Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

Thanks for this, those settings work a treat on my system (amd 7950, i5 2500k@4300) although I can't handle 60fps it just seems so wrong to me after playing this game at 30fps from the beginning.

I played most of my time at 30, only played about an hour (on 100+ i have) at 60, yet the other day i had to activate 30 to make the Firelink jump and was utterly disgusted at the difference.
30fps is ok, if you've never seen the game run at 60 fps, basically.
For me, at least.

Yeah I just double checked and it's set to 1. Not sure what's up - I have been playing the game with the huge HUD but not sure at this point what I can do

That's the problem I am having. Set presentWidth/Height to 0 and keep render the same as you have it for downsampling and the HUD mod should work as well as the downsampling. Not sure why this is but it worked for me.

Stick with it for 1-2 hours and you won't know how you were ever happy with 30fps.

I love 60 fps, but since switching to the new 2.01 I have been tripped out twice...albeit in the worst areas (blighttown swamp and Manus cave township bonfire.) Is there anything I can do? Wasa a toggle or something mentioned?

edit: Last night I actually made it with a friend (sullichin from this board) through capra, gapiong and queelag) he was 30fps and I was 60...si ti was a rare fortune to go so long together!!!

Did you have to assign that yourself or does the DSkeys file already contain the necessary coding?

dskeys assigned it on its own. A little bit of a problem at first as I was using backspace to exit out of menus, and still have to for main menus, so I would have to keep fraps running to make sure i hit it the right number of times to be at 60fps. If you are using kbam to play along with the mouse fix you can just right click to exit most menus.

I watched a video of the game at 60fps and WOW it looks nice. I can't imagine having the choice between 30 and 60 and picking 30.

The 60FPS unlock is a must, as the engine no longer dips to 15FPS in foggy areas, like Darkroot Basin.

Is it possible to completely disable the DoF? I don't like it very much, and making it as pretty as possible taxes my hardware too much.

Been keeping up with the thread, just wanted to say that this is the 4th most viewed thread on the gaming side.

Also, is it true that youtube will only run videos ar 30FPS?

I hope the Dark Souls community has been generous to Durante through donations. Guy literally fixed a game and probably has made FROM a bunch of cash.

Sliding down ladders is important! Actually, collision issues worry me period, plus unlike other games there's that interpolated motion look that bugs me. Although if I can use that THEN cap the FPS at 30 to avoid collision detection I might want to use it just to kill the harsh dips down to 15 FPS.

There is really only 2 situations in the entire game where this is an issue.

I managed to get all achievements playing always at 60.

What do you guys think would look better. Double my resolution downscaled w/ no AA, or half my resolution downscaled w/ level 2 SMAA?
Double the resolution, but those two have very different performance requirements. SMAA should be almost free compared to increasing the resolution. Also, when you are downscaling, IMHO FXAA is a better choice. The downscaling fixes the loss of clarity.

And by the way, you can tell dsfix to skip AA if you drop below some framerate threshold.

I have a problem, for me the actual game is stuck in a small window up in the upper left corner. The menu is fine, the GUI is fine too, its just the little window where I see stuff happening that keeps going up into the left. I have set the renderwidth and height to a 1080p screen so I am not sure what I have done wrong here.

Any ideas?

Did you disable the in-game AA in Dark Souls?

Here we go again:

Why isn't something like this

In the OP yet? :P

Made something like this a few pages back.

Need to make it even more over the top because it's still not getting noticed!

So is there a better fix to skip all the intro logos? enabling the option in the dsfix doesn't skip them, it just replaces them with a black screen, so it still takes the same amount of time to get to the start menu.

That's not what happens to me. Goes straight to the game.

Does the Xbox controller not work? I can't even bind the keys- It's on because I can access the GFWL functionality with it.

Any help? Do I have to set the buttons manually once I've applied DSFix?

That's not what should happen, they should be skipped completely with that option. Are you on Windows 8?

