IGN: ""How Sony Won Gamescom Before It Even Started"

i dont see anybody doing what you're saying they're doing; what i see is people calling shit corporate cheerleading out.

the hilarity of seeing this statement on GAF is almost unbearable for my sides.

Come on, the entire board is BUILT around three teams doing EXACTLY THIS.

Bu bu bu bu it's IGN! can't be rolled out as any sort of defense either because i doubt ANYONE on this board takes them seriously.

End of the line is : IGN staff member posts something that wouldn't look out of place on GAF, GAF members finger wag "oh corporate cheerleading" then vanishes in to a blackhole of hypocrisy

Just to immortalise it:

Tell me why
Ain't nothing but a heartache
Tell me why
Ain't nothing but a mistake
Tell me why
I never wanna hear you say
I want it that way

"Declining sales of game consoles #150; including Sony's PlayStation 3 – and LCD TVs left the company hurting, and has pushed Tokyo-based Sony to lower its earnings forecast by 10 billion yen through March 2013."

Sony hasn't won shit.

Was that really necessary? It's just going to derail the thread. This is about sony's great gamescon conference. Not about whatever financial troubles they might be having

LOL @ Ppl saying that there is no one trying to downplay Sony's conference I mean:

This is the second most disgustingly sycophantic gaming article I've ever read*. The highlights/lowlights for me, in bold:

There isn't a sign of independent thought in here, its pure gush and adoration. Not a single question, considered observation or any sign of actual journalism can be detected within.

Sony have certainly delivered a better show that their E3 shambles (in fairness, everyone was a shambles this E3), but this article isn't positive feedback or commentary, its gushing adoration by a love-struck Sony fanboy.

*Nothing will ever take your crown, MacWorld.

Agreed. Although I find nothing wrong with articles like this as long as there is a balance. What's wrong with opinionated editorials? (redundant I know)

Perspective isn't always necessary, but it sure can be helpful when considering anything in life.

So we hold IGN to the level of message board posts. Wow that's low man. Also I would call anyone out who said their "heart belongs to a company" because that's fucking creepy.

if you're gonna quote me, quote me - at least aim your personal insults right. feel free to point out the specifics of my hypocrisy while you're at it.

are you saying IGN is made of these 3 teams (clearly the case) and GAF is the exact same? seriously?

Pretty much yeah. Well for a large part at least. But I'd say four teams when you account for the "master race" guys on here.

Get those clicks IGN, get those precious little clicks you work so hard for.

**Edit** I love Sony, but this article is dumb as shit. If you have any remote interest in the Black Ops game for Vita, you are either blind, deaf, or dumb. Puppeteer was the only game that truly excited me in the press conference and the buy 1 get both deal is awesome too. I personally thing MS has been slacking hard the past 2 years and Sony has been way better, but they are still in third even if it is just barely. I would hope MS is taking notes from Sony with exclusive titles for next gen, because personally, I don't give a shit about exclusive DLC.

LOL @ Ppl saying that there is no one trying to downplay Sony's conference I mean:

Wow. Yeah, that's the tone of the thread alright. We all came to bash Sony. Quoting the handful of trolls would be reasonable. Acting like this is some kind of Hate thread is crazy town. You're my butterfly, sugar, baby.

That last part does ring true, but people do have the right mindset, imo, to expect more from journalists. That really was a hard conference to not be impressed by, but the article does seem to be doing its job at garnering attention.

I think some of the criticism in this thread comes from people who don't like hearing that the Vita & Sony at large are offering a lot of strong exclusive games over the next twelve months whereas the Wii-U is looking iffy and the 360 has little new to excite some over.

The editorial is definitely cheerleading a bit... but the guy has a lot of evidence from yesterday to back it up. I mean, really.

How dare you forget the two most annoying sides, the so-called Master Race and worshippers at the cult of Jobs.

Serious question, but could you point out those people because that not even close to what I'm seeing people responding to...

