I wish quality=sales. K.Dot deserves to go platinum with this. Though I have a feeling Gold might be a pipe dream. Especially with how shitty hip hop album sales have been. If your name aint Wayne/Jay/Kanye/Eminem/Drake, you aint going plat.

I would love to be wrong though.

I dunno, Poetic Justice and Compton could be huge because of the features.

you always are.

the only reason why i would believe kendrick could push 100k+ 1st week is the fact that cole sold like 220k, i still have no idea how that happened. i think he bought like 150k copies

kendrick has ZERO mainstream appeal, and thats where all the album sales come from. swimming pools is not gonna sell albums

Weren't Workout and Can't Get Enough big hits for Cole?

I can see Kendrick doing 110k first week, then 35k after that, then vanish from the map.

Maybe, I still dont see it.

you always are.

Lets hope I continue the trend. Hopefully Im gloriously wrong about this.

Cole doing 220k was easily predictable. I was calling 150-200k for about a year before he dropped. Even made a avatar bet with Kam that Cole would outsell both Yela and KRIT. Girls loved Cole, dem bushy eyebrows makes the panties wet. Or something.

That reminds me of, for such a Radio Active album (no pun intended), Yelawolf's low sales still puzzle me.

Anyway, The Recipe did good for Kendrick. I don't think Swimming Pools did jack shit.

I foresee respectable debut sales thanks to the fans, but I don't think it will have legs.

Radioactive was hot garbage.

Can't wait for bigghostnahmean review of Poetic Justice. lol

People always underestimated how much of a fanbase Cole actually had through women. They already knew him from Drake.

That's a big reason I think he did as well as he did.

Here's the thing, Kendrick needs to put videos out for his next single like NOW. Pretty sure Poetic Justice is the next single, but dude needs that last push. Swimming Pools been out for a minute but he needs to cover all the bases. Compton would be huuuuuuuuuuuge for the association with Dr. Dre alone.

It's just this day and age you really can't predict shit. What did Wiz do first week? 4k or some shit? I know I like to clown the dude but that was a shocker. Kardinal had Dangerous and Set It Off and he only did the same amount, too. As unknown as he was to most of America at the time, thats WAY too little for dude that did Dangerous. Then Slaughterhouse sold 76K which is amazing for what they are and the niche they appeal to.

Way too many factors. Plus there's that invisible marketing push that you really just have to estimate as you have no clear indicator of.
Wow at the explanation, awesome story. Where is that gif from?

Wasn't there supposed to be a video of The Recipe in the works? They should capitalize on that, since it's easily the most memorable/recognizable/marketable song in the album. I remember Dre saying recently that it's doing pretty good in charts and stuff.

Yela aint radio friendly. Even when he tries desperately to be. He has this odd look, combined with a very unique voice. Not many females like that shit. He would be best served by sticking to his trunk muzik lane, and eat off of tour money. Not sure what Shady is going to do about him though. They probably will do another album, and if it doesnt do at least 100k, hes gone.

Yea kendrick could definitely bank off of Dr. Dre's name.

Wiz did almost 200K first week with Rolling Papers.

Nah dude, Wiz did almost 200k his first week. Rolling Papers is gold. Shitty, dull, poop covered gold.

It's been done for awhile, but never released

damn who am I thinking of that did some obscenely low numbers first week out of the new school? I remember something like that

It's pretty sad how an artist's mainstream success depends on how marketable (or attractive) they are to females.

I know how black boy fly doesn't fit the album's current narrative, but it was planned to be a part of the album at one point right? What's the meaning behind the song? Who is he referring to throughout it? A high school friend who made it out through basketball?

Women are more than half the population. A lot of dudes these days listen to artists just because women listen to them. Otherwise they wouldn't bother.

edit: fuckin esch

I was just referring to how different their tastes in music are, that a person's attractiveness or marketable appearance are big factor's to that demographic

This has been the way of music almost forever..

Goes both ways as well..

Check The Orlando Magic's roster.

Don't worry. Kendrick is doing 200k minimum. The new formula is exactly what J. Cole did. Tour, tour, tour, and drop a quality mixtape(s). Then follow up with a quality album that meets the expectation of the core fans. See Drake, see Wiz, see J. Cole, and watch Kendrick do the same.

I don't have as high hopes as you guys.

Kendrick doesn't appeal to women like they do.

Plus Wiz isn't even comparable. Dude had one of the biggest rap songs of the past couple years.

You can tell K. Dot had been writing and planning this album his entire life. That's usually the case with great debut albums......dude put his life into music format

I alluded to this in my review, the seeming lack of attention span that modernity has created.
It's not that, I guess I just don't find them all that interesting, so as a result they don't really add much for me.

Not a deal breaker, though, easily skippable.

Album's a little long, but that's fine when everything comes together so well. Every song and skit feels like it has a role in the overall story/theme of the album and they usually lead into the next song.

I have some songs I prefer over others, but I think I prefer letting it ride through to the end instead of skipping around.

From a random guy on KTT

This album is mad deep

AOTY

Damn, this is great.

Clears up some parts that weren't really clear to me.

Arron Afflalo and The Game.
both from Compton

Dunno if I like this more than Section 80. It's solid though, and that's what's important. It's just a good album to me: nothing exceptional. That might sound negative, but it's not. It's clear he gave a fuck about this album and it shows. Hella cohesive.

Best album of the year, easily. Haven't stopped listening to it. It's a great album that never loses site of its concept or execution. The little touches on Dying of Thirst make that the immediate stand out track for me. I really love BSF and Good Kid is a great portrayal of a regular dude growing up in a city where the expectation is that you're a Piru. I'm not even mad at the Dre features on here. On Compton he seems to give a shit, which is rare these days. The extended versions of the tracks really are 2 songs in one, which shows that there are probably a Lost Tapes version of this in Dre's studio.

If I had to rate it, it would be a 9.5/10 for me, with Real and Money Trees being the only missteps for me.

I with you on Real but Money Trees is great, Jay Rock is leveling up like crazy lately.

The repetition of the kinda stupid "You bish" thing just takes me out of the song. Not a huge thing, but in an album so cohesive it stands out, and not in a positive way.

People said it bothered them at first and less so with time. Keep listening.

I didn't mind it at all upon first listen. Now I'm adding 'ya bish' to the end of my sentences like mad. I came home from class and greeted my dog with "Otis! let's get some food ya bish"

On my 4x listen. It's an autoskip for me in the future. It just doesn't do it for me, bro.
