Diablo 3 Beta [Beta withdrawal underway!]

I think they, Blizzard, said somewhere that it wouldn't make sense to go by that fact for very long. Plus-skill weapons would yield better results on higher levels. It's just that we haven't seen those items yet.

True.

In other news, poison dart does not seem to be affected by elemental damage. So there's that.

Looks like the beta has been pumped up a notch. Skeleton King hits like a truck.

The Weapon DPS->Pumps caster spellpower definitely threw me for a loop. It's not intuitive at all (based on WoW experience) and hopefully they find a way to call attention to that for new players.

It is intuitive if you recognize that in WoW, the means of improving the player a LOT when he gets a new weapon was to introduce OBSCENE amounts of spellpower on the weapons - which was something that always stood out even when all items had spellpower, and now only weapons (and maybe trinkets?) retain that in WoW. So in WoW: better ilvl weapon -> better spell damage anyway - and the same is true in Diablo III as well.

In Diablo II, I sometimes felt like that if you do not have a very solid Nightmare/Hell weapon drop, you were kinda fucked after a certain point - but there, the +skills and the +cast speed were the main factors. And +40% cast speed basically does the same - makes you able to dish out more damage faster, also making one individual cast safer in combat :D

I'm glad this is being brought up... this discussion of how damage is calculated. I like theorycrafting. Did a bunch in WoW... and I see myself doing it when D3 gets "real."

As I understand it, through various threads and topics I've read, your damage is calculated as follows (for Barb):

[(Weapon Damage) x (1 + (%STR)) ] x %Ability Damage

So say I have a 20 damage item and a Barb that has 60 STR. We would look at it as follows:

(20 x 1.6) = 32 (This is my BASE DAMAGE)

Then based on the ability I use... we simply use the modifier for that ability. So... for example... Hammer of the Ancient.

32 x 200% = 64 --> Hammer of the Ancient will hit for 64.

Where I am currently working out my crafting is how passive buffs and percentages are calculated in this equation. I believe they would be placed within the base damage equation... and then multiplied by the ability modifier.

I will say this. I do NOT find the calculation of damage very intuitive at all. It's not hard... granted... but for someone who has never done this type of stuff it can be a bit overwhelming at times. Seeing an item with a HUGE DPS number attached to it, I find, is a bit misleading.

What I am having trouble with is calculating dual wielding items versus 2-handed items.

Worth noting here... this equation can be used for ANY of the 5 classes. Personally, I find it weird that a dagger's damage is used in the equation for a Witch Doctor's ability... but it's just a frame of mind that I will have to get used to, I suppose.

The thing that's tricky here is that the DPS number is based on the basic attack per second rate.. except no one uses a basic attack and it isn't applicable to some/most skills, I think? For example, the APS of respective weapons might apply to Cleave and Bash (just guessing), but Hammer Of The Ancients is surely slower, no? It seems like the big giant DPS number isn't particularly useful except as a ballpark reference.

Apparently a fantsite FAQ has been released and can be read here: http://diablo.incgamers.com/blog/comments/diablo-iii-fansite-qa

A most curious question was asked with an interesting answer that raises my eyebrows:

Q. Since there seems to be a cap for adventurer stats ( +MF/+GF), will the stacks refresh on a Rare or Champion kill after you hit stack cap? Example: Say a stack cap of 5, on the 6th Rare/Champion kill, will the whole stack refreshes?

A: The whole stack refreshes.

Does this mean that MF/GF as a whole is capped, or is this simply in reference to the Nephlam Valor? Anyone have any insight on this?

Q. Will you be looking at the visuals of the Wizard skill "Blizzard" and “Meteor” after the community's negative reaction to it? Players aren’t impressed with their current visuals as compared to those in D2.

There are plenty of people that like them, and plenty of people that like one or more of the rune variants. No, we don’t have any plans to make changes to any skill visuals.

Well, that kinda sucked. Nothing big, but I had hoped they would change the visuals on "Blizzard" spell. It really doesn´t look good.

It´s suppose to be ice, but looks like large chunks of water pouring down:

Fast weapon = fast attacks. Magic or physical.
Fast attacks generate more 'resource'
Fast weapons do less damage with said resource, but may be useful for utility or CD skills

If you have inherent regeneration (mana or hatred) slower weapons with high DPS might be better.

