This doesn't sound remotely realistic. 8M would be high goal for FY 2014, let alone the end of the year. 12-16 M isn't really in the realm of possibility for a $400+ console.

No shit. Brand new consoles tend to be expensive and besides we are in May. I would be surprised if they move even close to 10 mil this year.

So they're planning to outsell the Wii U's worldwide half year sales in Japan alone? They need maybe 6 million consoles the first 2-3 months. They need to sell out. Overdelivering isn't good for business if you want the image of a good launch.

The highest the PS3 shipped in Q3 (Oct-Dec) was 6.5m, 14m shipments for 2 Qs is way too high number, especially considering that Q4 is a very slow Q for Sony. The only way that 12-16m number would ever work if they were counting both PS3 and PS4 projected sales for FY13.

Well that and it could also hint at a subs model, like $299 with a 2 year sub.
That would probably shift at a faster rate than a $400 + machine.

These have to be joke posts right? Have any of you even heard of the website? Or realize how many consoles 12-16 million is in just a 2 month period? Microsoft or Sony would be ecstatic to sell half of those. So drop the console warrior stuff.

Would be cool if Sony did the right thing and delayed it in Japan instead of Europe.
The highest shipped number was only for 2 regions one small and one big JPandUS. Now count additional 4mln for europe and it's 10mln.
If they really want to have worldwide lunch they need at least 10mln minimum. Even if they overship it is not like those consoles won't sell.
Also Europe/Us and Japan are not only Sony places where they ship consoles. China recently allowed consoles use there are other places like middle east india australia brazil argentine dubai etc.
Frankly with 12mln it will be hard to stock all shops on planet.

Do you think with 3 mln they can stock all shops on planet in case of worldwide launch ? 6,5 was alone for JP and US in case of PS3 launch.

Given the fact that the article calls out tablets as the reason for the console sales numbers dropping and not the fact that this generation is now 7 years old says all you need to know about how trustworthy a source they are.
I'm surprised the some folks here are incapable to comprehension. It's not the number of units Sony expects to sell rather produce to ship to retailers.

It reads "Hardware Sales" not shipment. Polyphony for example shipped almost 7mln GT5 units at release date but sold way less than that only after half a year or more they upgraded they shipment to 8mln and then later to 9mln.
It also reads that Sony shipped only 700k consoles on Europe launch. That is ridiculous if we assume those are shipped numbers. It would be like 2-3 consoles for every euron shop out there and would mean that there was shortage of consoles in EU market where there wasn't any. In fact many shops where overstocked because PS3 at start was hot.

It would take another Wii phenomena to sell 12-16M in its first year, and not even factoring the $400~ price. Maybe the core gamer will cause sales to explode...we've been waiting too long.
Shipments =/= sales.
Vita shipped a lot of units but sold only half of that if not less.
If you consider shop stock + warehouses chain then you need a lot of units to cover it.
Actual sales could be way lower for first months but it still mean shops need to be stocked full.
Sony uses the standard Japanese fiscal year, so Euro launch stocks are included in that fiscal '06 figure. You're really overestimating just how many consoles sell at launch; even for a console as shit-hot and priced to move as the PS2, it took only about ten million to provide five months of units for the US and PAL plus a year+ in Japan and Asia.

Shipped. So including not just stock making its way through the retail chain, but (iirc Sony's accounting methods of the day) stock on a boat somewhere between China and LA or Rotterdam.
