Sony says no to PS Vita price cut

Yoshida is a cool dude. Only a very cool person could spearhead a development of 2 new, expensive and exclusive IPs mid gen, when new IPs are bombing left and right. But I think The Last of Us and Beyond are going to pay out dividends.

It's kinda sad if you think about it. Damned if they do and damned if they don't type stuff. The game economy is completely messed up in it's sense of what people want.

Yosp is usually a straight shooter, would have preferred it if he'd told the truth and just said "we're 4 months in, the big Vita games just weren't at a place where we could show them on stage". Instead we get a bold faced lie... " we had all these games on the show floor for our newest piece of hardware, in retrospect you think we shoul'da showed some of 'em? well gosh Jimmy, I would never have thought of that!"

Liberation has to somehow differentiate itself from the annual main series for me to think of it as a big grab. Two Assassin's Creed in one year when I know the next one (which will no doubt improve on the concept) is very close by is a hard sell to make. Moreover it will likely just be outright inferior if it doesn't differentiate itself. For me all it needs to do is be a brutally hard Assassin's Creed, but I doubt that is going to happen.

On the go multiplayer might work for CoD and other games (like Madden), but that would be quite weak.

I'm wondering if a potential 'Vita phone' is perhaps causing them to rethink how they might potentially price the Vita moving forward.

Yoshida's Journal. June 6th, 2012: PSP carcass in alley this morning, hacked firmware on burst NAND.

This E3 is afraid of me. I have seen its true face. The conferences are extended gutters and the gutters are full of vaporware and when the drains finally scab over, all the gamers will drown.

The accumulated filth of all their DLC and PS3ports will foam up about their waists and all the gamers and Vitas will look up and shout "Save us!"... and I'll whisper "no."

Assasin's Creed III: Liberation, Soul Sacrifice, Gravity Daze, Little Big Planet Vita, PlayStation All Star's Battle Royale, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, Call of Duty DeClassified.

They only showed 3 of those at the press conference one of which was just a logo. If they have 25 games on they way they should be showing a bunch of games. The Vita is a laughing stock and people who don't follow it have no idea what is coming out aside from what is announced at E3.

The AC and CoD games could be big. But 2 big third party games in the next 6 months isn't so hot. Where is Borderlands 2? The developer publicly stated they wanted to make a Vita version - why didn't Sony try to make it happen? X-com, Resident Evil 6 are also pretty big games coming out this fall that possibly could have a Vita version (or spin off) but apparently won't. (Personally, for me, X-com on a portable would be a killer app)

And does anyone other than hard core Sony fans really care about those Sony games?

Gran Turismo Vita (a real one), KillZone Vita, God of War Vita, The Last of Us Vita, that Quantic Dreams game Vita. Those would be more appealing than a port of their Smash Bros clone or LBP (which I just didn't think was much fun).

They've basically put all their high profile games on the PS3 and continue to do so - that's the problem if they want the Vita to succeed.

A price cut only it's going to fix the problem. Ben Judd on 8-4 latest podcast said it best. Unless they can capture the attention of the random Kmart shopper on the regular it's sales is still a problem.

For all the people quoting all the games available, that's fine. That's what Sony should have done. A 90 second montage reel (as much as I hate those) would have shown it could be worth buying. As it stands to the casual observer it came across that they've given up on the thing.

Sony wants to make a profit off each unit sold. They're going to hold onto that belief until hardware becomes just cheap enough to make a profit. This is the first time they are being healthy about their ecosystem- despite what consumers may think.

there's nothing healthy about the ecosystem of the vita's sales.

Still money well spent for me so far. My guess is the price cut would be after the holidays. It should be a big boost for the system

It's enough that dedicated gaming handhelds are kinda struggling as it is as a viable gaming platform for the future, but THIS is really not helping the case :(

3DS on the other hand is doing a LOT better on all fronts!

If it gets a price cut it'll probably be a fire sale.

Third-parties are terrified of the thing because it's not selling, it's not selling because it's too expensive and has lackluster software, and Sony doesn't seem to give a fuck about solving either issue.

They've put themselves into some awkward positions over the last decade, but this is by far the worst. They don't have the money to buy their way out of this one, and E3 showed they clearly have no plan. I genuinely think there's a good chance this becomes Sony's Virtual Boy or TouchPad.

PSP + Vita is projected to sell 10m. Sony usually has a +/- 10% margin of error.

No, they think PSP+Vita will sell 16 million, with 6 million of that being the PSP...

(from the original article)

Worldwide PlayStation Vita sales were 1.8 million at the end of March 2012. Sony boss Kaz Hirai described the tally as "a good start". Sony expects there to be 16 million combined PSP and Vita sales this financial year.

Last month Sony announced a six week PS Vita price cut for France only. It will offer a rebate of €50 on the PlayStation Vita from 1st June to 15th July.

