League of Legends hits 5 million peak concurrent players.

Both communities are bad.

DotA 2 isnt inyourface as bad yet because Valve still hasnt officially opened the floodgates. Sure its easy as hell to get a key nowadays but its still an effort wall.

the community still terrible though?

I don't know if it's terrible but the few games I've gone in one with 2 friends had some real idiots. Even the two guys mentioned something about idiots in the community. You just have to ignore them.

Negative Riot posts are in fact very rare. I actually cant think of a recent example.

I saw one a while back that went on a huge tirade about why they wouldn't tell people why they were banned which basically came down to "You're a big boy, you figure it out." Obviously they've changed their position since then, since they do in fact tell people why they were banned.

Dota 2 isn't in closed beta.

It also doesn't need to be anywhere near those numbers to make a disgusting amount of profit for VALVe.

It technically is.

The only way you can get in is by invite. Valve still controls the population.

Open beta is anyone who wants in, can get in.

Dota may be a little more lax on the way people can get in, but it is still technically closed beta.

Not sure if serious but a ton of Brazilians play on American servers, not on their own. They mostly don't speak English so communication is tough.

Ya its not racism.

Brazilians are a serious problem in dota 2.

Its not fun to play when your teammates aren't communicating, feeding, constantly farming/not participating in team fights, and playing incorrectly (wrong build).

I think revenue is a better metric all round esp with other f2p games. You can then break down number of users and revenue into more insightful data.

How big was WoW at it's peak?

wow is not f2p so it's better to compare to other f2p games imo. Would like to see if wow usage is declining.

I would give this game a chance if I didn't have to put in hundreds of hours just to unlock a few Champions. Then you got these runes... Yeah... no thanks.

Well I ask, not to compare success financially, just to compare worldwide popularity of a videogame.

3 posts, damn.

League has this effect that WoW had, its kind of odd. It draws in people who normally don't play video games at all, or at least ones that are web browser based. I don't know if it is the artstyle, the laid back nature of the game or whatever else it may be.

I find the game enjoyable if I can play with a few friends, but honestly kind of boring if I just solo qeue.

How big was WoW at it's peak? what's the biggest game of all time?

Somewhere along 12 million, I don't think its concurrent was ever that high.

LoL is such an awesome game.
And you don't have to spend a freaking penny to play it.

Shame about the morons/trolls who play it as well. But with 5 million people it was going to attract the idiots.

Good for Riot. Well deserved for the most part. Would like to see better female designs, cheaper skin prices and less rubberneck balancing though. They killed my AD Kayle right after I bought an expensive skin for her.

I'm fair and balanced.

~6.5 million back in January, during the holiday sale.

Peaks at 5-5.5m nowadays.

yo archie ilu2

teach me how to dota

they didnt nerf AD kayle, AP kayle is just better

Phenomenal. League's real recent popularity spike is probably due to the Mac client and the incredible effort put into the competitive scene.

Great game that I myself was addicted to for about a year and a half. I ended up uninstalling the game and password protecting myself from leagueoflegends.com so that I never, ever install the game again. It really is a parasite on your mind when you get into it.

I now am more a free man today without it, but I can completely understand its popularity.

Our story is the same, you and I.

Oh well, that's the power of F2P. Even with these viewership numbers I think Starcraft will always have a better competitive scene and far superior community. Thus, we can remain kings of the e-sports business no matter how many people watching LoL streams.

Fuck teemo and his stupid mushrooms!

Those are incredible numbers.

I recently tried the Mac beta, and while I understand that it's a lot of fun and considerably more accessible (Call of Duty to Dota 2's Counter-Strike), I did not enjoy my time with it. I can't swallow the idea of most of a game's content being locked behind a paywall, and the characters are grotesqueries pulled straight from the 1990s Image Comics concept art vault. Came away pretty disappointed.

Sorry we don't have any complex heroes like skill shot, next on hit ability, gap closer and AoE ultimate. :'(

In a game with heroes like skeleton king and dragon knight don't even think about being sarcastic about LoL's champions. Dat complexity. Draven will mess you up.

There have been a few cases of Riot workers insulting players, sometimes see them posted on the official forums.
You can actually see a lot of them tiptoeing around it nowadays, they don't respond to bait as much or respond to it intelligently and indifferently if they do.

Every online community is going to have its less savory members in it. With the huge player base that LoL has, and when you factor in that you're going to be playing with potentially four random people for 20-50 minutes, you're going to see your share of people being idiots or just blasting other players for mistakes.

When you commit that much time for one game and the tide is turning against you, some people are going to mouth off to the guy going 4-9 or what have you. But really, let us all be thankful neither LoL or DotA has HoNs community.

Every time this argument pops out, I wonder if people are deliberately playing dumb or they are honestly unaware that even the simplest heroes in DOTA/DOTA 2 often have to rely on many "usable" items to be effective.

In League of Legends you have to do math. You have to count the minutes from when you kill dragon and blue golem. In Dota, all you need to do is see is the clock has hit X:00 yet.

Therefore LoL is the more complicated game for math geniuses and Dota is meant for more of a speak and spell level intellect

Yeah, but Dota 2 will eat the SC esports' pie.

(Is HotS good? I kinda lost interest after Wings of Liberty was so mediocre.)

skill shots are abilities that take skill you cant argue with that

oh shit what have you done?!!?

preface: dota does have a higher top end on mechanically demanding champions

but... an SK with armlet and BKB is still a champion with 3 abilities, only one of which is targeted.

Ogre Magi isn't complex. Random != complex. There's some really good heroes in DoTA (Ogre Magi: not one of them), but there's also a shitton of totally bland right clickers with way too many passives and no skill shots.
I think hes kidding
archie loves league too
hes one of those weird sympathiser peoples

Haha, I'm so sorry. The game is a nightmare, literally. I found myself dreaming about it where I was Heimerdinger and my turrets just kept disappearing into a void for no reason. It was awful. During my day, my music - even the calm relaxing stuff - had a sharper, competitive edge to it. My mood soured when I played the game and other people were like foreign creatures that I had lost all ways of communicating with. Eventually, I memorized all the stats of the characters and items and would come up with unique builds that capitalized on certain skills in class. League is an all consuming, terror inducing, time sucking monstrosity of a game. I can't return, not like this, not now. o.o

Our story is the same, you and I.

I'm so sorry. :'(

This just in: Variety of different playstyles available is now a bad thing.
