It's basically the :O face

I love how light it is and easy to take anywhere. I just close the smart cover and throw it in my satchel. I got a screen protector but mainly to cut the glare when I'm out and about.

Thanks. What kind of productivity apps are you referring to? Any specific suggestions?

I don't use my iPad for work, at all. It's just a web browsing / email / iOS game machine for at home

Have a 16GB iPad, and recently got a big chunk of 'other' when I synced some rentals. I have no idea what is taking up the space. Tried a few 'fixes' (cleaning cache, reset settings etc) but nothing. Any other known fixes I could try before I do a full reset?

Other = 2.5GB btw

I need help.

Ok, so I redeemed a digital copy of Winnie the Pooh on my PC via iTunes, it copied fine and is sitting in the Movies part of my iTunes library. How do I get it on my iPad?

Damn, I know this should be simple, but I can't figure it out...

connect your ipad to your computer.

select the ipad in the left side source list in iTunes. then go the main ipad info window and select movies tab.

select the check to sync movies and pick the ones you want.

click sync at the bottom of the screen. done

Posted this in the Canadian Gaming Deals thread, but I thought I'd share it here, as well.

Future Shop and Best Buy have the 16GB iPad 2 for $498.99.

If you go the Future Shop route, you could trade in Uncharted 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and Skyrim, and get $150 towards the 16GB iPad 2.

So, that's $498.99 + tax (13% in Ontario) = $563.86 - $150 = $413.86.

The two offers (trade-in value for games and 16GB iPad 2 sale) ends on Saturday, December 24th.

I would absolutely take advantage of this, but I already traded in Skyrim and MW3, and my copy of Uncharted 3 from my PS3 bundle is going to be a gift for someone.
