Videogame facts that blow your mind (SuperMarioBros. SHOCKING SECRET INSIDE p #70)

Here's one I just found out about on a rather hidden gem of a game Secret of Evermore, which I find neat and wish more dev's did this kind of hidden stuff.

So that strange skeleton in that rowboat guy, who can bring you across the desert instantly instead of arduously having to go by foot, will outright reject taking you if you've named your main character something profane, even if you got the item he wants.

I was trying to verify this. Couldn't find anything, but I did find this about a secret ending teasing a sequel and a couple of joke credits if you leave the game running for a couple of minutes after the The End title.

YouTube comment: "But in the opening of Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon he is sitting in a C rank Mansion....THE CONTINUITY!!!"

That's where the Mario timeline splits in two! One leads of Mario Kart and the other to Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon!

Just like Zelda. And Bubble Bobble.

Hahaha, I feel sorry for anyone piecing together a Mario timeline...or Bubble Bobble

In Metroid, the "Varia Suit" is actually a mistranslation of "Barrier Suit".
Which is fine by me, because "Varia" sounds more exotic
Probably not, I would say. The Japanese version of Super Metroid specifically says "Varia" in both the manual and the game. Although they could have made the change based on an earlier mistranslation, I suppose.
Well, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a mistranslation. I mean "Suitless" => "Zero Suit," sheesh.

In Kid Icarus, the greek word parthena ("maiden", a title of the goddess Athena) became Palutena. Nintendo seem attached at their "creative" translations!

Someday if I'm ever truly bored, I will attempt to make a Mario timeline.
Mamma Robotnik tried a long time ago. I don't remember the explanation for the Mario Sports games where Mario is seen side-by-side with his baby self or if Donkey Kong was counted as part of the timeline.

"Hey. How do I jump in this game?"
"Press the purple button."
"Matey, they're all purple."
Kirby Super Star does refer to the purple buttons in its tutorial while showing the SNES controller. For the European release, Kirby's Fun Pak they replaced the controller graphic but did not edit the text. I can't figure out how to get twitter images to hotlink so heres a tweet instead

I just started playing Super Mario RPG and in the battle sequences it has each action coded for either light or dark purple depending on its orientation in relation to ABXY. Useless with my Super Famicom controlller, but still cool, hehe.

In a similar vein, Earthbound had some dialogue changed from the Japanese version to the American. When referencing the controller to open the map, the character in Japan says the colored button assigned, in America they say the top button on the pad.

Probably just a coincidence but SquareEnix's Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX has both Re:Chain, and Kingdom Hearts Final Mix in it. Kind of mind blowing.

In Resident Evil Code Veronica if you equip the lighter you can ward off the bats.

Cool I never knew that, the area shown can be completely bat-less if you walk only in that bathroom area, but the other spot
near the sea plane
that can be really useful!

That video brings up the darkness in the HD version, I find that some areas are ruined in HD because there is no fog effect and instead darkness, the first graveyard fmv shows the huge difference when it changes from a pure black graveyard to a pale foggy one.

Maybe not mind-blowing, but I just realized that the "they said" meme was originally inspired by a Warcraft quote. Although that Warcraft quote is also a reference to an old running gag in the Asterix Comics :

"____, they said" didn't originate with Warcraft or Asterix. It's the beginning of an Irving Berlin poem that became a sarcastic turn of phrase.

I've yet to pick up the HD version but I've got this retro vibe going on so I thought I'd check out a review. In the same video apparently killing one of the bosses with the sniper rifle or knife gets you a little cut scene. I knew of the sniper rifle bit but not the knife. Also the FPS view with the rifle reveals stuff that is normaly hidden with the fixed camera. Not sure if I remember this entirely but still was really neat thing to see. Wonder if this can be used to find other hidden stuff in other areas of the game.

