The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

I picked up Yesterday on the app store today and it got me thinking:

I really wonder why we are not seeing more old PC adventure games on the iPad these days...a few years ago I was sure that by now we would have games like Full Throttle, Leisure Suit Larry, The Longest Journey, etc... on iOS in some way (even if they are not HD remakes like Monkey Island).

There are some I missed out on (Longest Journey) that I would love to play and some I have fond memories of and would just like to have nostalgia on hand wherever I go (Full Throttle).

Seems like such a missed opportunity, but at least we are getting Baldurs Gate soon and hopefully Torment to follow soon after.

hi guys!

if you like puzzle games, grab a promo code for our new game Puppy's Plaything. It would be nice if you post your impressions about the game in this thread after you played for a while.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it, but in this case you'd probably want feedback on your game.
Yep. They're all gone, and it looks like lurkers got 'em.

Next time definitely put them in email tags so that the community can give you feedback on your game.

There's always SCUMMVM if you don't mind jailbreaking.

I wish there was a way to create groups for your friends list in GC, or at least create nicknames. I just lose track and don't know from where I know each person... kinda annoying.

Sadly Apple's vision for Game Center doesn't jive with the usual gaming social network mentality, eg. in Apple's world you only have real life buddies on your list, with no nicknames, and no Internet friends.
Who needs groups when you know everyone IRL? Hmmm?
I agree with you though.

GameCenter needs major improvements and tweaks-I was hoping this was going to be part of iOS 6, but sadly does't look like it...

thank you.
I watched the video.

Love the Earthbound and other homaging, though I'm not quite sure what to make of the mechanics.

Many thanks for the codes, though as others have mentioned it's a shame many seem to have gone to lurkers.

I've given the game a good go - it's the only game of this kind I've seen on iOS which is surprising, but there's definitely something fun about trying to trace your route across the ice and trying to pick everything up in as little moves as possible :)

Unfortunately I'm not very good at it though - the only achievement I've got so far is the one for using a hint! (great idea by the way, not only is it very useful, it also gives you a good insight into how to play the more challenging later levels). All in all I like it, though I wish I was better at it. :)

Looks like the next asynchronous strategy game is going to be Rad Soldiers from the developers (or publisher, not sure which) of Brink. The game looks promising and it is going to released in Canada first to test servers and such before a release elsewhere. I think the Canada release is coming up sometime soon so let us know how it is Canada GAF. I found Outwitters fun but I was slightly disappointed. Hopefully this scratches that Hero Academy itch.

The in-app purchases on the itunes page have me worried... what's that all about?

It's because you can have abilities (like the special abilities in Dungeon Raid). They can be unlocked as you play and battle opponents or you can buy them directly with "RAM". The game doesn't give you much ram in fact. If you want more, you purchase it.

Personally it hasn't interfere with my pleasure, I like to actually unlock the abilities.

I'm a huge fan of Dungeon Raid so welcome any new/improved alternative... but fucking hell does WOPR have an utterly dreadful art style :(

A friend recommended me the Monkey Island series games, are they actually fun on the iPad?

And which one should I get?

the new 3D Telltale Games ones

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/monkey-island-tales-1-hd/id406248957?mt=8

Or the original Lucasarts ones?

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/secret-monkey-island-special/id390454624?mt=8

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/monkey-island-2-special-edition/id376928597?mt=8

This is so confusing!

It's really easy. The original ones. With the original graphics.

Sooooo do you like? :-)

Are there different classes and builds you can do like in Dungeon Raid?

Doesn't seem to be. No classes but you upgrade the abilities you buy/unlock. Costs RAM points though. :/
Still, there's plenty of fun to have, I played countless hours of Dungeon Raid without minding the classes :P

thank you and have fun!

I have played through 10 stages in "First Adventures" and I have enjoyed what I have played. I like the scuff marks that form across the ice as the puppy traverses the environment; they represent nice visual detail and help the player remember their previous paths. Everything I have seen so far otherwise looks simple and colorful. The different terrains that pop up and halt the puppy's path are a nice touch and I look forward to seeing what else develops to shake up the gameplay. The controls are simple and easy to grasp. Kids should find a nice balance between accessibility and challenge.

I almost feel like there should be a time limit within the stages though. Although the game is obviously intended for a younger audience, it seems almost too easy sometimes.

