Rumor: Digitimes: Sony PS4 may not achieve expected 12-16M shipments in 2013

Not if they plan to lunch worldwide.

EU (+australia) - 5mln
US - 6mln
JAP - 3mln

That is alone 14mln. They need to stuff channels because x-mas is coming and they will release console probably October. So they need to serve initial spike + x-mas sales.

6 mill in the US? You realise the PS3 has never in a single year even hit 5 mill there right?

Same with Japan, it's barely got half of that in its best year.

I don't know why these silly numbers are even being discussed, it should be pretty obvious to everyone they're completely unachievable 0_o

It reads "Hardware Sales" not shipment. Polyphony for example shipped almost 7mln GT5 units at release date but sold way less than that only after half a year or more they upgraded they shipment to 8mln and then later to 9mln.

It also reads that Sony shipped only 700k consoles on Europe launch. That is ridiculous if we assume those are shipped numbers. It would be like 2-3 consoles for every euron shop out there and would mean that there was shortage of consoles in EU market where there wasn't any. In fact many shops where overstocked because PS3 at start was hot.

Sales usually means sold to retailers here. I don't think companies ever report sold to consumers numbers.

12 - 16 would be a ridiculous in my mind. Those are targets doomed to fail.

I would be VERY happy if they'd manage 6-8.

because?

The PS3 and 360 are outselling the WiiU quite easily. There is still a market for consoles.

Whilst I don't see it as bad as WiiU, consoles never hit the ground running (unless it's a mass product like the Wii). It's just unrealistic to expect so.

It'll take PS4 and 720 like 3 years before they're selling 12m+ in a year.

Who decided not to read the thread and realize this number was not made by Sony but made up?

who decided not to read the entire news and the shipment instruction and upstream supply chain story (the real important info here, if it's true), and to only focus on numbers for the sake of countering me ? :)

The thread title really needs to be changed to Tales from my ass. its a made up number folks stop thinking its what sony expects.

Why unrealistic? It would be nice if people would back up some claims.

Again shipped =/= sold. If you got to your everyday electronic store they will have stock of consoles when your everyday shop will go low on consoles stock it will mean they will order more from warehouse.

Next are hardware failures. It is usual that most of hardware have 4-8% chance that it will not turn on. For PS3 it was like 8-10%. If PS4 will have same rate they need to ship over 80-100k more units for every million.

People who believe that 3-5 mln units can stock whole world market are wrong here. Sure 12-16 mln look big and frankly it is but we don't know what Sony plans. Maybe they will do crazy big marketing campain ?

If Europe gets mad at Sony for this that's their own damn fault. Sony can only make so many consoles. If it sells out and people legitimately hate Sony for that then they're idiots.

I think they should short-change other territories rather than Europe, it's their #1 market.

Sony and companies in general needs to adjust their shipments according to their sales expectations. They can't just manufacture 20m console and then go and sell only 5m, these things costs money, they need to sell their shipments to recover the manufacturing cost. The only way Sony would ship/manufacture 20-16m console if they were expecting the PS4 to sell crazy numbers like 10-13m in Q3/Q4.

Warehouses don't have unlimited space. There's going to be two new next gen consoles, and Wii U may get a boost if the new 3D Mario rumored is coming out. Expected price drops from PS3 and 360 will need room too.

Does anyone actually expect Sony to ship 12-16 million units in 2013?

It's gonna be a supply-constrained launch. 720 likewise.

Name one home console that has reached 12 million units in 1 year, let alone the fiscal year ending in spring of 2014. Who the hell thought this? Are they including 2013 thru holidays 2014? I can guarantee they won't ship more than 6 million before end of fiscal 2013. Not at $500. Or $400. Or $300. Unless they are including Vita, PS3 in the PS4 numbers.

It shouldn't take that long for a good product. Maybe year 2. It's been only recent that the leader has sold so little. MS is given a lot of credit but even when it started outselling the Wii, it wasn't doing great. It was only the context of outselling the Wii and I would argue it's sales are overrated.

