Apple iPad 2 |OT|

I have the iPad2, but I really would like extra capacity (preferably 16GB to 32GB to store more music) and retina display for my Zinio subs.

*dances nervously*

Don't know what to do!

I sold mine, only lost like 50 bucks in total. People are buying them like crazy, got like 30 serious offers the first 24h.

The WiFi doesn't have GPS? I never knew that.

That settles it, 3G it is. But please Apple, don't announce anything until my auction ends on Sunday!

I ended up losing $100 on my 64GB. I'm going 32GB for the iPad 3, though. 64GB was actually more than I needed, plus the 32GB will probably have a relative higher resale value.

Crap, found two rather deep scratches which I can only see in sunlight, on my iPad 2.
Guess I'll just keep it and go buy an iPad 3 around Christmas again or wait for the iPad 4.
I'm still excited to see what Apple brings though. :)

No way the ipad 3 will only have 512MB of ram.
Safari is severely struggling on the ipad 2 as soon as you open 3 or 4 tabs, it constantly has to reload them, and it crashes very often on heavy sites.
1 GB or bust.

Sorry if it's a silly question, but what happens with an ebay auction if it ends with a price much lower than the one you'd like to sell the item for?

I also want to sell my iPad 2, but I'm hesitant to doing through eBay because of the fear of getting to little for it.

If you set a reserve price then the auction fails if it does not meet the minimum. If you don't set a reserve price then you are on the hook for whatever it ends at. Or you weasel out of it and take some negative feedback on the chin.

At least, that's how it used to work.

About the ipad 3 not using a quad core, could it use a dual core cortex-A15 or is it too soon?

I'd say it's too soon, but it's Apple, so you never know. They use new Intel mobile CPUs before anyone else (different story, because they don't have to design them, I know) and they were the first to use the SGX 543, I think.

The average person doesn't know that the iPad 3 is coming, but the tech geeks that will flood the market with used iPad 2's do...and they will drive the used price down.

I don't think it'll drive it down that much, I stupidly sold my original iPad right after the 2 was announced and I still only lost about $150 on it.

Is $350 worth it for my old iPad 2, WiFi 16GB black version?

It is engraved (my mother, ugh), which is seeming to put off a lot of potential buyers. No shipping cost to me, just $350 straight in my pocket.

Live podcasts, like the Vergecast that will start in half an hour, not recorded ones.

d’oh. sorry. I saw podcasts and obviously skipped over the live bit.

well, I think it depends on the service the Verge uses for their streaming. some of them are still flash-only. others have apps for iOS like justin.tv.

The Verge is using Ustream and there's an app, but I guess it still won't work, because I just remembered they're doing video podcasts now and you can't run a video in the background on iOS. Multitasking my ass.

Guess this is still sort of relevant, eh?

It supports it if the programmer can be arsed to program the ability in. But like developers refuse to take advantage of the Universal app feature by releasing separate versions for separate prices or the ones who won't take the time to update their retina apps to also work on the iPad, it all comes down to how the developer feels. Apple can't force developers to take advantage of the cool features. Which sucks.

So I would contact the developer and ask them what's up.

What are the chances that the iPad will have the world's first production ARM A15-based SoC, instead of an A9-based SoC? (I'm not talking about Apply A5 / A6 nomenclature, rather the underlying microarchitecture).

There is supposed to a really large improvement in quad core A15 performance, clock for clock over quad core A9, mainly because of improved bandwidth, but also because of other contributors to improved IPC (instructions per clock) such as larger caches, better branch prediction, out of order execution, etc.

If the iPad3 is still A9 based, then we know where they will go for the iPad 4 (or whatever the iPad for 2013 is called).

It looks like it will either be a Dual A15 or a quad A9 based on rumors.

Quick questions. Can I get my cbr, and cbz files onto an ipad without using itunes?

Is there a comic book reader app that also reads .zip, .rar, and PDF?

Is it free? (I can flex here)

Last, are YouTube videos and Netflix streaming in 720/1080p on the iPad app?

