3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

Not from my experience of owning both Vita and 3DS. 3DS with the nyko powerpak beats the Vita by fucking miles.

A Vita playing PSP games will outlast a Nyko PowerPak'd 3DS by fucking days!

Fight stupid with stupid, I always say.

this, I usually get 4 hours of Vita play and my brightness has been the default brightness out of the box, which is close to max

Ya, I keep my Vita brightness down to about 30%, but I play at night mostly so that's plenty... To be fair, I keep the 3DS brightness up around 75% and sometimes higher, to compensate for the "dimming" I experience with the 3D...

Well, I don't have the 3DSXL (obviously) but my Vita gets about 33% better battery life than my 3DS, easy. I always get at least 4½ hours (and as many as 8 hours playing PSP games) out of my Vita. The 3DS is lucky to get 3h15m...

I get about 5 hours out of my 3ds, because I keep 3d halfed, wifi off, and the brightness in the mdidle

actually its about the same from what ive experienced
When actively using it, yes, it's very similar.

The Vita, however, handles sleep mode very well. I've found that the 3DS simply doesn't last in sleep mode. With Wi-fi enabled it will barely last a single night. Disabling it improves life a bit, but it still doesn't last as long as I'd hope. The Vita can stay in sleep mode for quite a long time, however, and still have juice to play.

The PSP Go is actually the most amazing example of this. I've been collecting handhelds lately and playing lots of different systems and my Go has been in sleep mode for about a month. I checked yesterday, however, and the battery is still at two bars (after waiting for a bit to make sure it was accurate). That thing lasts for an insanely long time in sleep mode.

Now, this isn't a HUGE deal when you have your power source handy, but there have been times when I just want to set a game down and pick it up later that day and the 3DS isn't as well suited to that as I would like.

I expect a price drop, like japan got......

either way the point still stands. They would of ajcked the price more than what it was worth on the open market

No they wouldn't have. Including an AC adapter doesn't mean shit.

Look at the USA price. We are being ripped off.

5 Hours! I don't think I could get that much play time out of mine no matter how I configured it... You must have got a balls battery!

This is true. I've gotten into the habit of putting my 3DS on the cradle whenever I'm not using it, where I only throw my Vita on the cradle if the battery indicator is down to 25%, which is the same thing I do with my PSPgo.

aside @ dark10x: If you haven't picked up a PSPgo cradle yet, I highly recommend it. They're dirt cheap out there now, and playing PSP games with the DS3 on a TV is a treat...

maybe I did get lucky, who knows. My vita gets me around the same while playing.

Also since I play mostly ds titles now, the 3ds xl will be welcome since it brings the battery to about where the ds lite was

Obviously it did mean shit otherwise we wouldnt be having this discussion about why they didnt include it

They said it was a price concern

Yeah. You believe that corporate bullshit?

Firstly you state they took it out so they could charge £10 lower for the console itself, benefiting consumers (just like Nintendo stated). This in itself doesn't make any sense, because:

1. They don't set the sale price. Retailers do. Hence why it's one hundred and eighty fucking quid.

2. The standalone charger is going to retail for £11.99 in stores.

So effectively, we're not only paying a ridiculous price in the first place compared to elsewhere, but the average consumer will end up paying at least eight quid more. If they go into GAME, they will pay even more to get the adapter (you can fucking guarantee GAME will try and sell them to every buyer regardless of them owning a 3DS previously/in the same household or not), and get ripped off. They wouldn't be paying £10 less. They'd be paying £190.

Try and defend that.

edit: confirmed it with a mate who works at GAME. They're going to be encouraged and monitored on AC adapter upsells. So that means they'll be pushing EVERY SINGLE BUYER to buy one. Got one already in your home? Who gives a shit, they'll still push them - rendering Nintendo's excuse as absolutely fucking pointless.

are you really trying to argue that this is anything other than greedy corporate penny pinching? Listen, Nintendo isn't your friend. They didn't baptize your first born. They're not your godparents, they don't care if you walk out and get hit by a car tomorrow. They don't even care that much. If you're legitimately arguing that not including the AC Adapter is some consumer-friendly move to help the Japanese save money, I can't help but feel embarrassed for you on a very deep level. That shit is warped.

Sarcasm? Vita's battery life is significantly better than either 3DS model.

I consider the Vita's battery life to be pretty good myself, especially since the Vita handles sleep mode really well unlike the 3ds, as dark10x mentioned above. However the vid I posted above shows that in gaming use, the 3DS XL battery life has been improved, and seems to be a notch above the Vita's :

3DS : 3:51
Vita : 4:27
3DS XL : 4:47

These are on max settings, but it could always vary, I guess, depending on how you are using the console.

its penny pinching, its corporate greed, but maybe, just maybe, its a good thing as well.

I was only talking about europe.

In japan, there isnt an excuse.

But I figure nintendos thinking is the 3ds has a stranglehold on japan anyway, so what does it matter. They can do whatever and get away with it

unfair, 3DS XL test was on black background, Vita test was on a graphically intense background. Test failure ;)

haha, i laughed so hard because I just read this in the voice of a Monty Python character lol

I was thinking about the choice to get it seperately

I know for me. I have 5 chargers that would work, I dont need another

That's fine for you.

What about the hundreds upon hundreds of casuals who go into GAME, Gamestation etc in the UK, and get upsold on an AC Adapter for £12, regardless of whether they already have one at home or not, and without the staff telling them so (they need those upsells to hit targets).

