Mass Effect 3 Demo Impressions [Online Open To All]

So when I restarted my computer to get UAC working (which fixed it) Windows ran a CHKDSK and guess what? It found a ton of corrupted/messed up/whatever files on my hard drive and EVERY SINGLE ONE was invlolved with Origin. EA files, Origin files, Battlefield 3 demo files...

Fuck Origin. It's a piece of fucking shit and ruins your OS.

And I can't even get this fucking demo to work online.

Quite probably this. BioWare said that storing both animation sets in the memory cost an additional ~2mb. A measily 2mb. But on consoles, that was kind of a big deal, and they cut it.

Meanwhile in 8GB PC RAM land...

This is some inexcusable bullshit right here

Online isn't in 'til the 17th unless you enter some BF3 code...

Is it up on Origin yet and more importantly, did they actually add controller support this time?

No official controller support in both the demo and full game.

Its quite obvious Bioware didnt want the PC version to be better than the console ones, when it usually is. I wish someone would ask them why. What do they have against PC?

Anyway, even if i had a 360, i still would prefer to play at 60 FPS on PC.

Again with no controller support. Son of a bitch! Why the hell is it that the further time goes on the less options PC games have? I remember back when I had TONS of options. *old man rant over*

It makes no sense why Bioware refuses to put 360 pad support in their games. Every other major developer does it.

Lazy as fuck

The game plays great and looks good on my PC, but the one major flaw is I cannot see the entire dialog box. I can only give the Paragon answer and can't even see the Evil answer. :/

It's like my screen is cropped or something. I can't even see all of the hud when I try and pause the game and select powers either. Man I'm gonna have to settle for the console versions, which is really a bummer.

Can someone post PC screenshots?

Did you try changing resolution or something? Might be a bug with the demo.

Downloaded the PC version, and. What. The. Fuck.

Seriously, what have they done to this game?!

Like for real, its bad. It's Dragon Age 2 bad.

And yeah, I know it's only a demo.

-Why is the combat so FAST. Like, I can't get a grip of it. Im not sure whats happening.

- The animations looks awful. Like the running, come on. And the lip-synching.

+ The music is better, thank god. Love the piano.

- Graphics. Look worse than ME1. Seriously. It's not good.

- Dialouge.

First impressions are real bad. Canceling my pre-order.

It's official, I need a new PC/laptop. I tried to run the demo and twice my laptop simply shut down after several minutes of gameplay. It was hot. ;_;

Also, the game looks hideous if you put all lighting/shadow options on lowest settings; especially Ashley and her creepy smile :P

And I can't believe BioWare still hasn't learned how to do a proper CC screen. Twice I've tried doing a decent looking Shepard and twice he eventually looked a lot better in-game than he looked in the character creator. Why can't BioWare look at EVE - not only does that game has glorious CC (where characters actually look natural), but it also has a photo mode where you can check your character by changing her/his facial expression and changing the overall lighting (intensity and direction).

Kinda want.

Ah, yes, "Reaper toys." The race of sentient starships immortalized in model form allegedly waiting to be bought by the Mass Effect community. We have dismissed such foolishness.

Well I switched it to 1080 p, maybe I'll try 720 p. I think it may have something to do with me playing on my tv instead of a monitor. I had this same problem with another bioware game (Kotor 2). The dialog is all pretty much off screen.

Just finished the demo:

- Combat feels a lot better then ME2, the new roll and melee animations are excellent, feel really nice.
- I feel like the Biotics, particularly Pull, Throw, and Warp travel extremely fast, not sure if their travel time is any different then ME2, also the behavior for when they would arch around corners or over cover doesn't feel as good in ME3 as it did in ME2 because of the speed at which they travel.
- Not much dialog but that's understandable
- It was really exciting to interact with the characters again, eager to see the scenarios they have planned where a squad member has to use their expertise.

Lack of working online on PC version is annoying

Hearing bad news about the demo from all over, is this another Tortanic? Biodrones appear to be in full denial on the official forums as per usual.

Check your TV setting make sure it's on Just Scan, 1:1 pixel mapping or something like that. It sounds like you have some bad overscan going on.

Having tried the 360 demo beforehand....is the PC version lacking per object motion blur? Or is it much more refined? I don't know if I'm being an idiot and not finding an option for it...