How dare you forget the two most annoying sides, the so-called Master Race and worshippers at the cult of Jobs.

Well to be fair, the cult of Jobs guys are getting shit on 99.9% percent of the time in this place, instead of them being the ones attacking others.

I was pointing at GAF in general, not you specifically - i see several people in this thread who'd be quite happy in other threads to shill away for their personal choice of console (Hi again, Brazil!)

Yes, i'm saying that the vast majority of GAF have a preference of one of the three companies and they'll go at it tooth and nail based on what their favourite company does with their hardware choices or software exclusivities. It's not everyone but it's a damned big slice of what makes up the community here.

We've been around here long enough - you -know- this is true deep down.

The point was that if we're going to start talking about things looking like PR or Shit Corporate Cheerleading - from GAF MEMBERS of all people - then collectively we're no better than IGN and -no- i don't hold IGN in any higher regard, or their staff members, beyond anyone on this board.

Well that's depressing. At that point, they serve no purpose.

fair enough...but i'd argue degrees.

like, everyone has their formats of preference, even master race (ugh) has its points in that any multi-plat game i can get on PC, i usually will, for technical/freedom kinda reasons. and when you take typical offerings and company/game design philosophy into mind, i absolutely get it.

but we have waves of people who lose sleep over sales-age, who proudly wear camp badges, and one big difference with GAF in my mind is that eventually these people usually get banned, instead of, say, writing awful pieces for IGN for the faithful to come infect GAF with.

ps i would posit that we are capable of having a higher level of technical discussion here on GAF than IGN and most other corners, hence why i celebrate this joint.

They need games that will sell big numbers and move hardware, not games that might be good quality.

Well, I think a lot of people believe some of those games will sell big numbers but I also think it's perfectly reasonable to just be excited by what was shown because those games looked so good and fresh.

As a gamer I want new & good games to regularly pop up. I also want these companies to do well enough to thrive and make more and take bigger risks, but I think the content alone was enough to excite a lot of people yesterday.

Well that's depressing. At that point, they serve no purpose

i don't read gaming media at all and listen to but two pod casts (8-4 / RSG) but that's mainly because i know the people who do them.

There's good journalism out there but i don't see it in IGN, Kotaku, etc. For me, yes, they have zero purpose. I don't care what their opinions are, i don't care what their review scores are, and the most i need to see about a game i'd likely see at either game shows or from bits and bobs through general gaf news filtration.

The problem is there's little/no journalism out there - there's some GREAT stuff done by a handful of writers but it's so few and far between. The other problem i have is that i see gaming taste as being -deeply- personalised - akin to musical taste in that there's a massive array of what people like and don't like. So general commentary and opinion pieces are just another puff of air farting into a hurricane of words i have zero interest in.

Am I the only one who feels that many of IGN articles including their reviews are more like opinion pieces and not proper journalistic write ups?

The Sony which seems to be forgotten: Getting every thirdparty support they want.

The Sony nowadays: They are getting CoD. Holy crap.

plenty of shrills and fanatics exist here. only the ones that get shitty with other people usually get banned. if you banned everyone that swayed to a certain side you wouldn't have a forum anymore

ive seen fanbodys go in hard for their company and take a (rightful) ban, that kinda thing is at least discouraged here - again versus other places that practically thrive on it.

i also entirely disagree with your 2nd sentence there, there's a lotta people i talk/game with on here that just like what they like, regardless of platform.

He gets paid to do it and his job is based on kickbacks from publishers. Lets not kid ourselves in thinking these guys who work at gaming mags/sites are just biding their time pimping the companies they want to work for. Case in point:

This is why I don't trust fluff articles made by the gaming press.

there are extremely few people that are completely unbiased when it comes to a platform. doesn't mean that they arn't quality posters

People need to vent. They need to hate on Sony because game journalists have not provided a sufficient amount of PS Vita doom articles. Get in GAF or get out, yo!