Then you factor in if all you need is one fast hit, one slow hit, etc. to find a balance you like.
I've been favoring slow 2h on my barb since it allows me to one hit mobs and I don't use my Fury skills.

Thanks for all that.

Goddamn I have the worst luck with friggin' battle.net. Haven't played the beta since I complained about its brief outage the other day, and it's down for maintenance now when I try again.

This reminds me that I'm probably just going to pick up the physical copy, in the hopes that there is a delicious color manual in it and the suspicion that there is no fucking way the game is going to be working at midnight launch, anyway.

Yup, wanted to try some random things and color me surprised; Bnet is down as usual.

That means that if you keep up a stack of five MF/GF bonuses thanks to the Nephalem Valor reward, and you encounter a 6th group, applying a new "buff" will refresh the whole stack's duration. Which means you can keep up killing elite groups and then it will be 1 stack, 2 stack, 3 stack , 4 stack, 5 stack, 5 stack, 5 stack...etc - until you no longer encounter a new one in time.

Soooooo good. But Diablo lost all his feminine parts?

Q. Will weapons with elemental affixes get extra damage against their elemental counter-part (e.g. Holy weapons get more damage against undead)?

No, we don’t want people to feel like they’re forced to carry around a bunch of weapons with each damage type and swap them in and out to remain effective. We actually had it in the game at one point where each damage type had a secondary effect, and we were super excited about it, and then we played it and it just sucked. It sounds super cool, but in practice it just forces too much on the player and makes decisions for them on which types of items are best based on the damage type.

Glad they asked this. It was pretty much what i was looking for. Elemental damage just adds a status (like cold making enemies slower) and looks.

Great art, I like the second to last the most. Looks very Goat like - in a good way.

BTW, which one of these is final? The last one resembles the cover the most, but all of them are quite a bit different.

After seeing the new Skill videos on the bnet homepage i really have to say that the demon hunter look really underwhelming.
I mean they are probably good to use and everything but they really don´t look like much.

I don't know man, I've had more fun with the Demon Hunter than any of the other classes. Something about the way you have to fight with the class makes it probably the most strategic of the five in my opinion. I do love the Barb and the Wizard, but Demon Hunter day one for me.

It's funny because... different patches have made me enjoy different classes in different ways.

I LOVE the Demon Hunter. Very versatile. A lot of different ways to play depending on what you like to do. If you like kiting and movement... dual wielding one handers, spamming snare while dodging around is exceptionally fun........ using environment to Line of sight... great shit.

Right now I'm on a Monk kick. Don't know why. I like his speed and combo choices. I don't think he's as satisfying as the Barb (and, really, I think that was intended)... but his speed makes up for the power he lacks.

I still think I'm Barb day one. I didn't play D2 and I've always had a thing for Whirlwind Barbs. This is my chance! I also secretly wanted to play Warrior in WoW... but was "stuck" playing a Mage (for YEARS). It's time to get into the fray and play a melee class.

So this has probably been asked a billion times already but I didn't see it anywhere when doing a quick scan. Are they going to be doing anymore beta invites? I want to try this game sooo bad. Maybe it's a sign that I haven't gotten invite though. The Blizzard god's know I wouldn't stop playing or something.

I agree, the monk skills lack the obvious punch the barb has, but when he go's all speedy he's pretty awesome. Barb is my main as well, after that probably the witch doctor, i believe he's currently the least played but i think that class will become very popular.

Not having any kind of trade-off decisions to make can get kinda boring as well. Wonder whether they're striking the proper balance.

Trust me, there are a LOT of 'trade-off' decisions to make with loot and weapons regardless of the elemental effects.

Yes, they are still inviting people into beta.

I played more than my fair share of D2 but could never get into the barb in that game...but I am totally day one on barb in D3. The sound and visual effects on all his attacks just feel so....strong. You really feel those hits, it's great :D

As I probably said somewhere else in the thread, overleveled Barb + Cleave + mace =

so quick question, since i haven't been following D3 for a while...

i know there was a huge uproar in terms of the art style ( not gothic, grim, etc) and they turned it more cartoony,

did blizzard comment on that at all?

the footage i've seen really turns me off :/ (not the graphics, but the style and animations)

They said get over it.

