Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 reaches 500k copies sold in a day (UP: 1 million copies in 3 days)

I knew in my gut it would be good when I saw the reveal trailer, but I was not ready for this kind of brilliance. Absolutely beautiful game and an amazing gaming achievement, they have set the bar so damn high.

This is by far my favorite comment.
Square was king of turn based RPG. The FF franchise started to decline once they switched to real time.
But even with recent success of Metaphor, Persona 5, Baldur Gate and now Clair Obscur they can't seem to catch a hint.
It's really time to get rid of the old guard (Kitase as a producer) at Square and go back to their roots.

Nah, I think the FF7 Remake series is among the best things in gaming right now. Best RPG combat in my book. Super fun, fast paced, reactionary and still tactically deep. Also square has like a dozen turned based RPG's that are not FF. Imho we had so many turn based RPG's the past couple years, that there is even less need for the FF franchise to go back to that, since this market is readily served.

At any rate, this game is amazing, best turn based combat I have ever played. So much more fun than Metaphor or Persona (I still like those games and I plan on finishing metaphor, but this has higher priority). Also the entire pacing of the game is much better. Great voice acting and stellar writing. Can not wait to get back into it and parry to my hearts content.

Its true though that the image quality is a bit garbo. Everything looks just a bit messy and unstable. I have given the characters short hair, that helps a bit. I wish the readability in general would be better. Menus are a bit overloaded (its fine after getting used to it, but its a far cry from something like Persona), sometimes certain attacks are heart to see (especially ranged ones with projectiles) and I have trouble identifying the different stains, sine they are only color coded.

Its not a perfect game, but fuck me, I am having alot of fun with it. Also the humor in this game is hilarious at times, really good writing.

You are the first person complaining about stuttering, there is almost none in game
Yeah I haven't seen any shader stutter and maybe a couple of traversal stutters.
Im intrigued how that can be actually given the engine.

They also showed very little of the game before release

I actually took a risk to preorder the Lumiere Edition of the game because it was basically almost sight unseen. I just had a good feeling about it lol
I pre-ordered on speck as well. Best decision ever. What a ride, im still in act 2. I might buy the 150.00 collectors edition if it becomes available again. This dev deserves nothing but love.

I respect your opinion on FF7R but for me it's a big let down. Materia system is boring, story is a mess and it's full of cringe elements like Chadley and Mai.
Square has turn based RPG but not much AAA and it's no FF. I still think they should go back to TB and I seems i'm not alone.

Well deserved!
Champagne corks popping for the Devs no doubt!
Game looks incredible, beautiful art design.
Heard nothing but good things about it.
Definitely on my radar once I've played some of the other 8 squillion games in my backlog.

They deserve all the success in the world. This game is a masterpiece. The world building, characters, voice acting, animation, combat, enemy designs, classes, story, music, level design, environment art. Everything is 10/10.

Best RPG I've played in a looong time.

Based.

I hope they have the sense to sell sick gold black purple hoodies. I want one that mimics what the team wears. Gladly pay $70 for a zip up of quality with a 33 on the arm.

30-odd man studio, and their first ever game. Absolutely unreal success, and yet it's completely deserved in every respect. Sandfall made something special with E33.

Really happy about these numbers. The developers really deserved it, you can tell the game is made with big amount of love and was a passion project.

Feared the worst for them when Oblivion was shadow dropped the same week, such awful timing, especially when they put up their game on the same rental service. But looks like they have exceeded their own expectations here - so great news.

I get it...sometimes we tech straight to GTA and skip a few 101 classes. Can't handle the battle system, catch up on Mario RPG first. You'll be fresh out of driving school, ready to pass the test, and buy that Corvette. All from your impeccable reflexes with a SNES gamepad, your first God-given skill.

I think the issue there will be the game isn't that long. I'm already on Act 3. If people don't do the side content I could see someone finishing it in a week.
Could easiliy be done. I started on Friday and i'm currently on the last boss. Mind you i've played almost non-stop Friday evening through to Sunday evening. I fully intend to backtrack and do the optional areas and bosses, havn't been this captivated by a game in a while.

Did anyone on the core team work at other major developers in the past? Would be incredible if this was truly their first rodeo.

A bunch are former Ubisoft employees. The CEO himself had a hand in various development aspects of the game. He wasn't just some dusty suit, but actually a creative on the team who participated in things like the narration and game design.

And I'll prob get mine today later, how is it running on Linux? If it's good enough I'll get it on Steam, else I'll just renew my Game Pass sub to play on Windows

Yea I didn't play quite that long but I had about 3 5 hours sessions with the game from Friday night till Sunday night. I also plan to go back and do the optional areas once I get to the end. I see some people wasting their time with it early on but I have no desire to do that.

can someone tell me exactly what is so great about this game ? im really thinking of buying it but im not 100% sure

IMHO, it takes everything we've loved about old-school WRPGs and JRPG's and dials it up to 11.

  • Very interesting and original world building
  • Great story, characters, writing and no "cringe" finally for a JRPG style game
  • Pacing is great and I haven't experienced any filler BS
  • Addicting combat that doesn't get boring and keeps things interesting
  • No hand holding, overdone tutorials and unnecessary dialogue spelling out the obvious
  • Offers a good challenge (there are difficulty options) along with some awesome optional bosses
  • Phenomenal music, sound design and voice acting (Charlie Cox from Daredevil, Andy Serkis from Lord of the Rings)
  • It's $45 on sale right now for a game well worth $70+
  • Made by a small group of passionate AA developers with a restricted budget that puts AAA companies to shame

It has basically rekindled my love for this hobby when things were starting to seem boring.

I didn't know anything about this game, and I don't like RPGs… But I do trust my friends' opinions on games, and my cereal friend unintentionally convinced me to buy this game.

Imagine my surprise and delight to discover it's on game pass! Awwww yeeeaaaahh!

If I had to sum it up incredibly briefly: it's got the soul of an indie game with the polish and presentation of a AAA game.
That's kind of how I describe most From games too.

Other than incredible music, great graphics, sublime art, super interesting story, very good combat system and affordable price it's... mediocre as fuck. [/s]

You all convinced me. I picked up the Deluxe Edition on Humble Bundle for $43.19. If it sucks then I'm going to have a long talk with my fellow GAF members.

I would have been day 1 on this if it wasn't for my self-inflicted backlog. It looks right up my alley. Happy for the devs.

Yea I almost put in my backlog but I'm glad I didn't. Some games I just get a feeling about and I let them jump the backlog. This was one of those games.

Fuck the hype is real and word of mouth is doing its job. I got an extra ps5 copy by mistake and I listed it at cost on market place since it's sold out around here locally:

All these inquiries, I had to put my phone on vibration

The Witcher 3 is technically an ARPG, and it probably sold more than all of those combined.

Don't get me wrong I played and enjoyed everything you mentioned.

I just don't think a game needs to fit into only one category to be considered great.

Game is sold out at every major retailer in NZ, I can't remember the last time this happened.
I didn't think they printed that many physical copies of it, nobody expected it to blow up like this

It's sold out physical everywhere in the US except on Amazon

The Lumiere Edition is currently listing for $300+ on eBay lol
