I know some people might like it, but the increased fantasy turns me off. I'm just picturing in my head dragons fighting white Walkers, shape shifters and large trolls fighting blue eyed zombies, etc. Fireballs and shadow monsters etc.

On a related note, how long was that sorcerer in Varys' crypt? It looked like he was gagged and yet the coffin was like nailed shut for a long time. How did he keep him alive?

I would also prefer if the supernatural stuff had been restricted to only subtly intervening deities, and things like Brand's dream visions, etc. The wildfire went a bit far for me, and now that there are zombies, sorcerers, warlocks, etc. I'm starting to lose my interest. I preferred the political side of the story.

It's still riveting, but I don't feel so impressed as I did in the first season.

It looks like he's been in there a while, possibly for transporting him to the capital. There are a few shots of Tyrion looking at the air holes in the side of the crate. It looks like he was trying to claw his way out as his fingers are cuts and there's blood along the inside the crate.

I'm assuming that sorcerers (and warlocks)have a high tolerance for death. Pyat Pree (sp?) needed to be killed by dragon fire due to all his illusions. OR perhaps the same potion that was used of Varys was used on the sorcerer and because he couldn't move/use energy it helped conserve him.

The very first scene of the show is zombies killing humans.

would be interesting to learn who is behind the wraiths wights and white walkers/what drives them South, though that's probably something they'll keep for later seasons. I'm curious if they get to the wall by the end of this season

I was expecting the white walkers to be a major thing in S3 and so far there has been zip.

If it didn't have the looming threats it would feel very small in scope and I'd lose interest. Seeing how all this plays out is going to be a huge payoff -- at least I hope.

I skipped shows like the Tudors, Bourgeois and the like for this. Medieval politics where nothing's at stake is boring to me.

I also have to say I am impressed that show-only watcher are able to follow always what happens. The show is sometimes so dense with information, it's hard to believe someone would be able to catch all this.

That's because the writers, directors and editors have done a masterful job of providing lots of detail very quickly.

It's because of that attention to detail I'm still waiting to be vindicated on my theory that the new gods the southerners worshipped aren't real but the ones worshipped by the Northerners (well one since they only followed that god whose image was seared into the Tree by Winterfell while the southernors abandoned the older gods for newer false gods), and the bandits & people living in Dragonstone (where Stannis Baratheon rules) are real and are making their own power plays to be the last one true god.

that unsullied bit was probably one of the best scenes in the show so far.

Is there even anything supernatural about wildfire? I kind of assumed it was just a volatile, highly flammable liquid, like a medieval napalm. Even if the alchemists said it was magical, I'd put that down as them being theatrical.

Also, yeah, the walkers are literally the first scene of the whole series. It's not like they're out of nowhere.

wha

Wildfire isn't supernatural.

Thank you deafmutes... I now understand why there is such a backlash against book readers. It seems that they can't help post little things that they forget can't be discussed.

But while we're talking about that scene, what ravens was Tarly supposed to send? Because the last thing they were doing was shoveling snow before they ran. Was he ever asked to send ravens?

He was in charge of caring for the ravens and was supposed to send them out in case of attack. He dropped the ball and they didn't get sent.

The wildfire in the series is based on Greek Fire, which was a real incendiary weapon. Interestingly historians and scientists still don't know exactly how it was created. So there's nothig supernatural there.

This reminds me, I was watching a twitch stream and people were whispering the guy in game GOT spoilers. Pretty sure it was mostly fake stuff, but heh.
Back on topic, I really enjoyed this episode. I have a questing for anyone who remembers from past seasons, is there anyone to take command of the night watch now that lord Mormont is dead?

Send them back to the Wall? Was he supposed to warn the wall in case of attack? But does this mean the white Walkers are marching on the wall?

This is why I'm confused. So how far is this fist of the first men from the wall? From Craster's house? And possibly where the Wildlings are?

But I can't wait. I wish they showed more of Jon with the Wildlings, I wanted to see him and Ygritte have some dialogue, see him show his skills to Mance etc.

Put me in the camp that is confused about the Samwell stuff as well.

Dave Inc. do you know what episode it was where they told Sam to look after the ravens? I'd like to go back and watch it.

Also, about the geography North of the Wall. Currently, I'm assuming, the Night's Watch are furthest South (currently fighting at Craster's Keep). Then are the White Walkers just behind them, and the Wildlings are the furthest North?

And we don't know why the White Walkers are coming South, do we?

Well obviously if the scouting party is attacked, the people back at the wall would want to know.

But would it even make a difference by then? 'hey guys, we just got our ass handed to us by mythical white walkers, they're coming with hundreds of wights and possibly 200+ fresh dead nights watch wights as well, good luck'.

I don't remember him being asked to send the ravens though, but I'll have to go back and check. Then again, they have the wall as a defence no? They'd know something was up when they don't get any ravens for a while and possibly see from the top that the blizzard or large herd of wights was coming? Not like a few days or weeks would make any difference?

Sorry, I know that was dumb of me. I wish they'd add another bit to the opening credits and show north of castle black, just so we could get a hint of where things are.

I think another problem is we don't get an accurate way to gauge the passing of time. For all we know, it could have taken them months to reach the fist of the first men etc.

That seems like a rather unreliable mode of communication compared to just sending a raven :P

Yeah you're right. I wonder why those who blew the horn to warn the people caught on the bottom or whatever couldn't send a raven, I mean poor Sam is lucky he's even alive.

Maybe I'm just dense but I still have no idea what's been going on with Theon's situation since the ending of last season. Are these Bolton's bastard's men who are torturing him? Or were they sent from the Iron Islands?

I can't figure out how Theon has traded hands, and to whom, since being knocked out by his men last year.

This.
Jamie is murderous, sister fucking, back stabbing cunt with a daddy-complex.
He attempted to murder an innocent kid, and they even had a flashback scene for Bran to remind the viewers of this.

Sure, he's been acting a tiny bit nice towards Brianne, but that's because it serves him best to have this strong lady on his side.

I think it is funny how people forget that Jamie also sweet talked a gentle soul who guarded him while held captive (the son of one of those guys fighting with Rob) and then snapped his neck. That actually made me hate him more, but I still find him a compelling character. I like that there are some grey zones with the them opposed to just being 100% evil.

I agree with most of the opinions regarding this episode. It was my favourite episode even if it was missing a bit on certain characters and a bit predictable. In regards to the night watch guards, even if they acted reckless it is easy to sympathize with them with the way they acted. They were exhausted and hungry while they had to accept everything that rotten person had to say or did. I think it is unfortunate that the guard/raven watch leader got killed as I liked his character, but the outlaws had to act or end up getting killed themselves. The circumstances easily made this possible.

We don't know yet.

Yeah they really need to spell some of this out soon. I would guess they're Bolton's men, since they were surrounded last season, but I do wonder what happened to everyone else. Did they give up Theon? Did they fight? Why was Winterfell burned?

I'd also guess that the dude leading Theon around could be Bolton's bastard, since that one guy referred to him as a bastard, and there wouldn't be much of a reason to refer to him like that story-wise unless it was some sort of key hint.

Sam needs to die. Seriously. Your commander who saved your ass gets stabbed? You run away with some daughter and her baby.

You have one job to take care of Ravens? You fuck up.

He's absolutely useless.