The game is dark, the atmosphere is grim. The sound and the narration adds one more layer to that. It is not Diablo 2-dark or Diablo 1-dark, however. (Whatever that means for someone). It has its own style.

Yeah I'm tired of the Act I mise en scene only because I've played it a hundred times. It looks fine though, and the glimpses of the rest of the game look great. (And they've shown very very little, no? Some of Act II?)

They've shown a big portion of act 2 (Blizzcon 2011) and a very small portion of act 3.

The little that the Beta provides does not give you any real comparison on how the overall look will be.
I suggest you look at some of the skills videos. It's not extremely grim and dark like PoE but you can really see that it's Blizzard all the way. While it is more colorful than earlier iterations, the artstyle makes up for it. I was one of the haters when i saw the early videos and screenshots but after playing the beta there's no complaint.
Well, except that it would've been nice to have current gen graphics added.

I don't think I'd agree with this. The game is fun for sure. But with my time spent on the beta i feel that between the colorful effects of the attacks and the 'on screen' pops ups that congratulate you on mass carnage... I wouldn't call the atmosphere grim. If I had to compare itto movies: evil dead = diablo, evil dead 2 = diablo 2, army of darkness = diablo 3

I know I'm 90 pages late to this party, but is it just me, or is the health system kind of broken? I got a wizard to level 11/12ish, and I never felt like I was having much difficulty staying back and doing pretty massive damage. Mana (or whatever the equivalent is now) also refilled really fast. I rolled a Barbarian next and found that the damage I was doing wasn't really worth the added risk of being right next to a monster/boss doing that kind of damage (the king specifically). The rage meter refilled at a snails pace, so I kind of had to rely on the regular attack to get by during prolonged fights, and since the potions (and the timed attacks) are on a cool down, I was forced to run for my life quite a bit during the Leoric fight.

Am I missing something?

Thanks.

They're still giving out beta keys?

I got mine off of a twitter contest. The contest was retweeting a tweet :/

I'm not a fan of how Blizzard is handling beta invites. Every two bit gaming blog across the globe got like five codes each, so they're all beside themselves trying to accrue as many twitter followers and facebook friends as they can possibly get out of it. Then you've got people spamming twitter 24/7 with a link to a site that makes you do "offers" in exchange for "information about getting into the beta" (which means a virus and spam e-mails).

Yeah, I won my SC2 beta key from a Haiku contest on gaf... lol

I'm not really trying for the D3 beta, but I'd still like to try it without beating myself over beta contest and giveaways.

The beta is still going on? wow man. after maxing out all the classes 3 times I couldn't make myself do it anymore.

Give me your account.

I'll probably do a full run through of each class just to make sure I wouldn't rather play them in the retail version. I've rolled a Wizard and a Barb thus far, and unless someone explains to me how the barb isn't going to get slaughtered (now that potions can't be spammed) I'm probably ruling it out (even though I was a high level barb in D2).

Is there any, beta or not, footage of higher level play? It seems like everything out there is from the beta or super short snips from Blizzard. 2 abilities = not that exciting to watch

Hour of secret gameplay, starts at 13:40.
'Highlight' video of it once it gets processed. Just starts at the time I said.

I'm really bummed my mic was on the wrong input. I was enjoying myself a good deal. Lots of cursing too.
First time seeing those giant boars. OH man.

Grove @ 31:00. Wallers 53:50. Tinker 55:00. 57:50 Farmer. 1:13:30 Rathe. 1:19:00 Vortex. 1:23:00 Jailer (Use with the first link, Non-Highlight Times)

Some notes:
I died
Trees are good at hiding
Poison from trees deals a ton of damage
Vortex mob (Swings you around)
Wall mob (Makes walls)
Jailer mob (Rooted)
Another kind I don't remember

If one of you wants this taken down please PM me.
Presto

Well this is great. Thought I'd give the beta another spin since it's been months since I tried it.

- less stable
- more stuttering
- odd "bugs" I can't put my finger on.. that could relate to :
- shitty shitty decision of them with the whole online at all time / storing shit server side
- "you have been removed from the game", "lost connection to bnet", game goes back to main menu. My own connection didn't die.

Yeap. Can't wait.
