Agreed. The lighting was actually one of my favorite things about vanilla. Shooting magickal flares into pitch-black wilderness, being enveloped by natural early morning ambiance, watching your party's enchanted weaponry glow warmly against the backdrop of a setting sun...

Indeed - the bosses are very reactive to where you hit them and what type of attack you use. It's a blast trying to kill a chimera in a different way every time you encounter one. Is there any way to save the snake for last?
I think it's a perfectly legitimate way of playing, but I don't think DD demands too much of it unless you're doing it for its own sake.

This escort to Gran Soren is insane. I chose to start it at night as well. The atmosphere of this game..I dunno man..this game is a gem. It's sad to think this game didn't catch on.

Depending on the game and just how far you're going I wouldn't necessarily say "instead of playing the game" at least, but it definitely is about focusing on optimization, perhaps specializing in very specific (potentially game breaking) ways. Doesn't really seem to be worth sweating for this given how stupidly powerful you get (well, maybe Bitterback Isle changes that), nevermind that it's fun to try out different play styles if it doesn't make your stats optimal. Serious min/maxing should be saved for a NG+ when you know what you like I think.
Yes, having the right enhancement can make Great Cannon really powerful. Plus since you are wearing heavy armor, you'll survive some shots that may have killed other classes.
This game is going to bomb harder than the original, hopefully this is not the end of DD.

I don't believe there is 'one true way' of playing any game. However, that mind set becomes a problem when it is so ingrained that you have players seemingly paralyzed over what starting vocation to choose, as has been evidenced in this thread.
I have a very unoptimized character, having dipped into all the non spell caster vocations, and I'm perfectly fine. I'm only now having 'difficulty' in Bitterblack Isle at level 112, but I think that may be because of the first Dragon's Dogma instance of level scaling, not my 'build.'
In the context of Dragon's Dogma min-maxing typically involves rushing through the start of the game to reach Gran Soren at precisely level 10, then changing your vocation to either Assassin or Sorcerer and remaining as that vocation until you reach level 200. It ain't exactly a recipe for a varied play experience, in other words, and the game isn't anywhere near so difficult as to make it necessary, so it seems a bit pointless to stringently limit yourself for 99% of the game just so you can steamroll peeps for a while in the post-game.

Climb on anything twice your size to kill it. Do side quests. Don't worry the game really picks up after you get to the capital city which is a quest or so after the first major boss.
Oh and don't be scared to play around with other vocations! After you get to gran soren you can pick a new one at the inn whenever you want.
I agree, I'm playing the game by doing a fair bit of experimenting in how I play my character because I believe the game is designed with this in mind. If I feel dedicated enough to make a second character and replay the entire game (afterall, there is a trophy for that!
) then maybe I'll consider a stricter approach so I can have a little added benefit in post-game, but outside of that notion I think it is madnessI hope more people try this game now that it's at a lower price point. it really is quite interesting and I see tons of potential here for how a successor on next gen platforms could end up being as good or better than anything bethesda is likely to do
I think in general the best approach to questions about min-maxing characters is to say that it's not necessary to experience everything in the game and that you shouldn't feel compelled to do it, but if it's appealing to you anyway then, hey, here's how to do it. Go nuts, and have fun.
I'm probably only saying this because every time the subject comes I start off with the intention of just saying not to bother then end up writing a quick-and-dirty guide to min-maxing anyway, so it may be I'm just trying to make excuses for myself.

What vocation? If you're anything but fighter, stay away from shit. Have your finger ready to hit select to heal. This game seems to really put emphasis on gear, ANY gear, meaning even the shitty gear that's available at the very first store you come across will help TREMENDOUSLY. It's the type of leather cap bullshit you'd skip over in other rpgs but in this game it makes all the difference.
Everything is deadly to you at the start. It gets easier.

Also, the DLC armor sets seem kind of broken. I'm level 32 on my Sorcerer and still using the Voldoan armor. Probably no point in even bothering with other gear since I plan on switching to MA once I finish out the Mage vocations.

What difficulty setting? If hard, getting one-shotted by everything is pretty normal until about lv.25. If normal, learn how to exploit enemy weaknesses, hire the right pawns for the right situation, and be cautious around enemies you've never seen before until you've memorized their attacks and tells. I recommend starting with a ranged class - strider is the best class for beginners, IMO.
I'd say it's pretty unnecessary. I'd loot all the enemy drops and mining spots you find. Don't bother picking up all the herbs, rocks, foreign knives, etc.
Lots of the loot is relatively unimportant in the grand scheme of things, so dutifully gathering everything you find isn't necessary. I mostly grab healing items and suchlike that are lying around, and pretty much ignore the rest. My pawns usually grab a representative sample of detritus anyhow, should I need it.
I also grab all the items that big nasty enemies drop, but it's more of a trophy-taking thing than for any practical necessity. Most everything just gets shoved into storage the next time I'm in Gran Soren and promptly forgotten about for the most part anyhow.
Edit: I like how in the space of two posts the replies consisted of "Ignore the herbs" followed immediately by "Ignore pretty much everything but the herbs."
Holy hell, why do people gripe about stuff like this? If this is the biggest problem a game has, any game, please let me know, because I will buy the shit out of it.

My justification is the game just throws so many herbs at you that most of them are redundant. I carry a few Greenwarish with me, but if I see stuff like Purple Anise or Loneflower or Nightcall etc. etc. I don't give it a second thought. Might be good for item combination, but I've never gotten too deep into that.

I have a real aversion to my Arisen ever having an encumberance of "average" or above, so I'm perhaps more choosy about loot than I should be. I don't even bother picking up loot to sell anymore unless its a ring or something light.

My apologies to those who may have sent me friend requests from the googledoc. Last night I logged in and was trying to accept requests, but I got 'this request has been cancelled' for every single one. I did an update before that so maybe something went awry there. Will try sending some requests tonight.
On another note, have people playing the PSN version and importing a save from vanilla DD been seeing a total lack of pawn utilization? It's not like Gwendal the ponytail man is amazing or anything, but it's been three nights now of no activity - meanwhile, with DD last week I was getting RC every single inn stay. Seems weird. Or depressing, if DA has such a miniscule player base.

too bad my old pawn was hit with invalid data RC. i probably missed a million.
I think stamina drains faster and walk speed is slower the heavier you are. I could be wrong.

It feels like I can run forever when I'm rated very light. Also less stamina drain when monsters try to shake me off - but I have leg strength and sinew augments as well as some stamina related ones so that's also a factor.

Yeah, that's why I was wondering if something is broken with the pawn rental stuff or what - doesn't make a ton of sense for there to be so much activity in DD and then none in DA.
I'll hire your pawn - never tried searching out a specific one but may as well give it a try!
