The Last Of Us - Off screen footage from PAX East

What's the way of dealing with clickers? Try to avoid as much as humanly possible?

You can sneak up on them and do a stealth kill on them or shoot them in the head. But of course shooting will alert any others that may be in the area.

Yeah the UI is god awful. What are they thinking with that?

It isn't finalized according to Neil during the interviews after they showed it it the press.

I think the list was saying that the feature would be something that you can disable in options, or something along those lines. I don't think that was a cutscene. Looked the same to me like when in E3 demo he start strangling someone from behind - the camera zooms a lot so that you can see their face.

If a clicker gets close enough to you there's nothing you can do, from the looks of it-- auto death. They need to be prioritized and dealt with by sneaking up on them from behind or bullets.

There are a whole lot of people who believe an option ruins things just by being there. Just check out a Forza thread sometime and search for rewind lol

Not watching the videos. Want to go into it more or less blind.

If it's there, people will use it, even if they don't think it should be in the game.

It's optional to use, but what benefit do you get in the game from not using it? Seems like using it slows you down (according to the interview) so it's a trade off to movement speed, but it doesn't seem like a game where you can run around too much judging from that gameplay, when the guy went in running he died every time.

Just wondering, does the crafting allow suppressor ( bottles) to be added to guns?

I know they are not actually silent, but it's a game and would be a good addition, adding a bottle suppressor could allow like 1 or 2 shots before it breaks or something.

Yep,seems to me people were trying to play this like any other game.

Ideal in-game UI

Nothing, except for a minimalistic crosshair. Only flash a number/icon on the screen to tell me what/how many bullets I'm picking up, swapping

All items visible, either on Joel or in his backpack. Make me remember how much ammo I have and how many useful items I have. Make it so that I can only reliably check my resources when its quiet and I'm in no immediate danger

If I lose track of Ellie, give me a button to call her to me, or have her make a noise that you can locate with a good sound setup

If I lose health, show me how much I have left by changing Joel's animation and appearance, and have him make noises to show you that he's struggling

That would be fantastically immersive

Hopefully even slealth kills make a bit of noise

A lot of times it does, look at instinct mode in Hitman Absolution.

I don't think it will in this game since this seems like something that's actually optional as in the game wasn't designed around it. It wouldn't be hard to design the game like they wanted to and then tack on a see through walls ability at the end.

Yea I like how they talk about being immersed into the world and then HELLO x-ray vision.

Unfortunately too few people have 5.1/7.1 surround sound systems for actual sound to be an effective method of awareness. Given most people just use the sound that comes out of their stereo TV speakers (i.e non directional), the x-ray vision is a necessity.

Ah shit.

Just realised that ifthe game is as reliant on sound as we're being led to believe, I might have to use the wall-hack thing.

I only have like 25% hearing in my right ear, and only really play games with headphones on :(

One day we'll get headphones that can have each ear's volume adjusted...

What about people who DOES have a surround sound setup? It's no fun at all knowing where the enemies exactly are. It's supposed to be scary. Just make it optional, everyone will be happy.

While it being added is a little annoying ( but not a problem, can be useful for quite a few reason) it's the WAY its implemented that is really the annoying part. Way too obvious and easy.

It is though. You're not forced to use it at all.

It would have been put in after that E3 demo at least. Remember Joel goes into the room then backs up when he sees someone. Looks good in a demo, but they probably just wanted to avoid that situation with the inevitable aggressive gamers who pick this up. What with the lack of ammo etc.

The city looks amazing. Great sense of scale. That one guy he stealth killed only dropped 2 bullets. Yay.

Listen mode doesn't seem too bad. In the third IGN video, it shows the foot steps of the infected and gives you an outline near the most recent ones. It makes sense, but I'll be using it sparingly.

Oh wow you can see through walls even in this game? Come on. That better be a toggle option.

Were you expecting a hardcore game from Naughty Dog? I'm guessing it's integral to the game and it'll make the game just frustrating if you toggle it off because the game might be designed with it in mind much like Tomb Raider and Hitman Absolution.

I've yet to see a game with an instinct mode that is as enjoyable when toggled off.

you don't think the game is hardcore enough? they show a bunch of people playing the demo, all use this xray vision, and all three still died during the demo, at some point the video kinda feel like let's see how the next guy is gonna die series. lol

It IS optional. If you don't want to use the x-ray sensitivity feature, don't.
Is it optional like "then don't click R3" or optional like in the games menu you have to disable it and start a new play through? Very, very big difference.

It should be an anytime menu thing I think, not restricted to a new game option. What if one day you're playing with surround-sound, so you don;t need to see through walls, then the next you're playing it through headphones and have dodgy hearing in one ear, or through the TV

The listening button is not that bad.
First of all, you don't have to use it, so whatever, but even then, the game has few bullets/weapons, and enemies easily one shot you and from what we've seen, there are a lot of situations where you can get aggroed quickly.
With all this going on, they give you a "wallhack" that only works when you're stationary, in a limited range, and ONLY if said enemies are actually making noises.
It may not be 100% realistic, but unless you have a 5.1 or some headphones to play with, it's impossible to tell where the sound it's coming from, like you'd do in real life, with TV speaker (which is how most people will be playing with) so it balances out "the realism".

This is still a story driven game, meant to be played by the public at large, mind you, it's already plenty bold, in that sense.

Looks very much like a current gen 3rd person action adventure game, not nearly as exciting as the E3 trailer

Only because the people are trying to play it like a 3rd person action adventure game, and dying each time, mind you.

And of course it looks current gen. It's a current gen game.

I'm sure they could just add the option in the menu if there are enough demands. Not really an issue tbh.

Also keep in mind these are infected encounters. I don't think anyone has demoed a section against humans (?)

I hope it lives up to the hype.

What the hell happened to the shooting?

In the E3 demo, the camera zoomed in tight when shooting and it gave it a great feeling of weight...

Seems like they completely changed it.

Example

Shooting in E3 Demo

Shooting in New Demo

The times it zooms it seems to be when he's aiming behind cover/human shield. Could also be that you need to click in a stick or something to zoom.

It's darker graphics because it's raining. Turn the listen mode off or don't use it if you don't like it. Buy some cheap headphones or use your 5.1 surround sound instead. Try NOT to ignore all the other pictures we've seen from the game that suggest varying types of game play and environments ... you may end up judging it incorrectly (or perhaps even want to)

The sound aspect could be absolutely incredible if there are sections where you can hear heavy rainfall substantially masking the noises you want to listen out for

I am ok with the whole wall-hack thing if they keep that stuff on easy/normal difficulty levels. Hard and above should be free of such shitty gimmicks. The UI still sucks tho, it's a fuckin eyesore! Especially how they highlight items that you can pick up, I thought they went for subtlety in this game. The rest looks great!

Everything also looks early game/Boston. Hope to see all different kinds of environments throghout.
