Apple sells 3 million new iPads in 3 days

Every phone since 1999 has come with Bejewelled

Nokia 3650: GAMING DEVICE

I'm sure if they charged for an email app, Facebook app, and web browser, it would be the top 3.

It's not. Some people are just pissy about touch based gaming.

I'm not pissy about it. I have GTA III on my Android. It's not as fun or as good as a controller. It's just that simple. You know when you see people trying to shoehorn games like Forza or something onto Kinect? That's how I feel when people are trying to say "touch" gaming is just as good. It's not.

I enjoy lot's of games on it though, I'm not against it ... it's just that a developer hasn't shown me that the games I really enjoy (Adventure, RPG, racing, FPS) are as competent or better with a touch screen. Will it happen? Possibly, but I haven't seen it yet so I'm unsure about the "Tablet Future of Gaming" because of that.

Not against it, not for it. I have to see some proof besides 10 year old games getting ported. Infinity Blade seemed like a Kinect game where you are "kinda" in control, GTA is awesome but it's because it's on my phone, not because the controls are good, they are kind of annoying honestly. Game Dev Story rocks, Battleheart was fun (although short) and all the NFS games absolutely blow with touch controls. I haven't tried Dead Space yet but that's neither here nor there as I didn't really enjoy the console versions.

I DO enjoy Draw Something, Words with Friends, and various other time killers that are quick pick ups like Angry Birds and such but I have yet to see ANY game that I enjoy the controls or what is on screen more than 90% of the PS1 or PS2 libraries (not even counting current gen).

That's why I don't "embrace" it. Not because I fear change (have a Wii, have a Kinect, have 2 Moves), it's because with my Android and my old iPhone, I don't see the games that interest me MORE than what is available on almost every other device I use for gaming.

For people that are not buying handhelds such as 3DS or Vita and completely satisfied with what the iPad offers; good for them! It's not for everybody.

I see no reason why iPad can't be considered amongst Vita and 3DS. The fact that the games are cheaper and more 'casual' is irrelevant. The majority of the Wii's library is 'casual' and aimed at a certain demographic, but that never stopped anyone from comparing it with the PS3 and the 360. As long as games are being made for it on a consistent basis and people are purchasing them, it's no different than Vita and 3DS, in my opinion.

I concur though I still prefer playing with real controls most of the time...and I AM an iPad owner myself :)

That's fine. Before I bought out iPad, I thought our lapdesk worked just fine for browsing on the couch, but even then the iPad proved to be more convenient & easier for web browsing. Plus, it's much easier to carry around the house in different rooms.

I've been really surprised how much use the iPad gets.

I'm about 50/50 when I'm sitting at the couch. If I want to sit back or lie down while I'm watching TV, I'll have the iPad out. If I'm a little more alert or I want to chat/do other multitasking while I'm browsing, I'll use my laptop on the coffee table.

Unless you (and the wife) are constantly gaming and/or doing work at home, you'll find the iPad to be a far more convenient and easier way to browse the web. I think most people (myself included) were of the "I have no use for an iPad. My PC does everything and more." mindset until they actually get one. Then you realize it's awesome not being tied to a desktop, and/or having to carry around a much heavier laptop around the house.

But yeah, I bring home my (beast of a) work laptop whenever I need to finish up some CAD projects at home.

You have a point, i just don´t know if it´s a big of enough point to justify 500/600 euros.

3DS and Vita are consoles. That's it. They are made for gaming. If you want to compare phones and tablets do so with PCs and it's not a good fight ...

I have an iPad 1 and I don't like it that much for browsing to be honest. Beside the fact that some sites don't display properly (I can never look up restaurant menus on the thing), I'm a compulsive tab opener and usually surf with 30+ tabs open. Needless to say the lack of RAM is a problem.

Is this better on the new iPad? Can I have more tabs open and not have the whole page reload if I look at more than 2 before going back?

Or is there a better browser than Safari? Lately I've been thinking about a windows 8 tablet as an upgrade instead, just to have no compromises (and keep my iPad 1 for the games I currently play on it).

Not a fair fight for PC's that is. iPad is already running circles around the desktop market and soon will also outsell the entire laptop market.

The new iPad has 4 times the RAM (which allows for more tabs). Or you can use the iCab web browser for more tabs.

A few questions for the Ipad 3 owners:

-How bad the the heating? I heard it gets very hot when you run lots of games, what about general use?
-Does the charging really take a lot longer?
-Is it really a lot more heavy than the Ipad2?

1) I personally never experienced any heating problems so far
2/3) Never had another iPad for comparison but charging seems same as any other device I have and it doesn't feel heavy at all.

That still doesn't tell me how many tabs I can look at before the original page has to reload. On my iPad is 2 at most, sometimes even 1. 4x 1 is just 4, which is still pretty bad. 8 could be acceptable, but since no one has posted anything about it I just don't know.

I've tried iCab and it has the same problem of reloading pages.

Anyone with a new iPad willing to weigh on the issue?

Wrong thread.

Probably a bit, but the extra RAM is most obvious when opening multiple tabs in Safari. I can have 9 open without any of them having to reload, whereas on the iPad 2 tabs would be reloading after 3 or 4.

