Giant Bomb's Game of the Year Thread: Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skylanders!

Yeah, you have to go in understanding the tastes of the guys and what they have played. As someone who plays a lot of JRPG's it can be very frustrating, but it is what it is.
Yup, JRPGs and portables are rarely discussed since most of them don't play them.

Anything interesting go on down on the podcast? Also can I get a full list of categories?

The personal lists so far have been quite dull and I expect that to be a trend. Though Tropico 4 being that crazy dude's top 1 game is pretty funny.

I've been putting a solid 2 hours into Tropico 4 every night for the past four nights, man. On some level I know it's just Tropico 3 with more options and prettier, but I don't care. I fucking loved Tropico 3.

There's nothing to spoil in SotD.
The ending story moment was actually really cool. Also even if a game doesn't have a great story (99% of all games fall into this category) you can still spoil a game sequence that otherwise would have been a great (unexpected) moment.

Skipped their Cutter talk yesterday. Going to finish up on Uncharted 3 today, just to be on the safe side.

Meh Bastion was really well done and I thoroughly enjoyed it, but aside from Zia's song, none of it was exceptionally memorable to me.

Or maybe it wasn't one of his top ten games of the year.

If he only got 2 achievements then he didn't make it very far and if you're going to claim to have some authority on games and reviewing games then you should play one of the biggest games of the year longer than a couple of hours.

Maybe he did for all I know. I'm just going off of the achievements because you can get 2 within a couple hours and Skyrim is obviously much longer than that.

Unfortunately, it will be Skyrim.

Its a good game, held my interest longer than Oblivion.

But its dreadfully bland at times. Among other things. Excited to see what they do for DLC though.

Say what you want about Ryan, he completes the games he enjoys. Had he enjoyed Skyrim enough for it to potentially be in his top ten list, I have no doubt he would have pushed on, knowing full well that it was going to be a finalist for GOTY.

No Deus Ex talk for best soundtrack makes me sad, and the dismissal of Cave Johnson makes it sound like they honestly don't know what a "character" actually is.

Will always be bewildered at the level of love Human Revolution's soundtrack gets. In any case, I don't think the GiantBomb dudes pay enough attention to videogame music for it to matter.

You can get a good understanding of Skyrim with a handful of hours. It is not like the game grows in intensity once you unlock dragons and shouts(the reverse could be said to be true, things get broken and easier). However it is likely to steal more than that anyway, so it would have to be planned for optimizing your time. It has a very plodding pace.

Ryan didn't finish Skyrim and Brad didn't finish SR3. Major debate incoming?
Barring something drastic happening, the final debate has crystallized pretty clearly. It will be Jeff and Ryan for SR3 against Patrick and Brad for Skyrim, with Vinny leaning towards Skyrim.

The part where they all sang was hilarious.
Yeah I was singing along too, I never realized how catchy the e-Shop music actually is.

On a personal note I'm continually amazed at how delighted people are with Wheatley. I found him obnoxious throughout the entire game.

Can't wait to hear Ryan and Brad hear about the endings to those games and see how it sways them.

It took me a good couple of minutes for me to realise that the main quest for Skyrim had ended. Such an anti-climax. SR3 on the other hand had me laughing all the way to the end.

Ryan only played the first hour or two of Skyrim before his 360 locked up I believe. So though "did not finish" is technically accurate, in Skyrim's case you might as well say "did not play". I hope Brad filibusters the hell out of this one. I really don't care for Saints Row at all.

I've only played Skyrim for like 10 hours, but honestly it feels so far like you can get a pretty good idea of the game from those first couple of hours.

Thanks for even acknowledging Rayman Origins in both Music and Ryan's top 10. Game is very deserving.
This and Deus Ex are my two "damn I wish I had time to play these in 2011" picks.

I played the Rayman Origins demo over the weekend and now I REALLY need to play that game. Unfortunately my backlog status level is "critical." Should have taken this week off...

He gave it 5 stars :)

You know I bought the game on his hype alone. I was always interested in it, but his carrying on over a couple of podcasts tipped me over the edge.

This is why I'm a bit hesitant to pick up Saints Row 3! (despite liking the series to a degree)

Honestly, they seem to have lost a bit of interest in Skyrim since the weeks after launch but hey are still gushing over SR 3. I think SR3 will take it. I think the game of the year discussion will come down to portal 2, Bastion, Skyrim and SR3, and those championing SR3 will have an easier time convincing the opposition.

Even so that's not professional for a reviewer to do that.

But since it was apparently his console locking up then that's another story.

SR3 is seriously worth checking out. I bought it based on their QL and TNT. NO REGRETS. Fun game and funny as well. Awesome music too.

The first ten hours, sure. The hours before you get to Whiterun and kill your first dragon? Definitely not. Besides, the true strength of Skyrim lies some of its more creative side quests later on.

I don't think 10 hours is a sufficient amount of time to gauge everything Skyrim has to offer.

Cool, well I guess I can blame Giant Bomb AND YOU if/when I pick it up next week!

SR3 is practically made for Jeff and Ryan.

I don't have high hopes for Skyrim with both of them on the same side and I think Patrick can be easily persuaded to join them. Vinny might just get tired and give up. Brad is the biggest hurdle for them, but I don't think it's going to be enough.

Dead Island beating Witcher 2 is pretty sad. I don't agree with Dave's reasoning at all.

Deus Ex: HR not being mentioned in the music section is a huge oversight. I don't expect DE to get much love in general, though.

The category comes down to one man's opinion. It's just a silly category with weird "rules".

Of course, but I don't like the fact Dave thought Witcher 2 wasn't an "Eastern Bloc" game in spirit and that it was too polished.

I dunno, it's not a big deal and I get that it's a bit of a joke category, but I feel Witcher 2 isn't going to win many (if any) categories so this was his chance to recognise it as a fantastic game.

This makes me sad. :(

DE and Witcher 2 are both up there as my best experiences this year but I expect them to be completely passed by.
