The Last of Us - Review Thread [Emargo up, scores in OP.]

After doing my 2012 taxes I realized that I spend way too much money on video games at launch.

My New Year's Resolution for 2013 is to not pay $60 for a video game and that has been very easy and nice due to Steam and GreenManGaming.

TLoU is the first console game I've been interested in, though, so I'm trying to figure out how I should work around that one since I would like to own the physical media.

Probably Redbox it the day it comes out if I can find it and then get a physical copy at the end of the year for $20 or whatever.

I spent over ten of thousand dollars on new games last year, which is what you get for getting every game that comes out the day it comes out for full retail price.

Eventually I figured "Why the fuck am I spending $60 on a bunch of things I will only play for 5 hours or so?".

Trade some games in to get it cheaper.

Also holy shit tens of thousands?

I buy like 12 games a year. Not counting random iOS purchases.

If I don't want to pay $60 for a console game, what is my best option for playing this on day 1? B&M rental?

Buy it, beat it, resell it for almost full value?

Also, perfect time for Sony to announce a PS3 price drop right before this game releases. Seems alot of non-owners want to get it for just this game

.

I'm kind of disappointed about the ending.

Hearing it's a tearjerker, could only mean the obvious. I'm not even going to spoil tag it because I have no clue if this is true..this is just random thoughts...but either Joel dies, or the chick dies (ellie?)...that's the only way I see tears flowing...and either way, it'll feel to much similar, IMO, to that of Tell Tales Walking Dead ending.

If they can execute it better than than Whitta and Tell Tale did than by all means, but after experiencing TWD ending, I doubt the tears will be flowing all that much..if what happens, which I assume is this case, happens...

If these critics and reviewers are trying to fuck with me I won't be happy. I can't wait any longer. I need it now. Guys. GUYS. GUYS!

I'm a collector. I don't sell or trade my games.

Although I suppose the second posters suggestion would make sense, buy it for $60, beat it, sell it for $50 or whatever, then buy it again later for my collection when it's practically free.

Maybe just budget so that you buy less games in the future to account for it?

That's pretty much what I do. As I said I only get 12 or so a year, sometimes I'll splurge for the collectors edition when I'm super hyped for those games. (The Last Of Us)

Man I want to stay out of any threads related to The Last Of Us due to being worried about spoilers but I can't stay away. :(

Ya, 2012 was not a good year for my mental health. Went a bit manic depressive and just started buying games the day they came out that I didn't even plan to play.

I still have Halo 4 in the plastic wrap. $60 down the drain, etc.

This year I'm trying to be far more careful about that, and so far so good for sure. I've spent less than $1000 so far this year, but I've still played plenty of great games at launch. And without resorting to piracy, of course.

:(

At least play the campaign, it's worth checking out even if the multiplayer isn't a box of chocolates.

Until the new consoles come out! Already saving up :lol

I hear you man. I easily spent well over 1k for Infinite =/

No regrets however. And I dont blame you for not wanting to trade anything in. Redbox that shit.

Holy shit, Andrew. How much was that skyhook?

Keep away from all of The Last of Us goodies.

Excellent idea as well. Just be sure to sell it to someone here or on CL or the like.\\

Duke - It was the new TV I bought mostly. That plus the Skyhook. plus the art book, plus the special edition, plus the guide...

Only thing Im gettin for this is the Survival.

Actually, due to the wonders of PC DD sales, Steam, GreenManGaming, following Wario64 on Twitter, and NeoGAF, I have been able to play pretty much every game I want when I want to play it, and for a price that I consider fair and acceptable.

It just requires some work. Paying $60 for games is laziness. I was too lazy to look for better deals in 2012, and now in 2013 I'm working to be a more fiscally responsible gamer.

For a GTX 880 next year, ya!

I've decided that both next-gen consoles are waiting until 1 price drop and a good number of exclusive games that I feel like I can't miss out on any longer.

For me buying a game at $60 is me essentially the premium for wanting to play something immediately.

I know I can't wait a second longer than I need to for The Last Of Us, so I'll gladly pay the full amount.

For something like God of War Ascension I waited two months and got it for $30. Wise choice....

Yeah, I buy a shitton of games brand new but unless it's something I really want waiting just a couple of weeks can result in much better deals.

This one though, Survival Edition Day 1. Need that artbook/steelbook.

"Official Playstation Magazine" giving the last huge PS3 exclusive release a 10/10? My goodness, I am shocked beyond all comprehension.
It's UK OPM, they are like EG & Edge, they don't fuck around regardless if it's exclusive or not, actually I think the highest scoring games from them are multiplatform

dat generational fatigue

lol. "they don't fuck around" is about a general as you can get. nothing is black and white.

Shit, I really need to start following the mentality of purchasing that you guys have.
I wish someone would have smacked some sense into me years ago.

I have horror stories of some of the games I've purchased for $60 this generation. Off the top of my head:

Medal of Honor: Warfighter
Damnation
X-Blades
Onechanbara
Blacksite: Area 51
Shadowrun
Lair
Time Crisis 4 w/ Lightgun ($100? IIRC)
The Force Unleashed
Spectral Force 3
Culdcept Saga
The Last Remnant
Infinite Undiscovery
Star Ocean 4

and many others. And those are just the bad games that I spent full price on, not even to mention the average or good games that I just wasn't interested in playing.

Add to the OP, please.

Well I am getting the Survial edition cause the post pandemic edition was sold out. What other goodies are there?

I think that's it. There's a couple of special editions here in the UK, but we don't get a statue :(

However, we do get a cool canvas wrap!

Apparently the Survival Edition here comes with the actual full sized art book published by Dark Horse. That alone warrants the extra 20 bucks. It's being sold alone on Amazon for 25.

Ive really gotten into collecting art books for games this gen.

Yeah, if you want the art book at all, like me, it's a no brainer to get the Survival Edition.

Game looks good enough, I just cannot get behind another zombie game. I thought it was going to be a post-apocalyptic survival game, not another zombie game.

Erm...consult Metacritic before you buy?

I've seen several people mention this but I don't know how there was any confusion. The infected were featured prominently in the reveal trailer. I've been on a strict media blackout and I knew this.

Sounds like an odd principle to get behind, like not supporting a game that looks good but has guns in it, so it must be another "gun game". A lot of the marketing downplays the existence of the infected and makes it clear it's more about survival and the lead characters.

It ain't like post-apocalyptic survival and zombies are mutually exclusive either :P

1. Who is kevin dent?
Someone who thinks he is a larger part of the inside games industry crowd than he really is and tries to prove it by interjecting into every topic while leading on that he knows more than he really does.

So, a NeoGAF poster on Twitter?

This is why you don't preorder

Alright, I'm thinking that I should go down to Gamestop and pre-order The Last of Us in order to get the special edition. I just wonder if there is still time to do so.
