Other M deserves better

having finished the game..
i'd say it deserves better/more respect

first of all, people complaining about 'thebabythebaby', complete bullshit
not saying it wasnt repeated, but way, way over exaggerated

the gameplay/controls were ok:
the non-pointer stuff, ie, the dpad controls were pretty good
i felt that the 2d metroid's control/gameplay was really captured in these controls
the pointer stuff was a mess, good thing there wasnt THAT much in it, though i thought it was interesting

the health regen only when low and missile recharge was stupid, it made killing enemies useless, but, it definitely made the game more streamlined
one of the things I hated about 2d metroid was grinding for health and missiles when i desperately needed it

the story was pretty good
there were 2 stupid moments i felt:
1) when samus froze when she saw ridley, then anthony saved her, that was definitely 'out of character', the entire scene was retarded
2) when the cpt sacrificed himself, again, samus was 'out of character' but not as bad
i didnt see the value of killing off him, felt unnecessary, BUT, it added to the ending of the game, which was pretty nice
they wanted to make samus more human, i think they accomplished it very well
i actually enjoyed the samus narrative, the entire cast's voice acting was pretty good, which was surprising

my last complaint is that there were no new powerups or anything like that, real missed opportunity there

Sakamoto shitted up Samus as a character. I don't think it was all terrible, but it's pretty weak how negatively he of all people impacted the game. Also, it should have been a straight sidescroller with no pointing at the screen and no walking spy parts.

I agree, and I've always thought the GAF hate was unjustified. The scene with Ridley really nailed down the fact that even Samus has human moments of uncontrollable fear. I liked it. Come at me, bros.

Samus wasn't out of character in scene 1. She had a PTSD flashback. They should have shown the actual flashback for people who aren't familiar with why she has PTSD. Scene 2 was very poorly handled.

They ruined one of our favorite heroines by giving her a horrible personality and story.

Can't say I'm willing to give M.O.M. another chance.

But why would she have this moment during her 5th encounter with her, (or 3rd if you don't count the Prime series like Nintendo) as opposed to her first? That doesn't make sense.

Sure the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth times she fought him she was totally calm BUT THIS TIME ITS DIFFERENT

It really doesn't. Even leaving the awful, repugnant story and Samus character assassination aside, there's nothing to find or reason to explore unless you're a really, really bad shot with missiles. I know it's difficult/silly to keep coming up with ways to make her lose all her upgrades at the beginning of each game, but there's a damn good gameplay reason for it. Having all the upgrades already on Samus and just waiting to be activated robs the game of a ton of the exploratory nature of the previous Metroids. Even if I'd loved the story, I would consider it a very subpar entry in the series due to the linearity and lack of discovery.

EDIT: ^

This game was a complete slap in the face to Metroid fans everywhere. Samus was completely out of character, turned from an ice cold bounty hunter, cool as shit, to a whiney brat. Not to mention all the anime moe shit. Gameplay was a disaster, and so on and so forth.

Let this game be forgotten as that 'Other Metroid', indeed.

I liked it. It was fun switching between third and first person views. I also liked the dodge mechanic.

I didn't like the first person investigating sequences though.

OP's review is actually a bit negative, heh. I guess it's still more positive than how GAF generally views the game.

I also dug the non-first person controls. I think it would be a good direction to take as someone who plays the games but isn't a die hard fan (and as someone who got motion sickness from Metroid Prime 2).

But yeah, the game was sort of a mess with regards to story and certain gameplay decisions like pixel hunting and seemingly pointless over-the-shoulder segments.

Adding cutscenes to a series that had become revered for telling a story/ establishing the setting without breaking immersion? And has basically killed the series for the time being? Pretty much deserves the hate it gets.

Huge step backwards from the Prime games in every way. We should be seeing less cutscenes these days, not more.

The game was fine, its biggest problem was that it ran the credits seemingly in the middle, after a boring battle (but got awesome after that), and that it didn't support an analog stick for control despite team ninja clearly intending it to.

I don't argue with much that Sakamoto does but that was a bad call.

I think the story sucked but the gameplay was solid and it was a shame the everyone ignored the actual game part because of the stupid plot.

You mean the "mash any direction on the d-pad at any time for invincibility" mechanic.

Ignoring the story and cutscenes, I liked it, but it was bogged down by a lot of stupid design choices.

I appreciated that it actually felt like 2D Metroid in 3D, but I wish they got to go the extra mile and open up the world instead of focusing on a lame murder mystery with almost no resolution. And also exploring a space station was lame considering we just did that in Fusion.

Story was terrible, mainly because of Samus going from intergalactic planet destroyer to utter bitch. They could have kept the same plot structure, changed the personalities, and made the story way better just by doing that. Some of Adam's reasonings were good; Him saying, "Hey this is technically my operation, and I feel that your suit's upgrades might damage stuff more than necessary" is smart. Making Samus into a bitch in her motivations for following "Oh it's Adam!" and happy to do so was not. Make her sulk away grumbling about how lame it is or something, but begrudgingly agree. Make Samus not go into PTSD mode for seeing Ridley for like the 10th time that week. Things like that.

Gameplay, it was overly linear. I love the engine, I love the combat (missile mode could have been better) and I'd like to see the general mechanics return. But not in the same linear level design.

Graphics... 50/50. I like some of the stylings. But a lot of things looked retarded. That's all I'll say *cough federation uniforms cough*

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
"I read the posts on NeoGAF, seeing the arguments for and against my game. I scroll down, hoping that the memories of the Baby would provide me comfort. The words they used to describe my game, made me feel bad on the inside. I must find ways to make my voice as monotone as possible, as monotone expresses that I have no emotion, and no emotion makes me sound like I have no soul, because Sakamoto removed it from me. Sakamoto is like a..." Okay I'm done now.

This was the 3rd or 4th time she fought him. Prime games aren't in the same canon as Other M. In all previous encounters she already knew he was still alive. In her previous encounter with him, she blew up the entire planet he was on. She says in the intro that she believed that she had wiped out the metroids, space pirates, and Ridley. PTSD is a mental disorder. It's not the same as just having a memory; its invasive when triggered.

I mean. If I kept killing a giant fuck off space dragon, and then I run into said giant fuck off space dragon, I'd be fairly freaked myself. In a desperate, frantic, "why are you still alive" kind of way. You know. Like Samus did.
Giant Space Dragon? No problem for a bounty hunter. But if it keeps coming back, after you've adequately murdered it, the human reaction would be to be a bit frazzled.

Edit: Other M isn't perfect though. Its stupid amounts of linear, and sometimes the controls just kinda. Do their own thing. But I wish it would get a sequel, the engine is 2D metroid in 3D executed almost perfectly. Id love a gameplay driven sequel focused around capturing the open world feel of the original games. I think everyone could be happy with that.
