VGLeaks: First look as Durango XDK (always connected, kinect required, must install)

Always connected but not actually used to authorize games. That is one way to possibly read it. Most people have devices that are always on.

Current Xbox 360 have some big start-up times, and then, the log-in. Durango looks like an "always connected" (if you want) for no start-up times.

Because always online isn't required for PS Plus.
So? Why does "always online" bother you when it means you turn the console on and all of your apps, games and the system firmware is always up to date? It seems like some people are really reaching to try and spin that into a negative.

Now if you can't even use the console at all without an Internet connection, or you can't play any of your games offline, that would be something else, but there's nothing about that in the article.

Besides, the PS4 will do the same thing. It also has a low power state where it can download things in the background.

It's not that stupid really. Especially if, like PS4 downloads, they are designed to be playable while still installing.

It's still pretty dumb compared to making a PSP-style install option a requirement. There's a lot of data in a lot of games that has no reason to ever come off the optical disc, and play-during-install has a lot of weaknesses (sure, it works for Halo if you're just copying level-by-level on demand, but late-game RPGs with fast travel? Hell, GTA?)

Gaming from the optical disc is not supported. Therefore, if I run out of fridge space, I'm fucked.

I'm sure they'll at least let you delete and reinstall. No way they won't.

I swear everyone talking about the disk not being used = No used game act like they've never installed a 360 game before.

smh, typical GAF overreaction and faux outrage.

I hope the "always online" setup crashes and burns for them. That is definitely something I do not want to see becoming the standard.

I doubt they will though. They're able to pull off pay to play online after all.

if always online and kinect required are true i'm going back to sony then
ps4 is not that exciting but it's better than being watched by Ms

Must install from optical disk I don't mind, but if they plan on killing the rental/used game market they can choke on my dick next gen.

smh

yeah thats all i do is install games on my 360 kind of used to it now, thats why i said prior in this thread it reminds me of a PC since my PC is always connected anyways for alot of people this might not be an issue, I can see an issue with the kinect thing though...but for me personally i don't care I want ps4/720 still

I bought kinect when it was released in the UK for my kids, it's plugged in and always on, I very rarely use it but they do and enjoy playing with it.

Did that stop me enjoying countless non-kinect games, did it eff.

The countless wailing and gnashing of teeth and thanks for making my decision MS regarding kinect is laughable.

Yeah, it will only be Sony and 1000's of players stalking your gameplay feeds that will be watching you.

This will be the most interesting E3 ever.....Durango sounds like a completely new beast in the console scene... if SimCity always online caused such an uproar I cant imagine what Durango will do

Breaks my heart hearing about Kinect and connection required, if it turns to be true then I'll be rocking the Wii U-Steambox combo.

I can see where the internet connection required rumor would have come from. Somebody misunderstanding what always on, always connected is talking about.

The 360 can install all games to the hard drive and also allows used games. Not mutually exclusive concepts.

But it's not required to do.

I've been an Xbox fanboy for ten years, and I have almost zero interest in Durango. Times: they are a changin'.

I understand that, if the online means that if your machine is disconnected you can't play anything, then Microsoft can root in hell. But I assume that what the always online means is just that the machine is always on stand-by, searching updates and things.

What I don't get is the negativity for Kinect 2.0, it's packed with the machine, what's the problem? It's not going to be mandatory in everygame, and if it evolves the tech from the actual Kinect it can be a pretty great adition to Durango.

Wait, how are people reading "Always connected" as "Requires online connection".

This could just mean that there's always an internet connection pumping updates and such into your console, even on standby.

But let's jump to more conclusions.
Unless I'm missing something obvious.

Don't mind/care about Kinect, if everyone has one hopefully it will improve the uses made of it but I can elect not to use it if I don't want to.

But the always connected/must install (no used games) are concerning, I hope it turns out to be not true.

- Always on, Always connected

no one is trying to hear this right now MS

Did you skip all the words around it? They're talking about being online while the system is off. It doesn't tell us anything about their DRM strategy (which may require being online)

You're not missing anything; that's exactly what it says they're talking about (and it is the same thing announced for PS4). That doesn't mean they're not going for online DRM but it isn't discussed in that screenshot

That is why you can start playing after a few second installing.
Kinda like Diablo 3 install.

Always online as in sim city and diablo 3 no thanks.

But the game won't install if there isn't enough space.

The question is, how many games would you be able to install? We'd have to be realistic on HDD size for a console that has to have it included.

Would it be 1TB? 3TB?

You have to realise that there is 16 times the RAM in these systems and only 3 times the disc speed compared to last gen. A disc.only load would take ages anyway if it was filling the memory with disc assets.

If all this stuff is true, there's no chance I'll even consider Microsoft's next console. What horrible stuff.

I've been an Xbox fanboy for ten years, and I have almost zero interest in Durango. Times: they are a changin'.

Well, we know pretty much zero truth around Durango anyway. All guesswork and rumors at this point. E3 will be very interesting, for good or bad.

The EDGE and VGleaks rumors saying it requires an online connection, this is just adding on to that.

The people at Microsoft have to be shitting their pants. All of this was definitely set in stone long before the SimCity fiasco. Up until then, they were probably thinking, "Well, Diablo 3 had some problems, but it's been really successful and gamers seem to have relaxed about the always-online situation". I think SimCity probably changed that sentiment with a lot of gamers. It's too late for Microsoft to turn back now though.

Look for a lot of fake smiles and dead eyes at E3 as they try to sell this as a positive at their press conference.

If either of those things was to prevent used games then surely it would have said it in the documents, right?

Always online = updates and crap
Install games = BRDrive is not fast enough (Could be the same with the PS4).

Yeah, I'm pretty sure PS4 will be doing the same thing. I actually remember thinking a quote from Sweeny about not having to worry about loading from optical media next gen was weird but it makes sense now.

"Always connected" is probably going to be a big component for both Microsoft and Sony, basically making any and all maintenance/downloading as seamless and unintrusive as possible.

Blu-Ray sized games being the norm is going to mean huge digital downloads, a console operating and downloading stuff while a person is at work or sleeping is basically a must for how big game downloads could be.

Or if you leave the console on sleep mode/stand by and any games you have installed automatically get patched.

Right...so why are people freaking out about this? Just wanting to pile on?

Pretty much.

Heh, just one more month and change until we get some official confirmations. Going to be very interesting.

No way in the world would I buy this. Spending good money on something that will stop working at some point not determined by me? No thanks.

But I would rent it or get it under a subscription. Having this option is still the only way it all makes sense to me.