It's absolute thievery. You are absolutely kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

Isnt that game,gamestation, ect fault?

I can go a few days without charging my Vita. But, I need to charge my 3ds every night, and I play with 3D off.

disable wifi/streetpass if you want more 'idle battery'. Streetpass is why 3ds can barely last 2-3 days without a charge (with no play).

It's annoying, but man do i like streetpass. So addicting lol.

That's as much about retail greed as it is Nintendo's (although I accept its bullshit from Nintendo why that's happening).

For me the AC adapter situation is indefensible and there is no excuse Nintendo can provide that hides that. But rather than trying to defend the indefensible, i think the issue comes down to personal choice and decision making. Im still going to buy a 3DS XL because to me, the 90p it cost me to buy a new AC adapter isn't an issue or a hinderance. People do have a choice over this stuff and its very easy to say "No thank you" to Nintendo if people feel that strongly about it. But personally speaking, the AC adapter issue is largely irrelevant. To me, anyway.

Trying to suggest Nintendo are leaving out the charger for the good will of anybody though.. blimey.

Yeah a lot of people seem to skate over that but I find that is an important feature, the Vita has amazing stanby time.

Agreed.

I have the Nyko battery in my 3DS which helps a lot but it adds a lot of bulk to the system. I'm looking forward to having less bulk with the 3DS XL oddly enough. I think the XL will actually be lighter than the 3DS with the Nyko battery.

That's not bad for the battery life. It was estimated to be between 3.5 to 6.5 hrs, right? I'm assuming that's only for 3DS games and 6.5 being on lowest settings (3D off, lowest brightness/power save mode on, no wifi, etc.), meaning that DS games could last 6.5 +. I wonder how much longer after 6.5 it will last, and how long it would last playing Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 on highest brightness and on largest 1:1 mode. I can't wait!

I'm more hyped for the 3DS XL than I am of the idea of a new next gen console, and I already own a 3DS. I can't explain it. Maybe because I want to replay my 3DS library on the new handheld: Super Mario 3D Land, Ocarina of Time 3D, Star Fox 64 3D, Kid Icarus Uprising, Resident Evil Revelaitons, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, Mario Kart 7, Tales of the Abyss, Ghost Recon, Metal Gear Solid 3D and after next week, Heroes of Ruin.

I feel the same way. All the way up till E3 I was dying to see Wii U news and games, and I was sort of letdown. Although, I still felt I would buy the console at launch if it were affordable ($250-$300) and in black (not settling for white). Now, with the recent announcement of the 3DS XL, my hype has transferred over to the 3DS and I no longer care for the Wii U, and I think it's a combination of a gaming platform that I already own and looking for a better experience with it through the larger screens and slightly improved battery life, as opposed to a console whose current library doesn't interest me, coupled with the lack of hype in regards to announcement of future titles.

I might actually have a chance to play the Wii U today, they're doing some presentation here in Miami, but I'm waiting on my friend's feedback to see where the event is taking place, and if our names were even put down for attendance. And I find myself indifferent about playing it. I just haven't seen anything that particularly impresses me. The most impressive thing I've seen so far is the co-op gameplay in Rayman Legends where the player on the Game Pad is hitting objects to the beat of the fast-paced rock-n-roll music to help the players on the main screen navigate to the end of the level; that just looked awesome.

If it can go 4:47 at max I would like to know if it can be longer than the 6.5h estimation with light at level 1 and 2. 3ds goes over 5 hours with this setting.

What I'd really like to see is a side-by-side comparison of a 3DS XL running a DS game in 1:1 mode and a DSi and/or DS Lite. Or just some indication of how the image sizes will compare at 1:1. I'm really hoping it's as big as on a Lite if not bigger. My biggest gripe about my 3DS is how terrible DS games look compared to how they were on my DSi's larger sharp screens.

I really don't get this, I think that the DS games look better on the 3DS than on a DS. But that is only me thinking so..

I'm hoping some "trade-up" deals start appearing, because 50 bucks at GameStop is horrendous. I'm hoping to get at least 85 out of it. I could use Amazon, but I don't really want to ship my 3DS off somewhere.

Pixel density is almost the same as the DSi (original, not XL), so it'll look like that.

For anyone wondering about 1:1 sizes...

I believe that 1:1 mode for GBA and likely GB/C games is the same size as they are on the GBA/SP screen (PPI is almost identical)

The same goes for 1:1 DS games being almost identical to DSi screens

played with the 3ds ll last week. it really feels so much better than the old 3ds. the colors, the brightness... everything. if you dont have a 3ds and planning to buy one, wait for ll. except you have small hands. if you got big ones, its not even a choice anymore...

Thanks, sounds amazing. I was actually really surprised at how much of a difference the screen size made when going from DS Lite to DSi.

As much as I loved my GBm, I just never could get used to the tiny DPI on DS games and ended up playing most DS games in the nasty filtered stretch mode on 3DS.

Out of the blue, I have to get 3 new hardware this year. 3DS XL, PS3 Superslim, WiiU. -_-

Haha, yep. This year is proving to be surprisingly expensive.

3DS XL and PS3 SSlim for me too. I've got a baby girl due in November which makes the decision to wait for Wii U a good 6 months or so easier, but I want a Nexus 7 as well now so..

God damn you, technology.