In March Hirai reasoned PSP would contribute roughly six million sales towards this. "A game platform, like Vita - the software is the key to success, how good the software is," Hirai said. "We have to reinforce the software area in order to improve the business, that is the basic line."

Yoshida is incompetent. He let MH go. He did not get massive Japanese SF support for the Via. I wish gaffers would stop worshipping him.

No point to cut price until they have substantial library to back it up anyway. Same people who complain about the price now will just complain about it has no games instead.

Otoh, still love mine.

Yep, like i said a few months back Sony will inevitably start a trend if they cut the Vita price. Having two big companies [Nintendo then Sony] do it for their new consoles back to back will give people the impetus not to buy any new consoles in the future, their thought process will be "it's going to get a price cut anyways so why bother spending money". It could lead to the downfall of the industry, i don't know why any serious gamer here in gaf will want that to happen. People have to start thinking farther out.

If they won't do a price cut, I just wish they would bundle in at least a 4GB Memory card. Even though I own one, a lot of gaming friends I know won't bite because of game pricing structure and memory card charges.

Sigh. I'm really, really excited about Gravity Rush. I really hope they come out soon with some really killer titles- I think Little Big Planet coming soon will also be wonderful. I'm also not sure if the cross-platform ideas will work unless the bundle packaging for both products of PS3/Vita owners makes sense and is affordable...

Sony should off shown Vita games at the conference but the fact is that only the 'hardcore' gamer follows E3. Would showing 30 games make a difference?

None of my gaming friends have a clue what E3 is.

I would have to think that the AC bundle will come with the Vita, Game, and a memory card for a price that is less than buying separately.

The PSP bundles were generally $30 higher than the base PSP price ($200 vs $170), so if the bundle follows that pricing, it wouldn't be too bad.

They are doing mem card and game bundles for the same price. It was mentioned when they showed off the EU bundles

And wait... gearbox wanted to do a vita version of borderlands borderlands 2 and its not happening? That's more upsetting to me then E3

They announced 2 bundles that comes with a card and a game.

I agree with the sentiment of what he is saying, in theory it is great. People would be willing to pay the current price in order to have a AAA gaming experience on a handheld, however this is reliant on having AAA games. It seems like they need to either make sure as hell a load of AAA titles appear or target the product at the lower end with a cheaper price, it seems at the moment though they have done neither.

I would expect them by now to have announced a Gran Turismo, Killzone and God of War (even if they are 2013) and move heaven and earth to get something like a Monster Hunter out ASAP.

Personally I love Vita and play it way more than I probably have any other handheld, but I do worry about the lack of titles shown. I can see why the general public would think twice before buying one.

At least he recognises the memory card issue too. I have no problem them using storage cards as at least you can keep expanding your storage, but if they are trying to encourage people to buy digitally then they seriously need to slash the cost of them or should have used Micro SD. I have filled my 16GB and now should be moving on to getting a 32GB too, but at £60 I haven't bothered. All it is achieving now is stopping me buying games digitally on a whim, which for them should be their main way of getting my money.

Knowing they needed to push the Vita the most do to being new, they didn't even care to at least show a reel/montage of these "25 new games". What? Can't waste 3 minutes on this? Excuses, excuses. As a Vita owner, I am very disappointed. This thing has potential and Sony is just messing it up in every possible moment. E3 should've been the place to highlight Vita the most and announce plans to reduce memory card prices.

Assasin's Creed III: Liberation, Soul Sacrifice, Gravity Daze, Little Big Planet Vita, PlayStation All Star's Battle Royale, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, Call of Duty DeClassified.

Good effort, but Sony only showed two of those games. For all people know, the Vita really has no games. They created that stigma.

No games, no price cut, no compelling reasons to purchase.

In the end, the Vita will just be another nail in the coffin of Sony. Maybe even one of the smaller ones.

SCEE is way ahead of you.

Over here, the RBS pack even includes a voucher for Resistance Retribution.

There's no point to a price cut without a flood of big sellers (or at least a few), its just going to be a very temporary fix otherwise.

He's right though, I don't think the hardware is overpriced either for the tech you are getting. Just gotta wait for the games to be made.

When Sony said the PSVita would be profitable within three years, this was based on projected sales.

I've posted a lot about Sony's lack of strategy in sales threads; but its obvious they never launched this thing with anything really in mind.

Its the wrong product. I just don't see how they can make money out of it.

Can't say I agree. Products have seen price drops since the beginning of time.
The issue is that you have to launch at the right price. 3DS/Vita didn't - although I think Vita is the right price for that product, its just the wrong product.

Thats what I think the main issue is, Vita is just wrong - its got too many additional features and is just that bit too powerful. It costs too much to produce and thus to buy.

We know now that £150 is pretty much the maximum for a handheld and I'd expect Nintendo to take on losses with new systems for the first year in the future.