The interface seems friendly enough and should be familiar enough to anyone who has played Angry Birds.

My only real criticism thus far is the sound. Although the music is acceptable, I sort of feel that it is just "there." It sounds repetitious and falls short of the rest of the package. It does not really have any personality to it.

I hope my feedback was okay.

WarGames is awesome, even after playing so much DR. Can't believe this is a licensed game! Love the scanline option.

I loved the movie when I was a teen but this game didn't look like much so I dodged it, but now all you guys are saying it's good so I'm gonna have to try it.

I think I'm not far off finishing WarGames on Normal. Once you get a certain powerup it gets pretty easy to dodge basically anything :/

The Act is currently on sale for $1.

It's quite short and doesn't have much in the way of gameplay (it's a port of an unreleased Dragon's Lair-esque arcade game controlled entirely with left/right swipes), but at that price, it's worth checking out just for the animation.

I enjoyed this very, very much. I mean, okay, it's not much of a game, it's very short, and the mechanics are as frustrating as a good laserdisc game should be. But, goddammit, it is charming and that's something we don't see much of anymore. Good old fashioned charm.

I wish I played this at California Extreme last year. They had the arcade version and it always attracted crowds, but I didn't have the patience to wait to play it for some reason, lol.

So I got a Canadian iTunes account so that I could play in the RAD Soldiers open beta and this game is pretty awesome. It's asynchronous TBS with single player challenges, that are pretty tough, and multiplayer. You gain coins as you play, yes there are IAP, that you can spend on new units and weapons for them. Each unit has two special abilities and can equip any weapon you purchase for them. The graphics are fantastic, sound and presentation are top notch. I'll give more impressions once I play some multiplayer but I think a lot of people will like this once it actually releases.

edit: That's cool, you get coins for every turn taken in multiplayer and it looks like the winner receives additional coins based off of how many kills you have?

thank you Gaaraz!

don't stop playing, you get a feeling for it after a while. in later chapters there will be more arcade elements (bats and whirlwinds) which alter the game experience a bit. :)

great feedback! thank you!

I love the music and sfx in the game, but as always, such things are subject to ones own personal taste. ;)

later stages see harder levels. once you come to shifting icecubes around, it gets more complex. and, as I said in the post above, we added arcade elements to later chapters to make gameplay more interesting.

another plan of ours is to add a new "darkness" chapter for update 1.2, so stay tuned.

(btw: 1.1 is already uploaded, a new chapter + bonus stages :))

If anyone is playing Pocket Heroes add me, please. Just picked it up and looking to play. I'll play any class, doesn't matter.

GC: Kosh One

Argh! I was so, so looking forward to this game, and was so, so let down when I saw it was for Canada only right now. Not going to create a Canadian account, but I do very much look forward to the worldwide release. The guys making it sound like they've done their best to offer a fair free-to-play game.

On a separate note, I paid the Square tax and bought FFT, and I'm pretty damned glad I did. It does lag a little bit during spell casting, but the story is so very good thus far. After playing Tactics Ogre, I didn't think anything could compare, but it looks like they put the same love and care into this as well. I'm guessing Smith did the translation?

I have played some multiplayer now and RAD Soldiers is my favorite asynchronous game since Hero Academy, which is probably my favorite iOS game. I was wrong about units being able to equip any weapon, the weapons can only be used by certain classes. Coin seems to be flowing pretty freely especially since you get free coins for every multiplayer move played. For multiplayer you get to choose the amount of team points you want to play with (12, 16, 20) which determines the size and load out of your teams. Bigger weapons cost more points to equip so that should keep the gameplay balanced. Equipping a soldier with a Gatling gun will cost as much as equipping two scouts with uzis so there are lots of options as far as your team goes. Also multiplayer seems to be a combination of deathmatch and king of the hill. You battle to control a certain area after five turns and whoever holds it wins. The five turn limit keeps the game moving fast and means you can't just sit in a corner and try to wait your opponent out.

edit: Just won my first game. At the end a large pot of coins is divided up among the winner and loser in addition to the free gold you get every turn. It was something like 80% to 20%. Your units also gain experience but I'm not sure what it means once they level up. Your commander also levels up and gains new abilities as you play.
