Edge: PS4 to launch in Europe in early 2014, US/JP 2013, more powerful than next Xbox

It's all about getting as many units under as many TV's as possible in the 2 single biggest markets before Microsoft can.

I'm pretty sure Europe is a bigger market than Japan now. But then there's no chance that Sony would neglect its home market.

Only slightly more powerful?

Naughty Dog, Sony Santa Monica, and Guerilla Games will put an end to that silly notion, lol.

I fully expect those three to blow everyone out of the water.
O that they will. There's not a single doubt in my mind that Sony first party devs will lead the console industry in terms of technical achievements in games. If they pulled off that crazy ass wizardry with PS3 hardware, I can only begin to imagine the crazy stuff they'll be able to deliver with PS4 hardware.

More power means nothing until I see which system gets the better versions of third party games (aka 95% of the best games this gen).

I'd expect 3rd party games to be near 1:1 this generation. The core silicon on both systems are close, not just in horsepower but in design and utilization. Development tools problems have already been fixed this current generation. End result will be 3rd parties coding to the least common denominator on both systems, knowing it will result in near effortless ports.

First parties will define the hardware gap, whatever that may be.

Probably lives in Europe

I live in Europe. We know nothing about either platform 100%, and we sure as hell don;t know enough about both to make a decision on which to go for if you were in any way not 100% going to go one way or another anyway.

SONY is going for the jugular this time, Northamerican market first, heck Japan will be either second or at the same time than North America, SONY is more than confident with the European market, a few angry guys threatening to buy the next xbox if they don't release sooner won't change that.
They need to sell as much consoles as fast as possible in the States and Canada where Microsoft reigns supreme, all PS4 skus manufactered will be allocated to USA/Canada, then after 3 or 4 months they'll start talking about Euro launch, SONY knows Euro guys will be there day one anyway.

lol they'd be stupid as hell to launch in US last next year. If they have any hope of regaining this territory they need to come out firing immediately.

Home systems don't launch outside of the Sept-Oct-Nov window in the US unless they want to fail. The last system that did was the Sega Saturn.

Some quality journalism for you. The Sun reports the PS4 'will feature EIGHT computer chips in its electronic “brain”'

So PS4 is 10 times more powerful than PS3. PS4 has eight computer chips. Does that mean that PS3 had 0.8 computer chips? That's not a lot of computer chips.

For reference, how many computer chips does the Wii U have?

Seriously when people complain about 'lol gamez journalizm', they need to keep in mind that real journalism is far worse in most cases (the Sun is the worst of the worst in my opinion though). ;_;

Two halves of a computer chip ducktaped together. amiright? :P

I'm fine waiting a few months. It hurts but makes that midnight launch all the much sweeter.

I don't really car is the PS4 is more powerful. The PS3 was more powerful and we all know how that worked out.

Biggest issue is the Dualshock. It needs to go. Such a horrible, outdated design.

The console will include the option to play older games and PS3 controllers will still work. It will also have a next generation ultra-HD player — the successor to Blu-ray — and let families view catch-up TV such as iPlayer and access films and music.
BC confirmed!

I'd suggest the Daily Star but I might be diluting the definition of 'journalism' too much.

I think Europe is last because they won't have enough units for lauch, so they cut their more important market because it's the safest one for them and it would mean to save a lot of units for day 1.

"a new Xbox console from Microsoft, which is likely to be launched in June"
wow

I think Japan should go last if any region has to wait.

I couldn't agree more. We could see this with MS since it is a lost cause over there anyway but I don't think we will with Sony just because they are a Japanese company and that gives WiiU two holidays by itself.

Constrained supply can sometimes be a benefit in accelerating hype and demand, so it could happen.

Microsoft just issued a response to Polygon in regard to Sony's February 20 event:

We welcome innovation in the category. It's an amazing time for the industry, and an even better time for Xbox 360 owners. At Xbox, we're focused on making the content you love even more amazing including blockbuster games, and new entertainment experiences. We're always thinking about what's next for our platform, but we don't have anything further to share at this time.

Exciting times for Xbox360 owners!

Oh, MS. Your PR is fucking terrible.

So Xbox 360 owners should be excited for Sonys reveal?

And Nintendo has done fuck all with one of them so far. I would rather give Nintendo two christmasses in Japan than give MS one Christmas in europe

I am.

I have two X360 in fact, so my excitement is twice as big.

I have three (heh). The only PlayStation I've ever owned is a PSone. And I am struggling to contain my excitement for February 20. When I consider that, it says a lot to me about my expectations for the next generation.

console mock up is pretty darn sweet.

Do any of you guys remember Microsoft's 2012 VGA dashboard advertising? They had adverts on the dashboard promoting a world premiere for 'The Last of Us'. It was insane.

gotta mindlessly pursue that ad revenue, who gives a shit what the customer sees on the dashboard!

Paper launch in Europe would be ok, with emphasis on primary markets. If it is technically launched but you can't get one due to lack of stock then there is more chance you'll hold on rather than just buying an xbox

Some quality Sun reader comments in that link!

You can tell this is fake because Home is still populated by nightmarish humanoids.

Try the Daily Mail, as I wouldn't be surprised if they threw in a "bloody foreigners" comment.

Oh who are we kidding, its easier to name the good print media (The Guardian was going to run a feature but they couldn't spell PS4)

That and they know that Microsoft doesn't care for Continental Europe so they don't feel threatened and don't see the need to be more aggressive here. It's a shame really, the region that performed the better relatively to the previous generation will get the shaft.

If Sony doubles the ram, I imagine ms would want to upgrade too.
Except at that point their design (low latency, DME etc) would be useless.

It's hard to speculate on that when we know practically nothing about it. Still, beefing up the GPU at the very least shouldn't be that hard.

That said, I don't think that it's Microsoft's imperative to have the best hardware, it should just be "good enough" and not too pricey. I think they'll try to differentiate their platform in other ways.

So 360 is hitting its stride?

2014 in Europe huh, that blows. Thank god Canada boarders the US or we would get everything last. Worst comes to worst I could just make the hour plus trip to the boarder and buy it there day 1 lol.