Is it "They Say It's Wonderful" ? I looked up the lyrics but it doesn't read too similar to the way it's phrased in the meme, while the meme mirrors the original joke of Asterix, with its two-parts complaining. Besides, the joke in Asterix refers to a French recruitment campaign in 1938 ("Engage, re-engage"), and the original wording sounds even further from Berlin's lyrics ("Engagez vous, rengagez vous qu'y disaient !"). It's not impossible that Goscinny mixed it with Berlin's poem, but it seems unlikely.

For what it's worth, knowyourmemes attributes the meme to Warcraft, though. But it looks like Warcraft is full of references to different shows (http://www.billionquotes.com/index.php/Warcraft_II : "the Sky if falling" (Asterix too), "Snatch the pebble from my hand, grasshopper." (Kung Fu), "Soylent gray is made from TROLLS?" (obvious...),...)

Yeah, I wouldn't trust knowyourmeme as a source here. Most of the Warcraft jokes are references to other things, and "join the army, they said" dates back to WWII-era humor, I believe.

Yeah, Jesus Christ I think I heard it in a Looney Tunes cartoon once. I can't believe some people thought it originated with WoW memes...

Maybe this is common knowledge but I was just reading the Super Mario World manual and it points out the sunken ghost ship and how it is the same ship from Super Mario Bros. 3. Meaning Mario defeated Bowser and kids and they crash landed onto Dinosaur Island somehow kidnapping Peach again.

Um yeh. Mario, Luigi, and Peach all went there for vacation. Pretty bad coincidence.

The last battle with Bowser was in Peach's castle, too.

That means they must've limped away on one of the earlier airships.

What? No.

SMB3 the final battle is in the Dark World. SMW the last battle is in an equally as dark area. If anything it was a Boom Boom who was on board, that explains why there was a ? Ball at the bottom of the ship in SMW.

Typo, I meant Bowser's castle, not Peach's; meaning that it wasn't an airship that they fought in last.

I just realised something today, cant believe I never connected the dots.

Everyone knows sheng long from street fighter is simply chinese for dragon punch. Capcom slid another Chinese word in another game, the original breath of fire. 蘑菇 is translated as mo2 gu1 which means mushroom. Sure enough, mogu is tiny and looks like a mushroom, plus his people live in caves. Nothing earth shattering but one of those DUH moments.

Nope, but almost: it's 'the rising dragon". (and ofc, the srk is the "rising dragon punch".)

"Mogu" is probably from "mogura", Japanese for "mole".

If I recall correctly, Pride Lands (or a level based on the Lion King) was planned to be in KH1, but was cut because they couldn't figure out a way to properly program a quadrupedal Sora at that point in time.

But I definitely recall that the "chainsaw lion" Sora was meant to be his regular appearance for the whole series before they went with a, imo, better design.

Wow. I think I remember reading that but not taking it in as a kid. Of course I always skip the tutorials so I haven't seen that in years. That's the problem when they never really bothered localising the American to British.

I just started playing Super Mario RPG and in the battle sequences it has each action coded for either light or dark purple depending on its orientation in relation to ABXY. Useless with my Super Famicom controlller, but still cool, hehe.
Well in the Japanese version it did make sense.

I'm sure French Natives realized this, but I found out that France is called l'Hexagone due to its shape.

Generation 6 of Pokemon, X and Y, is taking place in France. :P

Not really mind blowing but Nintendo of America twitter has been posting Nintendo Easter eggs every day this week. I thought I'd repost them here for people who haven't seen them.
I enjoyed 70% of these.

Actually, they're not bad. I had no idea about the second player in the star throwing game.

From NoA twitter.

"Nintendo Easter Egg #8: On the Wii YouTube channel, watch all the Rhythm Heaven Fever trailers (including the launch trailer) in order and write down the red letters. Then, go into the game and enter the secret message for a surprise!"
TXTMSG"S

Not entirely sure if that " is suppose to be there or not.

I don't get this at all.

One of the comments:

"I'm just gonna come out and tell the secret behind the letters. Watch all three of the trailers and then put the capital letters together to form a code. Then, if you own the game, go to the "Police call" rhythm toy and enter the code in the cell phone :)"

The letters are TXTMSGS but I don't have the game and can't check what it does.
