I've downloaded maybe 50 to 100 items of varying sizes from PSN over the course of 4 years and I still didn't know that PSN store downloads won't resume while background downloads do.
Yeah, I agree it's not intricate. It's just ridiculously obtuse and arbitrary.

Wait, only background downloads can save progress. I am so glad I didn't run into this issue when downloading large games before.
Is there actually any indication of the difference between active and background download on PSN, or is it something you have to figure out on your own? If it is the latter, I don't think all the blame should be on the OP.
1. No 'backup' function - I will be pissed if/when my PS3 ever bites the bullet because I'll have to go back through my download/purchased list and download each DLC and DD game file one by one. I have no idea why there isn't a mass re-download option. It'd be much easier to go back through and remove the stuff you don't want afterward (old demos and such) than to have to download all the content you want piece by piece.
t.
are you sure that you have had a PS3 since launch..?

Backup is a feature in the settings menu.. but maybe I misunderstood something.
This thread takes me back to 2006. Downloading the Motorstorm demo on that HTML-based PS Store.
That was something to complain about...
Backup as in copying games to USB sticks and stuff. (I think) I also really want that. :/

The PS3 wireless adaptor is a piece of shit.
I guess that's it. I usually do download in background but this time I just left it on, had to leave and run some errands and wasn't going to use the PS3. Why even give you the option then? What the fuck is the point of downloading directly on PSN?
Because most things aren't 10 gigs? They'll download and install instantly for the most part.
Because those are completely valid comparisons to what I described.
Bravo, you're on a roll in this thread!

The PS3 wireless adaptor is a piece of shit. If you must use wireless then a) for goodness sake turn off media sharing and b) you could try turning off your controllers (seriously) because Bluetooth interferes with Wifi.
The suggestion that PSN infrastructure is not up to scratch is ill-informed nonsense. PSN content is hosted by Akamai and they have one of the best networks in the business. For example they also host content for Apple including all the media on iTunes. It is definitely not a case of crappy servers.
Sorry OP but i can't help but laugh
For big files i put them all in background download , to something else and when i'm done with the ps3 i ask the console to shut down itself when the download is done .
i have plenty of digital title so i don't know why you talk about psn when the problem lies in the ps3 itself .. since that's just how ps3 handles the files ..
you could had no problem with 1 more button press .
Also the psn speed problem is nothing but fantasy.. PSN is fast now , except the night the store updates.
Yes...PSN really is that bad.
Remember kids...there was a time when the PS3 didn't have background downloading. Those were the days.
Additionally, this does not back up games and DLC to my knowledge. As far as I know this is only media files and saved game data.
Fantasy? You need to stop by by house then. Watch out for the unicorn shit though.

My main problem is my internet router (my landlord's router actually) that kicks me offline every now and again, not only on PSN, but also my PC, etc. Download speeds also depend because our router is so shitty even though it's verizon wireless.
The things I don't like about PSN downloads are that it doesn't background download when you're:
1) Watching a Blu Ray/DVD movie
2) Playing a PS1/PS2 game
3) Playing a game online
4) Playing a game offline but the game has online components
I can kinda understand 3 but it still pisses me off. I think vita and xbox live are able to background download while you're playing a game online.
I can download from three different accounts and watch them all finish while I play another game.
Was this silly thread title really necessary OP?