3d in darksouls is really spectacular actually. The Helix mod helps a lot with some of the flaws.

You know, I never even thought of trying this. Is it that good? What MODS should I get to try it?

I am currently waiting for a summons to fight
The guy with the two swords, I forgot his name
I was hoping to get summoned to practice ... or something

Set "disableDofScaling" to 1 in the DSFix .ini.

Thanks, Orayn, but that causes "worse performance, not as originally intended" and is not recommend by Durante. How is disabling a visual effect like Depth of Field *more* taxing on the hardware?

The way the game implements DOF is by lowering the resolution of distant objects, as i understand it.
Therefore to remove the DOF, you need to up the res of those elements, making it more taxing.

Don't know if this is the correct thread, but is anyone else getting screen tearing with Sweet FX? D3DOverider and anything else to force vsync doesn't seem to work. Could it have something to do with the FPS being unlocked?

Happens on both my laptop and main gaming rigs...

If you use D3DOverrider and force it on for DATA.exe, when in fullscreen there will not be any tearing.

That's just the thing though, both data.exe and darksouls.exe are forced and I still get tearing when using Sweet FX, none without using it both FPS unlocked. The tearing goes away when I re-lock the fps in DSFix though...

Just didn't know if anyone had a clue what to do?

Edit: Did a couple tests, Sweet FX DOES seem to totally ignore D3DOverider (no usual bleeps when launching the game to signal D3D is active) and all other forms of V-Sync for some reason. Including through Nvidia panel/inspector and trying the v-sync option in DSFix...nothing stops the tearing. Is this just something I'll have to deal with until/if it gets fixed or is there a known workaround? Lighting does look great though.

SweetFX, regular ol' injectSMAA, and the original FXAA injector all break D3DOverrider. No idea why Nvidia Inspector's vsync is also busted... It certainly works fine for me while using post AA injectors.

Borderless windowed mode seems to be the trick for most cases.

This is correct.

Yes, that's because they are all implemented as direct3d.dll overrides. That's the reason why DSfix switched to an injector based on dinput.dll. It's a bit more work to implement but fixes that problem.

I extracted the .rar into the DATA folder in my steam directory before I booted the game up for the first time and now it crashes on launch. I get a black screen, windowed box for the game to run in, and it crashes in two seconds.

Deleted all the extracted files, restarted comp, tried to run it and still got a crash upon launch. Just deleted all of the local content and am reinstalling it.

Did I do anything wrong? The .exe is located in the DATA folder so I'm not sure what to do differently this time.

Sorry for my confusing post, I am about 1/3 way with not a whole lot of time to play games, I dont want to loose my current progress but I want the sexy graphics. :)

I think you would be surprised how quickly you would catch up to where you left off. Being familiar with the environment and enemies makes a ridiculously huge difference in playtime. I think things that took 20+ hours my first playthrough were compressed down to like 2 or 3 in later playthroughs.

So, what do people feel is better. Playing normal or in 3D? I was going to try 3D tonight, but I am concerned I will screw up my DSFix setup or something.

My first few hours felt frustrating and I saw no progress being made, so I dropped it. Came back about 2 weeks later with fresh zeal to actually kill Capra. Felt amazing to down him and then make some great progress. It makes starting a new class and running through the first encounters so much easier. Now I have clocked about 50+ hours and feel like I am only just getting into it. :D

Yes you probably did something wrong. But you also reinstalled the entire game for no reason at all.

Library>right click on Dark Souls>properties>local files>verify integrity of game cache

Doing that instead of reinstalling will have steam check what the files on your pc are compared to what they should be. it will remove and replace any changes you've made to the game files and restore it to normal.

Okay to ask a game question? Not sure if I'm handling this right... But what's the best plan of action if I can't beat an enemy or boss? Level at the area? Skip the boss? I'm near the entrance of the garden area and I can't beat the bell gargoyle and stuff...

Don't know if this has been asked before, but Durante, what kind of download numbers and traffic have you been getting on your site?
