Final Fantasy 13 - A Storm Gathers

I'm curious if there's been anything in recent memory like XIII. Like... a first game came out, got really mixed reception... and then magically a second one appears... and now a third.

Versus was announced before the PS3 was even released. We're now at the end of the console cycle. It, like Last Guardian, is dead. This is something everyone should have accepted like 3 years ago. Talk about that shit 10 years from now when Gearbox releases their version of it.

The Killzone series? Maybe the Resistance series too, come to think of it. And Sonic 4, obviously, with Episode 1 which was hated by everyone and their granny, then Episode 2 which was just disliked by most people, and maybe sometime in the future there will be a third episode.

I still gotta beat the first one lol.

I wish I could just watch it and move on to the second...but I can't find any without dudes talking over it.

I don't think Killzone and Resistance count.

Resistance 1 was well received. Resistance 2 wasn't. The beginning of the series was strong.

Killzone 1 was forgettable but it was on the PS2. Killzone 2 was well received and was essentially a relaunch due to the new generation. It only made sense there would be a Killzone 3.

FFXIII is from this generation, and the first entry in the series was crap.

I can't believe they made three of games of this.
It's actually not that hard to believe. On one hand, they spend ages with the screw up that are the Crystal Tools (and the result of that screw up, FFXIII), so they might as well use them for something. They also spend quite a lot of effort in coming up with the Fabula Nova Crystalis idea. On the other hand, next-gen hasn't arrived yet and they are readying a new engine for the upcoming platforms/hardware, yet they can't release games on platforms that don't exist/haven't been launched. They have to fill this gap between old & completely new with something, yet it might not make sense to put effort into something completely new like Final Fantasy XV. Hence, another FFXIII game. I don't really have too many objections, if they continue to make similar steps into the right direction as with FFXIII-2 (which was a big improvement over XIII in many areas, but still not up to par with the best of FFs). Maybe the third time's the charm.

Versus was announced years before they had begun any kind of work on it (Nomura & the KH team worked on different projects and the tools for development weren't even near of being usable). It's no wonder what will probably be (one of) the biggest game(s) (in scope) of this generation (with the kind of production values mainline FFs get) takes a while to be made.

There can't be! Remember, they released the Sonic 4 soundtrack already and it only included music for Episodes 1 and 2 on it.

They can't be making a third. ;_;

what?? people liked episode 2 more than 1? episode 2 is complete trash. episode 1 is an average game that plays nothing like old sonic games.

They'll keep making it until you like it.
lol

They still need to shovel Knuckles in there, so...

Episode 2 got a somewhat better reception in the Sonic GAF Community, at least. Personally I think Episode 1 is pure unfiltered shit, while Episode 2 was just eh. Not bad, but not great either, but at least a vast improvment from the shitstain that was Episode 1.

You're setting yourself up for a big disappointment my friend. It's been well over a year since the last trailer with nothing to show or talk about since then. A lot of games were announced and released in that timeframe. I'm not even talking about that 2006 trailer anymore.

It's even more ironic because we all thought that trailer signalled the opening of the floodgates or something. But it turned out to mark the end of any and all Versus discussion.

Can you wait till TGS before you doom and gloom the place?

Why does Iizuka keep doing this.

Eh, Episode 2 is kind of sort of better but not by much. It replaced the cat music with dying ducks music, but overall, I guess the music is kinda better than Episode 1's. Presentation-wise, it blows Episode 1 out of the water.

Co-op is fine, and when you go back to get the red rings, the stages and team attacks become a little more enjoyable, particularly when you know how to get to the top paths and rush your way through it. I don't like the lag that happens when you initiate the team attacks, but altogether, they work alright. At least Episode 2 kind of has a better final boss.

Episode Metal is trash. Both Sonic 4 games can range from below average to average, imo.

They could always quit now. :O

God, Episode Metal was so bad, especially the Mad Gear Zone level. Iizuka's idea of 'adding challenge' seems to have been 'ENEMIES AND SPIKES EVERYWHERE!' ._.

Anyway, they did say an eventual Episode 3 depended on the sales of Episode 2, and Episode 2 didn't do so hot IIRC, so I guess there may not be more episodes.

