Btw. the NBA owners are absolutely crazy. Dropping out of the Olympics would be the stupidiest thing ever.

Every German media outlet is reporting about the Dream Team and they presenting LBJ / Kobe as fucking legends. They are THE attraction of the Olympics. No other sport without a German entry is getting that much coverage, most German athletes arent even getting the same exposure the Dream Team is getting.

The owners do present an interesting argument though, there is a ton of money in the olympics yet if a basketball player gets hurt it's their NBA team that has to continue to pay for their contract.
 
One network here is airing female Weight Lifting.

This event makes me nervous as hell. Fucking up essentially means ending up horribly injured.

But they should see it as giant advertisment for the NBA. Arent the players insured anyway? In Football the FIFA / UEFA are insuring the players against injury and will pay for their contract if a player gets hurt.

NBA owners whine about everything. These players bring them hundreds of millions and they pay most of these guys a small fraction of that.

James Dolan didn't want to pay Lin 30 mil + the 28 mil luxury tax when Lin brought in 600 million. Think about that for a second....

Think about it. If a player suffers a career-ending injury while playing for his country, yeah insurance will pay the rest of his contract. But you lose someone who's likely the best player on your team with no compensation. Even if there aren't any major injuries, there will be the added fatigue from not having had a proper offseason to rest and recuperate.

Far be it from me to side with the owners when you talk about players vs owners, but the Olympics ARE a bit exploitative when you really look at it. It's ridiculous that people killed Ray Allen and Dwyane Wade for saying that Olympians should be compensated when the Olympics are a for-profit business and make money hand over fist.

They want to make the FIBA world championship the basketball equivalent of the World Cup. Why let the IOC make all the money and not take any risk? Besides, the Olympic format sucks. Only 12 teams can qualify and one of them has to be reserved for the host nation. Some legitimately good teams are not playing in the Olympics. Turkey won the silver medal in 2010 and they are not even playing here.

3 is the most, though you can do less than that. For example, if you block a spike, that would just be 1.

Nobody outside the few basketball nations care about the FIBA World Cup.

The Olympics is a world stage, a huge platform to advertise your sport to a much, much wider audience. They should be used to further developing games such as basketball.

Olympic basketball is FIBA endorsed. If they didn't care about it, they would withdraw.

Mh that's an interesting concept. That could work if they invest and promote it the right way, but they need to make sure that it gets enough TV coverage in every important country. But i believe that basketball just isnt there yet, having two good teams (USA and Spain) isnt enough for a World Cup. France, Germany, UK, Brazil, Italy, China wourld need to catch up for it to work.

Well, if everything goes like it looks like it will all of the best players will be playing in the FIBA World Cup, and that's gonna be a huge event held every four years as well. Non-American nations hold it in higher esteem than Olympic basketball already anyway, much like tennis fans don't really care that much about Olympic tennis or football fans regard FIFA World Cup more highly than Olympic competition. Or do you think that the FIFA World Cup isn't a world stage? And as far as advertising your sport, how can a shared platform with all of these other sports possibly be better than a huge international event focusing just on basketball?

The TV coverage is not there yet but it is getting there.

According to FIBA secretary general Patrick Baumann, the TV ratings for the 2010 championship exceeded the 2006 FIBA World Championship's and the EuroBasket 2009 numbers, with an expected audience of one billion people in 200 countries, while 30 million people visited the official website.

The preliminary round game between China and Greece was watched by around 65 million Chinese, while the three games of Lithuania topped the annual ratings in Lithuania, beating the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final.

Exactly. Nobody's talking about the Argentina vs Lithuania match right now even though they are two very good teams.

Well I can't speak for anyone else. But my interest is limited to the Olympics alone. My interest could definitely spread to the NBA and FIBA WC, but for that to happen, it would need to start with the Olympics.
 
I'm not saying that they shouldnt pursue a World Cup that's similar to the FIFA one. But i do believe that they still need to expand their fan base before a World Cup can really take off. The Olympics are easily the best venue to reach NEW fans and to excite people for the sport.
 
At the very least, I'll come away from these Olympics with a new-found appreciation for both archery and weightlifting. I've enjoyed plenty of other sports already, but I've never followed those at all and found them fascinating to watch.

Outside of America, FIBA is more prestigious than the Olympics. And if all of the best NBA players chose the World Cup over the Olympics, American perception would instantly follow suit.

Sad but true. Champions League is the pinnacle of football at the moment. All the best players, all the best teams.

I dunno, to use hockey as an example, none of the previous attempts to create a hockey tournament has ever gained traction, but Olympic hockey is a huge deal for every country, to the point where they even suspend the NHL season for it.

Sure, but hockey is not nearly as popular as basketball. I'd say that it's a safe bet that if the best players choose to adopt it and it's sufficiently promoted, the FIBA World Cup will be wildly successful. Basketball and soccer share a lot of universally appealing common traits that something like hockey doesn't, mostly in cost of entry and being lighter-contact sports. Obviously FIFA can stand on its own because soccer is so ubiquitous, but people that don't think that FIBA can do the same are probably grossly underestimating the growth and popularity of basketball across the globe.
