Resident Evil 6 - Review Thread | Activist Reviews and the Hate Patrol Destroy Truth™

So we just went from arguing about reviews on Resident Evil 6 to whether Resident Evil 4 sucks?

Resident Evil 4 is amazing. Or was amazing to some. You can't deny that.

Also the spiritual sequel to Resident Evil 4 is totally Dead Space.

Dead Space has definitely carried the mantle where RE left off last generation.

Still worried about 3 though.

let's not forget the scariest part of RE4 was on The Island actually, not in the castle or the village. yeah there was a lot RE5 like action in there but it had very spooky parts too.

The Island owned and also had two of the "scariest" moments in the entire franchise.

The entire island is a blur for me. I cannot pinpoint a single scary moment in 4 at all, as opposed to 1-CVX or DS where I can very specifically describe scenes and instances, and I haven't played some of those games in a decade or more. To be fair, 5 has zero scary moments as well and I'm sure 6 won't leave anything memorable on that front either.

Who's saying RE4 sucks?

Just that one guy people keep quoting.

Please. RE4 has you running all over god's creation compared to Dead Space or any classic RE.

RE2 and RE3 had you traipse all over a major metropolitan city from one side to the other, CV had you go from an unnamed island to Antarctica, and Dead Space took place on two ships and the surface of a planet.

Regeneradors, U-3.

(Verdugo is Castle but it was a similarly scary moment that was tense and scary because of RE4's action style of gameplay)

the first encounter with Regenerador in the freezer room is the most memorable part of any RE game for me, It was just unlike anything you saw in the game to that point and I didn't know what to do the first time, totally not expecting and really scary. I just don't really care about 1-3 much these days though...

I honestly have no idea what those are. I've only played through 4 once, and I do remember the major points along the game, but by the island I wanted it to end.. Have you seen the demo for the early version of RE4's castle? That shit looked legit scary, absolutely nothing like the castle we got.

Goofy supernatural stuff isn't really scary. I'm glad they scrapped it tbh.

The castle in DMC is pretty similar to the castle we got in RE4, no doubt because DMC started off as another version of RE4...

And yet none of them covered nearly as much ground as RE4. RE4 was like three times as long as any of these games, and it didn't have a ton of backtracking. I remember Capcom saying the most common complaint they got from fans was that it was too long.

Honestly, the scariest part in all of RE4 to me was the first time you encounter the invisible bugs.

I was freaking the fuck out.

Resident Evil 4 has Oven Man, the best jump scare in all of the series

Resident Evil 6 has jump scares in cutscenes, at which point I'm better off plopping in a slasher movie DVD.

Well fuck those fans.

I'm losing track of what you're trying to point out..? RE4 is too long - exactly. The 3 major settings - village, castle, island - are dragged out. Even if the other games are shorter, they offer much more palatable bursts of different locations to keep the experience fresh, or at least not let you get sick of the same environment. Even RE1's first half of mansion -> guard house -> new part of mansion is enough.

The scariest parts of RE4 is the entirety of Chapter 2 (After nightfall) and certain parts of the island. The castle was overall the least scary, but it sure was fun suplexing monks.

He was trying to make it sound like early REs had you cover as much ground as RE4, I was countering that.

I always assumed Capcom was full of shit and just doing damage control because they knew RE5 would be shorter.

Assuming we're not talking speed runs, I'd say RE5 is a bit longer than 4. Actually, checking speed run times, 5 is still longer. Just saying.. people say 4 is long because it feels stretched out for no reason by the end, not because it's oozing with oh so much awesome content. I'd gladly cut some fat off of 5 as well though.

Ah.. Well the scope of the earlier ones was obviously more on confined urban spaces.

the castle was the goofiest part of the game. Everything Salazar and Leon say, big Salazar walker etc. and the monks make too much noise, you could tell where they are before you see them. Garrador dropping in the cage was the only remotely scary part imo, the rest is shooting gallery. the part you play as Ashley is pretty cool too.

I picked the Chris campaign first. I haven't even finished the first level and I already want to return the game to the video store. What is this? Its not Resident Evil. :-\

*shrug* Maybe. I liked RE4 a lot and remember pretty much all of it, I can't say the same for RE5.

Think we've all already expressed our personal opinions by now. Aren't we just discussing the general variety and pacing of the games?

I was actually responding to the "farflung areas" comment, which is kind of ridiculous when you consider the actual geographic locations involved. There's a lot of areas and length in RE4, but it's mostly confined to a relatively small geographical area as opposed to CV, where you literally go to another continent. I do understand your point about the Ishimaru compared to the mansion, by the way.

Anyway, RE4 had plenty of tense and scary moments and encounters that a lot of people took for granted.

First time being surrounded by villagers and Doc Salvador revving up with a terrifying one hit kill near you.
That nighttime downpour where you first see Plagas, the wolves, and fight the first Gigante.
Bella Sisters coming out when you jump into a pit.
The Chief bursting out of the flames during his fight.
First time you heard the monks chanting and laughing as they slowly marched towards you.
Encountering the first Garrador in the jail.
Novistador sewer
Verdugo fight
Every single Regenerator area, especially the first few where you feel utterly emasculated despite having built up such an arsenal
First half of the U-3 fight, for similar reasons

I see your point too. To me the difference is that RE4 keeps a pretty good pace of pushing you forward to new areas very often. Even if they're technically near each other, it just feels like you're going all over the place. I felt a very different vibe compared to running back and forth and constantly backtracking through the mansion, RPD HQ, Racoon City, the base in CV, the base in Zero, the Ishimura, etc. True that eventually you finally go off to a completely different place in CV and Dead Space. Still a very different atmosphere and vibe, on the whole. I really like the "rat in a maze" thing.

This is a thread about Resident Evil 6 reviews, but somehow it has turned into something even worse.

Well, people being disappointed with 6's reception will naturally try and go back to earlier installments and see what went right and wrong.

In the end, some people like the game, some people don't - welcome to every review thread.. or every game thread.

+ Salazar's Garden
+ Ashley's segment
+ Cabin Scene... it goes on.

It's true that these moments are interspersed with some (comparatively) vanilla action, but that's no different to say all the 'cooling off' time in older RE games where you're fighting or dodging the typical zombie while item fetching/puzzle solving.

LOL IGN 7.9'ed RE6. IGN returning to it's former 0.1 glory system. I bet they couldn't wait to drop the 7.9 down.

This has been bugging the shit out of me, along with their fucking terrible page layouts for reviews. Really, that whole fucking site needs redesigned. But, yeah. What the fuck is the difference between a 7.9 and an 8.0 or 7.8!? Dumb shit.

holy shit there is so much wrong in here.first of all RE4 is shit and completely overrated.also it marked the start of RE's downfall.RE0 is great and felt like RE with the same controls. Code veronica is incredible and was the last good RE.

I like how you went from one gif to another but in the end you're chastising someone who doesn't like RE4 with a gif of someone who also doesn't like RE4! The madness!!
