Grand Theft Auto IV has the best driving physics of any open-world game, ever

Nah Sleepy Dawgz driving all the way.

The city in the Sleeping Dogs images I see looks so good. I just ordered Sleeping Dogs - free roaming Hong Kong should be amazing.

GTA 4 driving didnt feel that bad to me and I loved the way cars took damage, was so fun just looking at a car after a mission and seeing all the war scars

If by best you mean worst, yes. Earlier GTAs, Saints Row and Sleeping Dogs all completely shit on GTA4 driving. Actually the driving is one of the reasons I can't stand that game at all.

The main issue with IV's driving is that the weight ceases mattering once you crash, because the crashes are all fairly anti-climactic - you can spin wildly into traffic and everything just sort of bounces like bumper cars, or smash someone head-on and just stop, rather than having the cars flip/spin/crumple appropriately. The actual driving weight feels awesome, it's just the crashes that feel sluggish.

This can be said of every open-world driving game ever, though, and at the time GTAIV's crash/crumple physics were the best around.

What is this supposed to prove other than "the lighting is nice"? That car is stuck to the road. Sleeping Dogs is awesome but there's nothing particularly special about the driving.

YES!!!!!

Fuck no. In Sleeping Dogs there's two types of cars, fast and agile, then fast and slightly less agile. Driving in Sleeping Dogs is ridiculously simple, making it boring. You want awful car physics? Just Cause 2 is bad enough in that regard to make the grappling hook and parachute the only viable way to have fun traversing.

All of this. I don't mind the driving in Sleeping Dogs and Saints Row 3, but the driving in Just Cause 2 is so bad.

I still don't understand how anyone enjoys all the driving in any open world game. It's commuting, almost as boring as it is in real life. I used the cabs every time I could in GTA IV.

Then you missed the point of why people enjoy open world games. For me the journey is as important as the final destination.

It's how you learn the city.

IV had a solid driving feel but the awful camera really hurt it for me.

Sleeping Dogs was much more gamey but also more FUN. And the camera never made taking a normal turn fraught with risk for no reason at all, unlike IV.

The real problem isn't the driving physics, it's the terrible camera. If only it could follow the car from behind...

I crash into more shit in 10 minutes playing GTA San Andreas than I do playing GTA IV for an hour. The driving in older GTA's are severely lacking now, saying otherwise is rose tinted syndrome.

Sleeping Dogs driving FAR surpasses that of GTA IV. GTA IV is leaps and bounds better than the previous GTAs, maybe, but Sleeping Dogs is where it's at.

You think the driving physics far surpass GTAIV? how? or do you think its just more fun to because its unrealistic and easier?

I agree OP, had so much fun on GTAIV just driving a motorcycle around town at top speeds, praying I wouldn't wreck because I knew I would die instantly lol. Made everything so intense.

I love GTA IV's driving and I hope they don't change it to feel crappy/unrealistic like Saints Row and Sleeping Dogs and such. I love how boaty and real the cars feel.

I would really really love to see those who hate the physics drive in game, it's once thing hating them because you prefer arcade physics, another thing if you hate them because you don't understand how to drive in the game and hate the game because it's too hard.

Best physics, period.

There's a reason why people learn how to drive. You do the same in GTA IV. You get used to how a car handles.

Better than the boxes on wheels that others open-world games have you drive.

I agree 100%. The hate for GTA 4 makes zero sense. It did so many things well. Even the shooting mechanic was heavily underestimated and that was handled amazingly, too.

I agree.

I could spent hours just cruising around in GTA IV, unlike most other open world games such as Sleeping Dogs or Saints Row.

There actually seem to be quite a lot of people agreeing with me, so I don't even know what the hell you're talking about.

Is not perfect and I hope they improve the weight but YESSSSSSSSS.

The driving model of Sleeping Dog and Saint's Row is fun but rigid, arcadey and not realistic at all to look.

GTA4's driving is cool because it makes escaping the police exciting. Other games it seems too easy to weave through traffic and hold the gas as soon as you hit a long straight stretch. In 4 you're crashing into shit, bumping over curbs, skidding everywhere and it's fun. RDR had a similar problem to other games where if you get chased by authorities all you gotta do is tap A a bunch. It's fucking lame.

GTA4 is the only open world game where it's fun to evade the police, and I don't even like the game that much.

yeah, it's pretty shitty

feels like you're trying to steer your car with a bag of dog poo

Yea true it does feel like that... WHEN you try to turn the car while going full speed, try turning as a fast speed WHILE keeping the accelerate trigger down or jsut don't use the breaks, yea it feels crappy.

Never has the meme " you're not doing it right" been more relevant, the physics are bad IF YOU don't know how to handle them.

Yes, the only reason people dislike them is because they didn't want that level of realism in their GTAs

Lol no. The handling is awful and the physics makes the car feel like it's made of platsic. Go over a jump and the car will just float through the air. The damage model however is great, you can really fuck up the car.

Mafia 2 has the best handling and car physics of any open world game I've played, the cars have weight to them and the feel really satisfying top drive. The damage model isn't as good as GTA IV though.

Very good point. The few times I've been "chased" by police in Sleeping Dogs has been lolworthy.

One of the few positive aspects about GTAIV is the driving. Took some adjustments to get use to it but everything feels right driving a car in the game.

I agree but the less forgiving driving makes some of the crazier maneuvers less feasible. I personally like the more realistic approach but completely get why a lot of others were looking for a more arcadey style physics for this type of game.

actually, the driving in GTAIV is what almost completely killed the game for me. They could have at least made the E-brake usable.
