Shane Satterfield: Wii U will cost $299

Again, not at all. Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 look more impressive than Pikimin 3.

What you are about to hear comes from someone who will defend, and perhaps even hyperbolize at times, the graphical prowess of these two games on end - the galaxy titles don't hold a candle (technically speaking) to the purported Wii up-port Pikmin 3. The galaxy games are technically impressive only when judged with the target hardware in mind. Emulating DOT 3 bump maps and rim lighting on Wii HW is nothing short of a crowning achievement, not to mention maintaining all these effects and more at a buttery smooth 60 fps.

As amazing as these games look, and as equally underwhelming as the E3 Pikmin 3 build appears, at no point did I say to myself "looks about as impressive as a high-end Wii game." To my knowledge, the galaxy games (or any Wii game pushing the boundaries of hte system) do not support anything resembling actual DOF (just strategic blurring at times to simulate the effect), global lighting, soft shadowing (as opposed to stencil shadows), or advanced shaders.

Well honestly, buying at launch is usually a surefire way to get burned. Most of the time it's better to way 6 months to see how a system performs.

absolutely. so i don't really get the complaints about this launch; almost all of them suck, so why are people complaining? i don't see why we're faulting Nintendo for sticking to the trend. it's not a good trend, sure, but it's what everyone else does.

and when it comes down to it, that's still a better launch than any last gen console or any recent handheld. it's not even close, and it's not even subjective.

Nice price if true, but still gonna wait until better games come out on it, in the mean time, I got a backlog of games needed to be finished on PS3/Wii/PSP/NDS/PC.

So if WiiU $299.99, an extra WiiU controller $99-$129?

Games would get the $59.99 treatment I guess

I would be pleased if Wii U does go for $299.

As far as the launch lineup goes, I find it to be pretty good and we'll be getting some new downloadable games as well. I'm currently most interested in Pikmin 3, Darksiders 2, ZombiU, Rayman Legends, and New Super Mario Bros. U, and of course, P-100. Assassin's Creed 3, Aliens: Colonial Marines, and Tank!Tank!Tank! are maybes at this point (Namco Bandai, give T!T!T! online play damn it!)

$300 is a good price for launching a console. New Super Mario Bros Wii U will be a system seller. As for myself, I might not get it at launch. I never had any console at launch and I have more things to do this year.

same here, I usually wait for more games to appear, anyways I'll be buying a 3DS XL later this year so my money will be spent on that

People who currently own a 360 and/or PS3 think the lineup is bad yes... Wii only owners have a lot to look forward to however.

I own all systems and I think the line up is solid - although we should not forget that they part of a launch window and not launch day.

I don't trust Shane more than anybody else who says 300$. And I'll stay out of this thread because seeing some of the posts I know which direction this thread will take :lol

$299? Fair price. My gaming budget is a bit low though. I got a Vita for effectively $199 recently. (Gamestop $50 gift card with Vita purchase). Upcoming Vita and 3DS games, P4:Arena, and my Wii60 backlog will be eating my gaming time and/or money for the next several months. I'm leaning strongly toward waiting a few months before buying.

Sold.

Also, didn't take long for the threadcrapping to begin.

There was an interview/quote from Reggie that mentioned it was more of a later launch window game, into March+. I don't have it on me and am too lazy to find it

He said launch window was 3-4 months, so if it comes out November launch window will extend to February or early March.

Yeah, but launch window is still the first four months on the market, so it would still be a few months after launch at the latest.

Probably March yeah. I wish i remember what interview it was from, might have been with keigley or maybe just an article quote, i forget.

Great user name.. hehe

The reason for the name is because I was too hyped for TP during 2004-2005 and it was the first time I decided to join the gamespot forum with that name. When I registered for GAF I decided to keep just for consistency. Was it a mistake? Sure, but what on earth does that have to do with what I just said.

What is the official launch line-up?

http://www.slashgear.com/nintendo-announces-wii-u-launch-titles-05232202/

Where is the next evolution of Mario? Where's Smash? Why isn't some older, dormant franchise rebooted Kid Icarus style but for launch? Maybe a new, core Nintendo IP? Or dare I suggest a proper, solid JRPG?

The only two games that look interesting, and I'd buy for sure are the 2D mario and Rayman Legends. I'd pay full price for these games, but I don't consider them system-sellers.

Which, aside from what crazy people say, is one of the best launch line-ups in a while.

Maybe for you. I don't see a single launch game on there that feels like a full-fledged, next-gen killer app or gives me the same "gotta have it" feeling that past launch games have given me. It's a shame too cause Nintendo is the only company I would day-1 from considering their quality control when it comes to bugs and overall console longevity.

Oh well. Late adopters tend to get more bang for their buck and more options to choose from.

Reposting my prediction spectrum.

Very Pessimistic: >$350
Pessimistic: >$300
Neutral: $300, no pack-in game
Optimistic: $300, pack-in Nintendoland
Very optimistic: <$300

I'm a very optimistic person. Nintendo can't afford to have this machine sit on shelves only to be followed by a massive price drop, like the 3DS did. They should try and price the Wii U as low as they can afford. I still think it'll be $250 with no pack in.

For me, there are two games that do this. Pikmin 3 and P-100 (admittedly both are launch window).

I'm really excited for NSMB U, but it's hard to distance itself from its NSMB brand, even though it looks pretty great. And Rayman Legends seems quite excellent; the only reason I would consider not day-1'ing is because Ubisoft. It'll drop to $30 in 2 months or less.

HD (and qHD) launch window lineups:

This thread devolved into list warz within two pages. That may be a record.

$300 seems like a fair price for the system.

Nice price, but other than Mario, there isn't a single game I'm remotely interested in.

So.. we shall see what rolls around this holiday.

This is the boat I find myself in as well. I'll buy one because I buy every console, but the pickings seem a bit slim at launch.

Does he own a Vita, or have he said that he is concidered buying one?
I can't think of a prominent Gaffer more in love with Vita than Shidoshi. I believe at one point he said something to the effect of the platform dying would make him want to quit gaming.*

*I still <3 u Shidoshi. Moar WAHP plz!

The problem with this line-up is that the multi-platform games which all sound like big gets are going to be on par with the 360/PS3 versions, with slight improvements in visuals for a few or tacked-on pad functionality. Now if the Wii U was a 'true' next-gen leap in terms of hardware specs, people wouldn't be ignoring these multi-platform games when discussing the launch line-up. You know what I mean? like my 3 year old pc will probably run all those multi-plats better than the Wii U and have better online functionality. If the Wii U was a full leap technically that wouldn't be the case and i'd definitely be more inclined to purchase these multi-plats for it rather than my PC (or 360/PS3 if i had one).

$299.99 is what i expect. it might not have nintendo land packed in (although it should!) but it'll have a bunch of channels and other bullshit like face raiders to placate people for a couple of minutes.

This is a good price, considering the Wii U is 3-4x more powerful than the PS3/360, it's good.

But why are their people like "I was expecting $200 or $250 >.<" really?, I can bet you same people would buy the PS4 and 720 if it was $400.

Where did this multiplier come from?

Tbh it's always pretty simple when using scientific methods to guage the success of a Nintendo console. They always need either a Mario or am Zelda game, otherwise everyone would be wtf.