Penny Arcade just put out a piece on the iPad. They call it a portable gaming device.

http://penny-arcade.com/report/edit...ng-portable-game-system-of-2012-our-thoug/all
Interesting read, cheers. They make no bones about the fact it's a gaming device, do they?

This bit made me go 'shiiiiiiiiiiiit'...

Penny Arcade said:
58 million iPads have been sold since the line’s introduction in 2010. Nintendo has sold 151.06 million units of the DS systems worldwide, and that’s adding up every model that has been released since 2004. Apple has managed to do a third of that business in just under two years.
I hadn't really thought about it before, but those are crazy numbers.

Well IMO, it's not a gaming device. The majority of people who buy any iOS device, don't buy them mainly for the games. They buy them for everything these things can do.

On the other hand, people who buy a 3DS or PSV, buy those mainly for the games. With their other features being secondary.

So is a PC not a gaming device?

Are games the main reason why people buy PCs? If so, then yes, if not than no. Yes, I do game on my PC, it's why I built it, but there are PCs out there that are new, and can't handle games. Those tend to be the PCs that the lay man buys.

I bought iPad 2 on day one and since then I would say roughly 70% of my time spent gaming has been on consoles, %30 on iPad (Galaxy on Fire 2, Plants v Zombies, Dead Space, Ticket to Ride, Bike Baron, Puzzlejuice, Contre Jour, Sonic CD, Spirits, Collision Effect, etc.), 0% on traditional hand helds (I sold my PSP a few months ago). So yes, it is a gaming machine for me.

Okay so you just proved yourself wrong then. I bought my iPad primarily for music production. Is it a digital audio workstation then?

Yet, I can't stand gaming on my iPad. I enjoy it on my iPhone but I find the iPad to cumbersome for games. I don't consider it a gaming device at all.

I wouldn't refer to it as a gaming device. It's an all purpose multimedia device and that's why it's so successful. It can do a million things really well.

My Vita and 3DS are my primary portable gaming devices and I think they give me a far and above better gaming experience but falter at social/multimedia.

So if the main reason someone buys an iPad is for gaming, then it's a gaming device, correct?

My gaming PC is one of my gaming devices. My MacBook Air is my work device and not a gaming device for me. Journalists and enthusiasts need to stop trying to dump everything (especially iOS devices) into very rigid categories if they are obviously meant to do a wide range of things.

I don't know if the Ipad is a gaming device. But if that's what I want it to be, it is my gaming device. That's the key, the Ipad is what you want it to be.

You can also buy an Xbox and use it primarily as a movies/TV//music/video conferencing/news apps streaming device.

You could and for you it simply wouldn't be a gaming device but it's obvious that the Xbox has been built from the ground up for gaming in mind. iOS devices were developed with a wide range of applications in mind right from the get go.

I realistically can't imagine anyone doing that with an Xbox unless they were a moron (or had XBMC installed).

Isn't that what you are precisely doing by saying that your iPad and Macbook air aren't gaming devices?

Isn't that what you are precisely doing by saying that your iPad and Macbook air aren't gaming devices?

I'm saying that for me, personally, they fall into these categories. When I'm talking about enthusiasts and journalists, many are trying to put the devices into a single category in the public eye and define them for everyone else. That's what I have an issue with.

I don't think Steve Jobs ever wanted the iPad to be defined as a gaming device. If it's a gaming device for you, that's great however!

On the flipside, the Vita was designed to be a gaming device first and foremost. That's Sony's intention. If you don't want to use it for it's primary purpose, then it isn't a gaming device for you.

You can play games on Chrome right now. So, Chrome a videogame console too?

Although to be honest, even a shitty watch I had once had Tetris on it.

Exactly what does the semantics argument hope to achieve anyway?

I think Sony and Nintendo are concerned about iOS gaming even though they'll never admit it. I have a lot of nieces and nephews and iOS devices mean more to them than the DS. Would you agree?

*edit. However it sickens me to see how much they associate with Angry Birds vs. almost any core Nintendo franchise. :(

Shouldn't there be a chart with Vita/ 3DS/ iPad hardware sales in the first XX months of being on the market?

I'd love to see that.

That would be foolish.

It's obvious that iPad is going to outsell the other two devices by a ridiculous amount. The iPad is a broad range multimedia device while the Vita and 3DS are marketed primarily as gaming handhelds.

Bringing numbers into this serves no purpose.

Should Sony and Nintendo be concerned about iOS's penetration into the gaming space, absolutely, but I'm not about to declare the death of old school handheld gaming.

I think Sony and Nintendo simply have to realize that they don't hold as much of that market as they once did and scale back their expectations and see if it's cost effective to continue in that space.

Yes, Chrome is a platform for web-games. And yes, if your shitty watch has a game that its a game and watch gaming platform.

Most of my gaming has taken place on iPad the past few months. There's something about the freshness of constant new releases and the variety of game types that gets me. I love checking all the latest releases every wednesday night.

~370 million PCs were sold in 2011. Xbox 360, as the best selling home console, did 14.9 million.

Again, the relevant comparison would be game software revenue.