I don't care about your shipped/sold comparison, I know the difference and there is never that big a gap between the two. Retailers order what they want, Sony don't tell them what they're buying.

Your argument is piss poor.

Oh wow, bad PS4 news! It's about god damn time.

I'm pretty sure shipment constraints are par for the course in most launches. It would be awesome if they could hit their target though.

Considering only one major console has ever performed as badly as the Wii U has, I doubt the PS4 will come close to bombing that hard out of the gate. Sony's already doing so much more right than Nintendo ever did (talking specs, showing games, engendering quality third party support, development-friendly, building momentum up to release etc etc). It's pure wishful thinking to say the PS4 is going to bomb ala Wii U.

Would not really say it is bad news. Completely expected news tbh. Expecting to turn out that many PS4's in such a short time is pretty crazy. Being slightly supply contrained is honestly not a bad thing. Even if they ship half the 12million, they should still be in good shape. I think they want the 12-18million in stores because the Nextbox is going to be delayed to 2014 and they want to take as much of a lead as possible.

I wonder if they will have "game deals" with a console purchase to further take the lead at launch. "Buy PS4+2PS4 games, get 1 PS4 game free!"

This sounds like bullshit to me. Even if Sony did delay by about 3 months, their console would still do quite well, they've managed to get some decent mindshare behind it.

That being said I still expect Xbox to be the clear winner for end of next year, MS has been VERY quiet recently.. but yeah no fucking way Sony will bomb.

There's always the dreaded $599, though that seems unlikely. But a lot of people seem to think $499 is very likely, which I think is still a mistake if they go that high.

It could very well do as bad as wiiU. However using the WiiU as proof that the nextgen twins will do bad is complete bullshit. The WiiU has completely different problems that the other consoles don"t.

While I don't see it performing as badly as the Wii U if their expectations are anywhere near as high I can definitely seeing them being missed and heavily revised like the WiiU's...

Sure it is piss poor.

But question is what number of consoles is needed to stock:

US
Japan
Asia (Russia/China/India/lot of other countries in Asia)
EU
MiddleEast
South America
Australia
Even freaking Afrika will have some shops that will sell PS4s.

3 mln ? Devide it by 20 (which is common number of stocked consoles) and you have 150k shops.
If they plan to do worldwide launch then this will mean they need to stock a lot of electronic shops and 3mln won't cut it.

Simple math: with optimistic numbers taken from ass
Ships worldwide in september:
September US: 1.000.000 EUR: 1.000.000 Jap: 500.000 total: 2.500.000
October 500.000 500.000 250.000 1.250.000
November 1.000.000 1.000.000 Jap: 300.000 2.300.000
December 1.800.000 2.000.000 jap. 800.000 4.600.000
January 500.000 500.000 300.000 1.300.000
February 400.000 500.000 300.000 1.200.000
March 500.000 500.000 300.000 1.300.000
Total: 14+ millions

So not completely impossible, but some stars and planers better be very close in line..

ps3+x360 both @ 200$ + 1000 games available could not achieve 14mil in 6 months and do you really think a new console with a price point higher than 300$ and a minimal lineup could do such figures ?

how ? a 4K 70" hdtv in bundle for free ?

The question is when did their PR campaign ever say that they will have 16 Million PS4's in 2013?

Digitimes made a story that said Sony would have 20 million PS4's in 2012 then they made a new story that said they will have 16 million PS4's in 2013 now they have a new story that says Sony will not be able to achieve the expected 12- 16 million PS4's in 2013.

I don't remember Sony telling people to expect 12- 16 million PS4's in 2013.

No it was more specific than that on the Kotaku topic, concretely that they are late in hardware development and dev kit & sdk "refinement", leaving a rushed and not ready for November impression to my third-party sources.

Like i said in a previous message, the shipment number isn't important here, but that, if this news is true, a Taiwanese high-tech website established since the late 90s have sources from the supply chain saying that they haven't received any instructions from Sony yet.
