So, I'm listening to Timo's new album, which I think isn't too bad.
Reviews thus far have been middling or so it seems...
What does GAF think?

Then you have shit like Cannibal Corpse where the vocals are generic and awful sounding IMO. Lyrics are beyond horrible, but so is the band so I guess it fits them well.
Hey hey hey man Chris Barnes might be a blech vocalist but the Barnes era material has some real gems musically. Corpsegrinder era has some gems too.
Band's problem is that they put out way too much material. Do they even have anything left on the cutting room floor? They could probably compress their discography to about 1/2-1/3 of the size it is now if they'd cut out some of the fat.
As far as I'm concerned, Cannibal Corpse has one album that I can say is 100% good and has aged well without reservation and that's The Bleeding. Everything else is either ruined by garbage production or has way too much filler to make for a good sequential listen. Unfortunate stuff, because I grew up with that band and the nostalgia factor is super high with them.

So, here's a question for ye. Lyrics you can't quite make out. Good or bad? I dunno how often I've listened to growling vocals or what have you and been totally clueless as to what the lyrics were but more often than not it's just the tone of the voice that would put me off rather than the lyrics themselves. A while later I end up coming across the actual lyrics and it's a penny dropping kind of moment.
How do the rest of ye cope with it?
never listen to a cannibal corpse album before, now glad to this thread i'm hearing The Bleeding. this better be good
edit: just did. meh.

Black Metal Band From Umeå,Sweden
Albume contemplanda Morte; De Reverencie laboribus Ac Adorationis(Full Length 2007)
Lyrical Themes:The Death of All, Spiritual Death-Worship
Mortuus is a black metal band with a slower paced style using heavy guitars echoing from beyond the grave, deep vocals praising death and occult lyrics that gives a dark and gloomy sensation of rot and decay.
The band was formed in Umeå, Sweden in 2003 by the current band members J. Kvarnbrink (aka Tehôm)(bass/guitars/vocals) and M. Hinze (drums).
Tehôm handles the vocals and guitars along with Mika and has previously played bass with Dödfödd(Stillborn) and Shade of Black as a guitarist and as a vocalist in Shade of Black. M. Hinze is active in Ondskapt as a drummer and used to play in Shade of Black as a drummer, bassist and as a backup vocalist

~LYRICS~
Rhepera is in her hiding, and the church bells are silent now
the inner starvation has bred an emotionless madness,
breeding desires so dark... in these abodes of awful forms
I am becoming - incarnated,
the breath of complete pervertion!
soil is spread upon the ground, her sleep disturbed
and their sorrow shall turn into horror in the morning
but the moon rests in darkness now...
for how could it shine in the light of the black sun?
the lights are all exploding at their presence...
for there are many here, many here...
yet there is light: tombstones radiate a glare unearthly
a strange glow, growing stronger at each movement
the metamorphosis of an angel turning into a beast
is progressing in this unholy marriage of life and death
I wear this lower crown, at the throne of shells
for death is my bride...
in these abodes of awful forms

I was gonna say Eaten Back To Life is the most bearable since it's still got traces of old school death metal and kind of thrashy in a way.
Just gonna go ahead and say that Sunbather is easily the best album I have heard so far this year.
It's kinda weird how insanely big the band is. I mean, it's not like they're particularly accessible or anything.
Does anyone remember why CC became so notorious?
listened to it once, it didn't grab me like the new Altar of Plagues album
Really? I actually feel the same way about that Altar of Plagues album. Didn't grab me at all.
There were stories about them chainsawing cows on stage etc. in 90s
well I'm going to give another spin or two to Sunbather for sure, I find this kind of unorthodox black metal very interesting.
holy shit you guys I'm seeing Bolt Thrower tomorrow and it doesn't feel like real life
The first half of When Cannons Fade is undoubtedly my favorite segment of music in all of death metal. I'm predicting severe neck injuries during this song tomorrow night
It is pretty damn solid. "Dream House" and the title track are both unbelievable. Such a step up over their old stuff.Just gonna go ahead and say that Sunbather is easily the best album I have heard so far this year.
It's okay, because I in fact love you, for your website is one of the best things to happen to the metal community. Still, sorry you had to miss them at MDFI hate you ;_;

Let's hope they don't ever get a divorce, or else the sacrifice will all be for naught :/I had to miss Bolt Thrower to go to a cousin's wedding...and Rotten Sound...and Baroness.
bad-ass instrumental, terrible vocalsholy shit you guys I'm seeing Bolt Thrower tomorrow and it doesn't feel like real life

At least this song has a solo to it. But really it sounds like an Ozzy song with Iommi on guitar instead of Zack Wylde or whoever is playing guitar for him now.
But Barnes's vocals sound really bad on The Bleeding. He's already got that Six Feet Under old man bark thing going on.
Also I'd maybe nominate Bloodthirst for being really solid from beginning to end.
EDIT: every time I mention Chris Barnes I end up listening to some of the Graveyard Classics covers on youtube. Listening to Chris Barnes butcher AC/DC songs never stops being funny.
Say what you will about Chris Barnes' vocals. He's directly responsible (for better or worse) for an entire generation of grunting and screaming on metal albums, myself included. He's really the guy that popularized that style.
I just found an old gig video from 1998 of my old band Enochian Crescent on YouTube, when Hahto (Rotten Sound, Swallow the Sun, Wintersun) was playing drums in the band, and when I still had hair on my head. =) Pretty amusing watching it after 15 years.

Disagree.
Tell that to Kam Lee (Death/Mantas), Jeff Becerra (Possessed), Scott Carlson (Repulsion), Paul Speckman (Master)
Wow, didn't know you were friends with Kai, I love Wintersun like a LOT. And cool stuff there, are you the vocalist?
I still see him from time to time, but quite rarily, as he lives about 500km away.

All of these have a distinctly different style compared to Chris Barnes. Chis Barnes is THE guy that a whole generation of bands with names that begin with D started.
Look I love BT
Karl Willets >>>>>>>>>>>> You
What about Frank Mullen?
Look I love BT
See my post above it's just a phase I think.
But even if I mantain my opinion for a long time I will always enjoy the instrumental
