What does NEOGAF think of the graphics on Wii U's second wave of games

None of the games so far are blowing me away visually, but considering we're still within sight of the launch these do look pretty damn good.

I'll also say that my expectations for this machine are very high, considering the Wii had some of the best looking games last gen in spite of its power- well, when they were run through Dolphin at least.

I'm surprised that someone remember LAIR. Haha.

He has got to be trolling.

I remember thinking that Lair looked like shit back when I first played it at a PS3 preview event in 2006.

Two Worlds 2 on PS3, mid tier game.

They look like nice current gen games, which is good for such early titles. I wouldn't argue if you told me they were PS3/360 though.

Man, you're really invested in this aren't you?

Get ready to switch to 'graphics don't mean shit! It's all about gameplay!' in six months ;)

someone should make a list.

that should always be the case regardless of console. Fuck graphicswhoreism. It has brought the cost up so high and you can see the damage it has done just this gen. Fuck the people who are more interested in how the wall and ground is looking rather then how the game play is and what new things game is doing. Do people even play games they just want to watch pretty movies.

If X is what Nintendo can do with a open world game, I await the title Retro is working on. Should be head and shoulders. And oh its alright folks, Wii U has a game that looks a bit better than current generation, it's fine to admit it and move on lol.

Mostly I'm just confused as hell why someone would compare anything to Lair. Lair? Surely there are better candidates out there.

As for "how I'm feeling," mostly the same, though I do personally think X with its scope is at a level of fidelity that would, at bare minimum, be quite a challenge on current gen consoles without relatively notable compromises.

Just my impression though. Nothing comes to mind on current gen that makes a definitive case for the contrary.

My bad. I was discussing gif you posted. Didnt realize we were comparing Xenoblade. Because nothing on that gif is out of this Gen.

Maybe it doesn't look out of this gen, but as I've always argued, it looks slightly better than PS3/360 games. Never said it was next gen or something. Even if you're discussing the gif I posted, if you can't see the difference between this and your Lair screenshot... you might have big problems with your seeing.

I like to play games that look pretty. I live in an age where I can often have both to be honest.

So apparently I'm in a minority on GAF in thinking that Lair looked really fucking nice at 1080p, and AntiAliased

The gap between the demo and the actual game was surprising. Graphics aren't anything special now days, but the sense of scale is there, and worth mentioning in that regard. Just Cause 2 is still above everything. That game has to be running on some voodoo magic to pull off what it does.

A lot of people seem very invested, yourself included. This kind of subtle ad hominem has always bugged me. You're obviously are desperate as he is to prove without a shadow of a doubt that this is all current gen visuals.

Which, whatever, that's fine, that's your mandate, but don't pretend like it isn't.

Artwise it's nice, but nothing technically impressive.

Here's Yoshi at native res. Looks much less impressive than the downsampled pics in the op.

"Better than PS3/360" implies next gen, since the WiiU released last year.

Game looks good for the hardware, its nothing that 360/ps3 couldn't do, but that isn't Nintendo's aim anyway.

I do find it funny though how we're googly eyed about Nintendo and graphics, until the HD twins drop, then it won't be about graphics anymore. I think the system and the games will turn out fantastic, (its already looking promising with ND concluded) but it comes off a bit hypocritical from the "gameplay" crowd.

As a person who is more than happy with the the current gen of console and the graphics produced by them, I am just happy that Nintendo is finally hitting that bar. I mean, of course I would love to see Nintendo's developers work on the best hardware in the world and produce the most gorgeous graphics, but at the present moment, I'm happy with what I'm seeing.

No you're not. Some people seem to be unwilling to talk about just technical proficiency in this thread. When Lair came out it was the first game to attempt anything of that scale, and it still managed some impressive set pieces and effects on top of all that. Terrible gameplay yes, bad art arguably too, but way ahead of it's time in certain areas.

Good enough.
Monolith's project looks very impressive. If they can pull of the large gameworld of Xenoblade in HD at a good framerate and draw distance and still be able to fly around in a mech seamlessly then that would be quite the achievement.

The most comparable game graphically to X that we have on current gen IMO is Just Cause 2.

There is some things that Just Cause 2 is better at, but draw distance, animation and character models seems to be heavily in favor of X.

They look like very very nice 360/PS3 games but with great image quality and performance.

