Amazingly, critics often have varying opinions on an individual title. I'd rather have a decent spread of reviews which analyse the game from differing perspectives - makes entertaining reading.

Then again we're talking about a score range of 7.5-10 so any outrage seems ridiculously shortsighted.

Couldn't have said it better myself! Really looking forward to next week, and from what I have played in the demo, this game could easily be a contender for my personal GOTY, which at this point is even hard to say given how freaking awesome 2013 has been so far.

Sure, but coming from Polygon it just seems shady. They currently have NO credibility and shouldnt even be mentioned anywhere.

Sure, people wouldnt complain if they gave a 10/10 score, but that doesnt change the fact that they simply arent a credible reviewing outlet, so I dont get why they should be treated as such.

I don't know why people get worked up over it. First on average they are rating all games lower than other sites, partly because they are using the whole scale, partly because they have come to a specific critical perspective (if you want to be less charitable you can read all sorts of things into that). Second people focus on the publication too much. If you look at previous Philip Kollar reviews he's trashing a lot of games that other people enjoyed. That's just how he feels. You can't just discount them because their scoring scheme or the fact that the site is staffed by people from Joystiq/Kotaku/etc. I personally don't like Kollar reviews and actually prefer the ones that (the apparently hated) Arthur Gies writes.

Sure. Not enough time with multiplayer and big restrictions on footage as well to cobble a full review. Also, 'cause you know we want to spoil it when you find out the whole game takes place in the matrix.

More seriously, it's an amazing game that's more so more not being an overly innovative one. Naughty Dog has often been good at refinement, but here the various systems are familiar but chord into an interesting way, with expert pacing, characters and scenarios that stay fresh throughout.

I get echoes of Half-Life 2 from the linear-but-wide level structure, and world building. It's not perfect and I don't really believe a 10 means perfection either. I also get echoes of when I played Half-Life 1 with it's slow, blurring lead in. I had read the hype back in 1998 and was wondering when the game was going to get good, and hours in, I realized it had been amazing the whole time. In the same way, TLOU doesn't really start until 2 hours in, but that's not because of cutscenes and tutorials, it's just good storytelling, game design, and hard-won marriage between the two.

I remember reading they don't assign scores if the review goes up before the games release date.

It's a rule they have I believe.

Some other game didn't have a score for a while, I think it was Halo 4.

This thread is no where near as bad as people like you are making it out to be. We have a few people with knee-jerk reactions; we have others who can't understand the disparity when their favorite reviewers (IGN, Giant Bomb, Sessler, etc.) have given this game the utmost praise. The fact that Polygon was funded by Microsoft is another ordeal altogether, but the skepticism is warranted. When the game launches, we'll have a better idea, but let's not act like some fucking travesty has went down.
