[RUMOR] Paul Thurrott: Xbox 720 is expensive: $500 or $300 for sub model, 5/21 Unveil

You don't know for sure that it is weaker, they have announced nothing. You also don't know the price of the PS4, it could easily be $500 as well.

To be fair, he added an "if true" to qualify his statement.

And, to be even more fair, the rumors certainly haven't pointed to the Durango being more powerful than the PS4.

Why would Sony use a lower MSRP when they don't have to, they should be confident in their product's features that they could justify a higher price tag.

Why would a company in dire financial straits repeat the same mistake that screwed over their previous console? IIRC, the Playstation brand is the only thing keeping Sony afloat at the moment, which is why so much is invested in it. They're not in any position to take a huge loss per console, but they sure as hell aren't doing the opposite either.

Console manufacturers need to justify their consoles against other multimedia devices by providing similar (or superior) connectivity and services with lower prices. Fighting a price war with mobile will only screw them over.

Probably been covered, but I don't understand what I'm paying $300 for a "subscription model" for - that implies I pay $300, then even more on top of that on a monthly/quarterly/annual basis. I don't get it.

Lower upfront cost makes Average Joe think he's getting a deal, especially seeing as how he pays for Live anyway (and smart phone plans).

lol

No i understand that, look to put it another way, if Sony hadn't released their specs yet, we would all still be creaming over the fact that the 720 has '8gig of ram!, so much for the 2gig everyone thought we'd get!'.

Sony simply raised the bar.

Ok, that makes sense.

I would like to think if they eliminate used sales (which until we go 100% digital, probably won't happen) that the Live Marketplace will become more akin to Steam with seasonal sales with huge discounts.

Their is no reason. They have monopolistic control over all sales.

It's not like Steam where their is competition and you aren't the only source.

So Sony got the RAM 100% right whereas Microsoft got zero?
Yes, Sony going with a large amount of fast RAM is far better than MS who are going with a large amount of slow RAM (with the OS eating 3GB of that). Of course MS also have 32MB of ESRAM to offset that to some extent.

I guess shrinking your profit margins per-unit is the solution.

That'd be nice, but probably wishful thinking.

32MB? Is eSRAM expensive or something?

The DDR3 ram is not a negative, i'm sorry it isn't. Its not as fast as PS4 ram but its not too long ago that people were thinking that we'd get 2gig of ram and maybe 4gig if we were damn lucky........apart from that yeah i agree!.

I highly suggest you buy an nvidia gt640 3GB for your gaming rig

3 GB ddr3 ram, sli support, dx11 , cuda, physx, wow so amazing, wow.

3GB ddr3, wow.

(I guess it's from people like you that the OEM market makes its money)

A subscription model, in addition to paying for gold monthly, on an internet-only machine, with that eye-toy thingee required, ugghhhhhhhhhh. I'm still holding out hope that this stuff isn't true, if it isn't...well hopefully PS4 launches at $400, because nextbox won't be an option for me.

Of all the rumors we've heard recently, Thurrott's actually seem to be the least threadworthy. He's mostly speculating and the only scraps of info he seems to really have is online connection required and the possible date for the next Xbox event. Other than that the price points he's discussing and most of the other details (lack of BC, for example) are pure speculation.

More and more I'm starting to think this was my last generation of really being a "gamer".

The vocabulary is definitely going to change, for better or for worse. I mean, it's already changing. These aren't really gaming consoles anymore, they're set top boxes that will offer up a smorgasbord of entertainment into your living room.

That'd be nice, but I honest believe it's wishful thinking.

Yea, but with the push Microsoft is already making for all digital, I can see their Marketplace becoming better overall. I don't think it'll ever be identical to Steam on the sales side, but it will be closer as the next generation progresses and internet speeds increase globally.

Why would it be $500, using weaker tech than PS4 to boot?

No BC doesn't bother me, got a 360, no used games doesn't either, always buy new. I also have my internet on all the time I'm playing. But $500 is way too steep for me, unless they show some incredible games I won't jump in straight away.

Still I'm starting to wonder what rumours are BS, no rumours on HW suggest $500 price point.

I'm not sure Sony is in the position to eat losses of $50+ on its console, although they could try to offset this with screwing European consumers again.

If the Kinetic is rumored to be $150 and Microsoft is not taking a loss.

Without Kinetic the 720 would be $350

Why is $50 for a slightly beefed up console without expensive eram so outrageous?

PS4 for $399 without the eyetoy included seems reasonable.

Kinect 2.0 in every box.

I guess shrinking your profit margins per-unit is the solution.

The solution, as always, lies between murdering yourself with per-unit losses (PS3) and making a killing on the few units being sold (Vita). It's also important to establishing marketshare since the cheaper loss leaders models do so faster but cost you more.

But again: After knowing what's going into these machines, $500 is just absurd. Hell, not even that Dual APU thing we keep hearing about would inflate the BOM that much.

You pay for the privilege to play multilayer games, pay to delay demos for non-gold users, pay for the ability to simply access netflix and hulu and other streaming services [who all demand their own separate subscriptions].

And there is off course unknown TV functionality with HDMI-IN.

Apple is a lot more popular than Microsoft at the moment, they have the power of brand loyalty and consumer zeal surrounding mobile devices behind them.

Microsoft (and Sony) are struggling with a market that's being ignored for mobile and tablets, and competing with them in terms of multimedia devices.

I think it's a bit far-fetched to say that people are leaving home consoles behind for gaming on mobile phones and tablets. Microsoft and Sony haven't released a new system since 2005 and 2006 respectively. Hardware sales may seem like they're on the decline since everyone who wanted a home console has already brought one by now. Also, in terms of quality, mobile devices are a long way off from matching the games that comes on a home console. To me, it's like comparing apples to oranges at this point.

I'm wondering if MS will bring their announcements forward. They simply can't afford to let a month and a half of bad press to circulate at this stage.

You'd think Microsoft would learn after looking at Windows 8 and Surface sales. They don't have the prestige Apple has in its brand.

They probably want to wait it out and see if the whole Windows 8 ecosystem pans out after Durango is on the market. It's a key part of the equation.

PlayStation is not the only thing keeping Sony afloat , it means a fair amount to them yes but so do other things for eg smartphones .
Truth is i have no idea why either of these systems should cost more than $400 unless the want to make profit day 1 .

So then you do believe there will be a cheaper sku. Ok, I agree with that. Imo there will be a $429-449 model that includes a very good size HDD, and all other features as the high end model. IMO the higher end model wil just include. ps+ subscription and bigger HDD.
I have no clue. I'm just confident that the PS4 will be known for having a $500 price point. Much like the PS3 is known for $599 US dollars, even though there was a cheaper sku.

Well, they'd have to start informing journalists around the world now to make travel plans if they wanted to start something.

Sony is making "a killing" on (each) Vita? News to me.

Are people say9ing the $300 subscription model is expensive? Looks wicked cheap in comparison no?

15 bucks x 24 months = 360 bucks

360 bucks + 300 bucks (console) = 660 dollars!!!

Pretty cheap... right...

PS4: 500 (I'm guessing) + PS Plus (100 dollars for 2 years)

Total: 600 dollars... and for a best machine and a really best service.