So, about what most sensible folk expected from Wii U. Which is also to say, going to play very nice with Nintendo's IPs.
Thank you both for this. Unfortunately your posts are likely to be ignored in the hyper-partisan rabble.
My head hurts.

They've been giving me headaches all day.

Games are looking better and better, as they should.

The Wii U needs to get to the point where it's no longer being compared with 7-8 year old consoles.

We're judging from a blurry, bad, offscreen.

We did the same thing over the Zelda and Bird demos and those turned out to be not special.

But then again many diehard fans are still holding on to those demos as being amazing and outside of the bounds of this gen, somehow.

Unfortunately there is no way will happens. Specs are too much close. Yes, even in those shots I see some little details where can overtakes the counterparts but are just very little details in the global scheme of the things.

Yeah, I'm still not too sure about this. This generation was brutal to devs because consumers demanded that games look amazeballs, without caring about how the game actually plays. Studios shutting down left and right because their game couldn't sell 2 million or sometimes even 1 million copies. That's ridiculous.

The upcoming generation seems to up the ante even more. Is this really what you want? Do you want people to loose their jobs because their studio's budget couldn't handle making the game look like CGI in motion? Obviously I'm exaggerating some, but you get what I'm trying to say.

PC gaming is where it's at if you want crazy realistic graphics. Console gaming on the other hand...well I think developers need to thread a little bit more lightly, and consumers need to understand this.

For the upcoming generation, I really would prefer 1080p @ 60fps with less graphical enhancements than 1080p @ 30fps with the graphics turned up to 100. Hopefully, devs will start investing more in gameplay, and consumers will get back to the heart of gaming: to enjoy games...

I think Retro's stuff will be the only studio to really wow graphically. Nintendo doesnt really have any other studios that can match Sony or Microsoft's handpicked wizards in that area beyond them.

Stuff on show was good HD generation games, nothing more, nothing less. Certainly nothing beyond PS3/X360.

The Mario team usually weren't that impressive when it came to graphics. I mean, they made really nice looking games, for sure, but they were a clear step below the likes of Rare and Factor 5 and such. However, EAD Tokyo has proven themselves to be one of the premiere graphics wizards last gen and if they make another SMG, that game is gonna be fucking sensory overload.

Mmh... Is my english so bad ?
I mean, I just said "slightly better". Did I used the wrong word ? Just to be sure, slightly is equal to small right ? I've never said it's out of this gen can do, I only said it looks slightly better, considering the scale and the graphic quality.

Im surprised we havent seen any people bring up Killzone 3, Gears of War 3, Halo 4, God of War 3, and Uncharted 2 yet

Granted the Wii U games look good, personally they look like upper level Ps3/360 games, but it seems like the Wii U will end up the same as last gen

Wii was stronger then Gamecube but still paled in comparison with Ps3/360

I think this will repeat itself

Wii U is stronger then Wii/360/Ps3 but will ultimately pale compared to PS4/Durango

Regardless of personal opinion of what looks better, I really think Xeno is a pretty wonderful effort for an early lifespan showing, one still under development, from a far more inexperienced studio no less. I'm pretty impressed, and I hope it's a torch Nintendo can carry with their own bigger games come E3.

If Nintendo wants to hit a general quality of aesthetics that you have to throw hyper polished releases like RDR against, then I'm very satisfied with that. More is always better, but no complaints.

I'm still hoping that Nintendo can really push a little further, though, I do admit that wish that the Wii U could brunt just a bit further though, mostly for 1080p. 1080p and some solid AA can do RIDICULOUS shit for open world games visuals. Games you'd think had middling visuals on consoles turn into stunners like some kind of magic.

Although, I still expect really stupid silly things done with image quality on new boxes as well, I would love to be wrong!

I think they all look way too early in development to be judged accurately. In fact, it seems unNintendo like to show games so early in development. Leads me to believe they feel they have something to prove, desperate almost.

Thats gonna be more art decisions than sheer technical wizardry though. A Mario game is just never going to allow for some total headfuck "how is this on screen!!!!" moment like more detailed games. Unless they go for some realtime artwork shit like Yoshi's Island in 3D rather than the totally clean Pixar CGI look. Clever use of shaders is only so far on the amaze-sauce spectrum.
