The Last of Us Demo (GoW:A Exclusive) Discussion Thread

There's not much happening with the infected AI. I really wish there were human enemies here.
ND should just give us that E3 level for download as well. A ten minute demo is not nearly satisfying enough. We need to get our hands on the experience of human AI.

I completely forgot that even existed. Made it much better. Genuinely being scared to go round a corner incase there was an infected.
Yea, me too. I didn't even look at the controls. Just tried learning it from prompts/instinct. There is no prompt that shows you how to use listening mode, which is great I think.
The game really should be played without the use of listening mode. I went and took a look around every corner, and was genuinely frightened to hear clicker/runner sounds. It also took me a full minute before I could muster up the courage to go down a level and meet whatever runner/clickers were waiting for me. lol.

The amount of running out of desperation I had to do was insane. I never felt my heart racing so fast playing a game.

was fun, i picked up a led pipe and omg was it satisfying to fight off some infected with, as well as the shiv

i didnt like how headshots werent 1 shots though....but w/e

What's with the obsession with headphones in this thread? Any half decent home theatre setup will be a superior experience even if it's only stereo.

OMG what a masterpiece! holy shit!

everything about the game is just incredible. the atmosphere, the sound design ( wow) the graphics, controls..fucking everything felt sublime!

ND are hands down the best developers out there. So god damn talented.

I was that blown away by the demo.

Oh man, if this demo is not an accurate representation of how good the game is ... holy fuck.

I loved this demo, the atmosphere, the gameplay, the character interactions, the difficulty level - all amazing.

side note :

Am I crazy, or does Joel in that demo screen look exactly like the dad from American Horror Story?

I played the demo back-to-back a few times this evening (EDIT: I lied, I played it for hours) and I'm pleased to say that I enjoyed it a lot.

If you play Uncharted for the eye candy, you'll be playing the Last of Us for the sound. It's very atmospheric and moody, and incredibly tense towards the end. "Oh fuck, I'm going to die!"

Oh god, get in my PS3 nao.

This is really...like, very different than Uncharted. The feel is not similar.

Gameplay:
I really have no idea how to tackle the 4 other runners + 1 clicker that doesn't involve direct confrontation. The 1st runner I can easily take down using stealth. But the others have extremely sharp ears that the minute they hear/spot me, it's all over, they'll screech and call the others, forcing you into battle, whether you want to or not. I'd try again later and see if I can take them down using other ways.
I'm pretty sure this is scripted in a way. You definitely can't advance in that section unless you kill everything. That's why they probably force the combat on you.

It's really not. Someone brutal might say it is almost shit compared to the other two sections we already saw. It's really good.

Simply amazing! I haven't played the demo so my comments about the graphics on the previous page were stupid.

But man, I can't believe what these guys are doing with less than 512 MB ram. Can you imagine what their PS4 game will look like?

Naughty gods are going to blow people away on PS4.

Really? That's shitty.
Yeah they kill you instantly if you try to advance without killing them. You need to move a crate, which alerts them and you are pretty much done. I tried a couple of times and didn't manage to take them all down with stealth. The runners are very aggressive in that section.

Not sure if this is out there yet, but the official review embargo lifts next Wednesday June 5th. That's more than a week before the game releases. Sony must be really happy with it :)

For those wondering where I got this from, my buddy who does radio stuff got his review copy and info today.
And no, smart asses, it's not my uncle =P

Do you guys want more Last of Us?

I mean, we can here different sides of the story, different places in the world, etc. Sounds like it could be a pretty damn good franchise It's such a great genre too, and one that seems what a lot of gamers are hungry for.

Sony does this pretty often fortunately. It's really nice.

ND, SSM and Quantic Dream are all gonna blow us away. Can't wait to see what next-gen faces look like :D

This sounds like its going to be good.

But of course I already knew the SP was going to be great.

Still wondering on MP. And no I will not shut up about it.
Has anyone found out anything new on MP?

It's 4 v 4 with multiple modes. Why not go research the data-mined info for it? It's out there.

Ok. On the menu with the Sony Wireless Stereo Headset.. and Virtual Surround Sound; get, get ..GETTY-UP!

I was trying to take one of them inside that abandoned room but time and time again he always spotted me. My plan was to take him out, take the other runner, then sneak behind the clicker to shiv him 2x.

I purposely avoided this thread until I'd played the demo and came to post about the incredible sound. Apparently I'm not the only one. I'm playing on a THX Ultra 2 setup, and I don't think I've watched many movies with sound this amazing. Kudos ND.

I'm all about zombies, post apocalyptic survival stories, and definitely naughty dog story telling/technology. MOAR LAST OF US, MOAR NAUGhTY DOG.

Again I have to say how absolutely bizarre it is to have "listen mode" in a game with great sound design.

I managed to take out two runners with stealth, no listen mode. Be patient, move slowly.

I liked this a lot. I played it twice and am not desperate for the full game.

I have three gripes:

  1. Joel is a little weird about auto-cover near corners. Sometimes he behaves, sometimes not. You cannot really tell what is a good cover corner and what isn't until you try it. After a while you get a feel for it (can't really get too close to the edge or he'll break from cover, exposing you) I feel like they should make him just slightly more sticky near corner cover.
  2. Shoulder switching always reverts back to default shoulder. That's annoying and should be a toggle. They did it for Uncharted and I was hoping they'd do it here too. If you're in cover, or don't move much, he'll stay to the shoulder you last chose, which is better than nothing I guess, but yeah.
  3. This is no really a valid complaint because I swear the newer builds have this as a toggle, but I don't like the item bubbles that pop up near pickups. Game already goes out of its way to show you every item/drawer/pickup... I'd like to turn off the damn bubbles. But I think you can so this is probably moot.

Otherwise this shit is awesome. MP is going to be pretty sweet I think.

The flatness of the foliage and lack of physics when you run through tall grass or those tall ass sunflowers is a gripe albeit minor. Everything else is top notch though and I haven't fought shit yet.

Wow...very short demo, but it served the exact purpose a demo should. It made me want to sit and play the entire rest of the game immediately.

The combat felt very satisfying to me.

I stealth strangled one runner and then snuck up into cover, grabbed a nearby brick and quickly threw it across the room as a distraction. This allowed me to grab another runner and strangle him. I quickly moved forward to try and strangle a third runner, but was spotted. Joel threw him to the ground and quickly stomped his head in. At this point though, the blind clicker grabbed me and I immediately shived him to get him off of me. I fired a few rounds to take down the blind clicker, and then finished off the final runner by bashing his head in with a lead pipe.

If this is the infected combat....wow. Can't wait to see the human AI at work.

Pretty sure you can turn it off in the menu.

I believe you can take off item prompts in the full game.

Good lord that was intense. Those are some of the most viscous infected enemies i've fought. Even more so than Left 4 Dead...and those one hit death bites are nasty as hell.

EDIT: Wasnt aware of listen mode, but I like that you have to take your time and use health kits. They work like actual bandages for the most part. Gun, melee attacks, thunder, everything sounds as loud or as quiet as it should. I'm just playing in 2.1 and set the options to stereo speakers, but man am I impressed. Especially after several recent action / horror games having weak gun noises.

The only thing that struck me as odd was going out of our way to stealth around a clicker...but then moving a large metal drawer across a floor right next to it :P