Thinking of getting the iPad 3, but it has to meet those requirements or fuhgetaboutit.

Thanks in advance

There are several, the best being Comic Zeal. A great free alternative, and the best free option out there, is called Bookman.

I believe both read all of those formats. You NEED to use iTunes, though, I think. You go into the apps section and find the app below, and add file contents there.

OR, since these comic apps have wireless methods, you could transfer them from your browser if you're on the same local network.

Not sure about the YT/Netflix thing, though.

for bookman pro, you do not need to use itunes.

bookman will read a dropbox directory.

and i think you can still use that comczeal sync tool for the PC to get files onto the ipad, bypassing itunes (not sure if they got rid of that for v5).

but i like the dropbox integration of bookman better. in the pro version, it shows up as a bookshef and then you tap on the comics to download them locally.

So has the iPad hysteria died down enough such that when the iPad 3 is released I can just walk into Best Buy or whatever and just buy one? Or will I need to play games and reserve it and such?

I really don't care if I don't get it day 1 since its not for me (its a gift for someone else) but I am just curious. What happened with iPad 2?

iPad 1 had some lines, but I remember being able to walk into Apple stores in the afternoon and pick one up if I wanted to. iPad 2, forget about it. I had a hard time getting one, I remember. Every store that got a few of them would sell out instantly in-store/online. I expect the same with iPad 3, the improvements are quite significant (dat retina).

Well if he's gonna pay for one or another, I would definitely recommend Comic Zeal over Bookman, even though Bookman lite was a real life saver before I was able to purchase Comic Zeal.

Though it's $8, for universal.. $4 for the iPone-only version.

Oh and:

So it's still there. I don't use it tbh, I should try it out.

I am pretty sure iPad 2 was hard to find in stores for about a month or two. I would expect the same or worse for ipad 3.

easiest way to buy one would just be to order from apple's website when they go on sale then chill and wait the week or more until it ships out.

What do you really have to lose by reserving it? Just easier all around, better than going through a clusterfuck on launch to get one.

Yeah, that's the way to go unless you must have it day one.I just hope Apple has fixed the light bleeding issues that plagued iPad 2's, that shit is not nice. Hopefully the new IGZO screens are better in this regard. They could also solve this problem by using optical lamination like they do with iPhone 4/4S (I wish).

Comic Zeal, from the little I played with it recently after it finally received an update, is not the best app and hasn't been for a long time (although it is the best "tell myself it's the best app because I spent $8 on it" app). Comic Glass is the best app (although I haven't used Bookman since it went paid, so I don't know if the zooming issue has been sorted out).

In my experience, for

Reading: Glass > Zeal > Bookman (unless the zooming is fixed)
Getting comics on the ipad: Bookman (FTP or dropbox) > Glass (wireless webserver thing which is a bit more of hassle than FTP, dropbox?) >>> Zeal (it's own thing that I think still reconverts all your files into it's own thing).

Glass and Bookman also both allow exporting files to other programs if you need to, like Stanza (which you should also have).

There was a lot more excitement for iPad 2 than iPad 1 and I'd say iPad 3 hype has already more than exceeded iPad 2's and it hasn't even been revealed yet.

I want to get an Ipad 3, but I have a mac, and last time I needed a repair Apple wouldn't let me send it by mail to get it repaired, and I had to drive 4 hours to the closest city with an apple store. I'm just overthinking, but in the case I need to repair it/get it replaced, do they allow to do it by mail or is the same policy as the macs?

Seriously? The organization and categorization of series is superb on it, something I didn't think I found with any other comic app. The reader for it is excellent, too.

Also, i'm pretty sure CZ allows you to transfer via FTP or Dropbox. Also 'converts' them depending on device, I think, or else I wouldn't have been able to fit so many comics on my phone.

That feature definitely helped for me.

This is why i'm scared to be an early adopter, tbh. Well, either way i'm gonna have to wait a week or two after release to get it into my country, but that still worries me.
