Drag-on Dragoon 3 producer acknowledges that the lack of core sequels is a problem

I just don't get it. Square must know there's still a strong portion of their fanbase that wants their old school approaches to mechanics and storytelling.

Why don't they give a small, loyal old school minded team a set, relatively modest budget and meet this more dedicated audience halfway. Be strict with the budget so the break even is more than achievable. Look at Dark Souls - make a good product for the starved, non flashy modern minded RPG fan and word of mouth will come. Have faith S-E - neither mammothly budgeted FFXIII emo romps or dirt cheap unimaginative IOS titles are the answer. The fact that ports of your glory day titles are so well received on the mobile market and you can get away with charging comparatively high prices must tell you something, but that will only take you so far.

Isn't that what they did with 4 Heroes of Light and Bravely Default?
 
Well, the thread title and OP was kind of obvious. None of these games are their three pillars of FF, DQ, or KH. To be fair, they had released duds for those series recently, which warranted poor player reception. It's just unfortunate that they won't give those series another shot at this point in time.

It's too bad. I was looking at a few VP videos yesterday, and I got this desire for a new VP game.

Well when we get things like FF Tactics S in the future and FF: ATB...do we want them to give it another shot?

But with DDD (KH3 set-up game) out and the Remixes being made...KH3 is closer than ever. That still means it's a few years out most likely, but...
 
The weird thing is that Valkyrie Profile 2 did pretty decent (at least in Japan). According to the SE report at the time, it did 420k for Japan; 140k for US, not including EU numbers.

Of course, the landscape has changed these days, but adjusting the budget goes a long way.

It's also pretty weird that none of the SE-published tri-ace games are on PSN. One would think they would put up the Star Ocean PSP remakes and Valkyrie Profile 1, but there simply isn't the option. Instead, the games are relegated to the fate of UMD.

Well, Infinite Undiscovery had its fair share of flaws (not the most original story, some creepy twin kids, some frustrating moments), but it also had some really good ideas (the Vesplume tower dungeon where you could see another group from your party progressing through the dungeon, was a very cool idea). Technically, it was between correct and good, some areas would have needed to be a bit more polished.
If I remember correctly, the reception was quite mixed at its release. And since then it's mostly remembered just for its famous 'dinner dance'.
Far from being the best RPG, but still, I spent some good time on this one!

Infact, all of these series were ruined. From the Valkyrie Profile on DS to Star Ocean 4 to the PS2 Romancing Saga remake. All sucked.

You might get BDFF 2. Maybe Japan only. And that will be that. I wouldn't mind a rehaul of FFVII: Before Crisis for 3DS either like Tabata would like to do.

Oh and Gyrozetter. Most likely Japan only.

In fact the way they worded their new outlook on having focus on region specific games may imply this.

DS remake of Lufia/Estpolis probably sealed that IP's fate as well.
 
Ugh, no. No 3DS games. DS/3DS is where good RPG series go to die. I want PS4/Durango game development only. PS Vita if only as a tie in for a console game.

EDIT - I don't even really want Vita development if it's going to take away from console development. Console games only. Handheld RPG gaming experiences are the worst, or at least that's been the track record so far (in general, there's still some amazing RPGs on handheld)

Yep, I literally can't think of a good RPG series that has released anything good since being on the DS.

The DS ruined Suikoden, Lufia, and Valkyrie Profile, to name a few. Soon to be Shin Megami Tensei.

I disagree that DS kills RPG franchises and not the company making the franchises in question. To say otherwise is silly.


That would be like me saying Dark Souls sucks because it was on Xbox 360. Which of course it doesn't.

Coming back to reality. Square Japan has put out abysmal Console output and great handheld output.

Only console stuff that keeps them relevant is Enix and Eidos. The DS and 3DS aren't devices that turn RPG's of old to toxic waste. You only have Square to blame.

But the system and market had everything to do with development direction.

The DS became the de-facto device for RPG development due to userbase. The system required developers to take a new approach (less focus on presentation for example) to how they made these games.

I mean the trend is there. If they were forced into sticking with console development only, we would have a very different jRPG market today.

And that's the most fucked up thing about it: Square-Enix doesn't do anything with these IPs, despite them laying around ready for digital releases.
 
Nice thing about Star Ocean 2 is it's not that expensive and you can play it on your PS3. Valkyrie Profile requires a PSP to replay if you don't have a PS1 copy (which is expensive now) and Romancing SaGa? I never understood the relationship between FF Legend and Romancing SaGa and what we got from Japan.