Except for the fact that after that January 2011 trailer Nomura said that we should still just try to "forget" Versus for some time, since it was nowhere near finished and considering Square Enix's policies of hyping up the games that are closest to release, Versus would still be held under wraps for quite some time. Still, we've heard some good news about the game after that, like the fact that the world is complete & fully traversable in, like, October 2011 (though not yet filled with content) and that the game has entered the "full development" phase where they put a full team to crunch up the remaining content after a smaller team has been building up the basis of the game (after Type-0 entered full development, it still took almost 10 months to be released, it's not weird a PS3 game would take longer).

Though, with the news that XIV had a 300 man team working on 2.0, I'm a bit worried THAT was behind the whole "these things are out of my hands" comment Nomura said about why Versus was still a no-show (I'm hoping they haven't delayed Versus again for XIV 2.0 after already putting people from KH team to help finish XIII).

Everyone wants more Assassin's Creed. Not sure what you're talking about.

Well, AC1 got a mixed reception (and rightly so, fucking thing was boring as shit), but Ubisoft stuck to their guns and released AC2. It wasn't until AC2 people actually began wanting more AC.

I disagree. Lots of people wanted more AC after AC1. I know because I was one of them as well. AC was a huge title, and while deeply flawed it's clear that it was meant to start off a new franchise with a lot of potential. I don't think it would be fair to say that AC2 came out of nowhere, since it was obvious from the moment AC1 was released (and sold well) that there would be a sequel.

I was under the impression that the first AC had a pretty mixed reception? I haven't played any of them and have no opinion of the series one way or the other, but I remember mixed reviews and one of the Penny Arcade guys getting really defensive about all the criticism it was getting. Several friends of mine who play AC have also told me on multiple occasions to just skip the first game and start with ACII, if I ever play the series. Since Kagari's hypothetical asked for series with a mixed first installment that then spawned multiple sequels, AC was the first thing that came to mind.

I think SE knows a brand new FFXV on 360/ps3 would sell a lot more than these sequels. But they probably figured they wouldn't be able to get FFXV out this gen before next-gen is in full swing. So they settle for these quick, easy sequels to keep a steady cash flow. Either that or Toriyama and Kitase love Lightning and crew way too much.

I'm also ignoring the fact that Ito has been secretly working on FFXV (for next gen) for the past five years.
I hope

I think the part that kinda invalidates it is the "magically appears" part, because we always knew AC would continue as a franchise. The game even ends on a cliffhanger. Unlike FFXIII!

Sonic 4 was my first thought, assuming Episode III gets made.

I'm still amazed that they released Episode II like that after Generations, which was much closer to what people actually wanted from a Sonic 4.

He has been working on a large unannounced project I believe they've stated. So yeah, he probably has. It'll be interesting to see if it's PS360 or PS480 at this point though.

The only mention of him being on a large project was way back during Dissidia's development. Knowing Square Enix, whatever he was working on previously could have been cancelled. It would not be unusual for staff in such a large and poorly managed developer to be stuck coming up with pitches and concepts which don't get the green light, year after year. It might sound totally unproductive, but so is S-E. :P

It's true, although after the terrible roll out of more recent Final Fantasies, I wouldn't be surprised if SE are more included to keep the next one close to their chests until it's really time to put it out too.

Although I've been a strong advocate of their continued use of the numerals, if XV is really being prepared for a near term release, it's going to be really silly. XIII, XIV, XIII-2, XIV-2, XIII-3, VersusXIII then XV? If you're going to completely abandon the order of the numbers, they really should give up altogether.

XIII had you controlling a robot.

I hated that part.

First of all, the game clearly wasn't finished. Second of all, how can you hate the characters already? Third of all, you don't have to use the damn turret.

So what if the game wasn't finished? Lots of people liked what they saw regardless of it being unfinished. I'm simply not impressed by what I've seen so far from the gameplay. Yes, I hate all the characters already except for that one girl. I don't like any of their designs. Noctis looked great in the suit but battle attire or whatever you wanna call it sucks imo. His personality also seems kinda boring.

Yeah, that's fair, though I'd add that it seems like a bit of a mischaracterization in the first place to treat FFXIII-2 as magically appearing as well, given the recent trend w/FF games to sequel-ize and spin-off the main series since X. XIII's ending didn't exactly suggest a sequel (though the Episode i novella that came out afterward definitely did) but I don't think XIII-2 was entirely out of left field either.

There's no XIV-2 though. 2.0 is a version number, it's not a sequel. :P