ME threads really do bring out a LOT of haters on this forum. More than any other game honestly. its crazy how much people make fun of bioware and the ME series yet the games are fantastic and are taking RPGs away from the archaic turn based JRPG/kids with spiky hair formula. Im not sure what more they could do to impress people. The game has great music, graphics, a good story and nice combat - what else is there really?

You have got to be trolling me. I'm on "Punk'd" right now, aren't I?

The PC version only supports one type of AA: FXAA, and as with all FXAA it looks like a turd. Though quite typical of a UE3 game, the best AA (assuming it works) is to force it.

Mixed my terms up and meant motion blur, but I did notice the anti-aliasing was kinda crap. It wasn't doing every edge and just seemed like it was turned off most of the time.

Love ME1/ME2, this demo though, bleh. The long ass cooldown on adept abilities unless you choose those points is frustrating. Abilities still sharing a cooldown too makes it even worse. And I think I may be the only one who hates the new rolling mechanic. But oh well it's the universe that'll make me play it, just not the gameplay.

Just played through the demo. I thought it was pretty fun. My only disappointment was that there seemed to be fewer dialogue choices than usual. But, hey, it's just a demo, so there could be a lot more in the full game. Regardless, I'll still be buying this on release

edit: Oh wait, one more thing. I thought it was really lame that you couldn't put your gun away. It felt weird

To focus on the negatives, esp, on the poor animation quality of NPCs and the removal holster animation (meaning no more rotating camera outdoors around Shepard to see the scenery, which is frankly supremely asinine), I have to wonder whether this is an older build of the game and whether the final product is going to address some of them.

The cooldown is dictated by the weapons you have now, and the demo doesn't let you choose for that part. The actual game will fare much better there.

No holstering in the full version either.

Well that's good to hear, couldn't even combo in the demo :/. Have stayed mostly in the dark so my bad.

Confirmed not to be final code. That in combination with how a Mass Effect game doesn't demo well at all, I wonder why they released this in the first place? To satisfy the needs of BSN?

To satisfy the needs of PC gamers who would bitch that they don't get a demo when the 360 and PS3 do.

I read that solution on another forum when I was trying to fix the same problem with KOTOR 2. Unfortunately advanced settings are "grayed out' on my tv menu. I can't even select it. It's just ...gray. :^/ I kind of know that is the problem though.

Let me quote TheOctagon:

What does it say when you intend to write a list of things you hope to see in Mass Effect 3, only to find yourself dwelling on things you hope not to? It says to me that if the tail is art and the dog commerce, the tail isn’t wagging the dog very much nowadays. It says that, at this level of triple-A development, despite all rhetoric to the contrary, there is no contract between a game and its fans that the market cannot veto. Things I don’t want to see in ME3, then, include its non-competitive multiplayer mode being used as some bollocks pretext for encrypted ini files and stripped-out console commands. I don’t want a lapse from the improved textures of ME2′s DLC to the porridge of the original release. I don’t want to think that BioWare’s asset pipeline still can’t produce a ‘proper’ PC game in the twilight of current-gen consoles. I don’t want to think the words ‘Origin’ or ‘port’ at all during play or when attempting basic mods. And I don’t want to be told that any of the above will be “addressed with a future patch,” knowing the likelihood of no such outcome after the game’s first month on sale. Tell me if you think I’ve missed anything or gone crazy…

Do we have any indication on how early the demo is?Was the leaked demo very different?

BTW anyone here played the ME2 demo back in the day?How indicative was it of the final game?

Anyone else finding the multiplayer component really unstable? I've had it crash my 360 about 5 times now. And I thought Skyrim was bad!

Had someone join a game mid-session = instant lockup.

Cliff notes:

+ Combat is better

- Looks very average. Also FXAA is a sub par solution for PC owners - I know this and I'm not paid large amounts per annum to augment a graphics engine for a AAA video game.
- High dynamic range on the sound is awful and everything other than speech or gun fire sounds muted (yes I have an expensive sound system). Apparently the end of the world sounds fairly quiet.
- Intro is so many kinds of dull and disappointing I don't even know where to begin.
- Does Bioware work on the assumption that we've all played their DLC and read their fucking comics/books in preparation for this game? Hi James Vega old buddy who I've known for so long.

Conclusion: I'm buying it but I'm not impressed by this demo at all.
